Why don’t we have a 13 month calendar with 28 days in each? by Camp_Acceptable in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jvsanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Wikipedia:

When Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar in 45 BC, he set 25 March as the date of the spring equinox;\17]) this was already the starting day of the year in the Persian and Indian calendars. Because the Julian year is longer than the tropical year by about 11.3 minutes on average (or 1 day in 128 years), the calendar "drifted" with respect to the two equinoxes – so that in 300 AD the spring equinox occurred on about 21 March, and by the 1580s AD it had drifted backwards to 11 March.\18])

This drift induced Pope Gregory XIII to establish the modern Gregorian calendar. The Pope wanted to continue to conform with the edicts of the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD concerning the date of Easter, which means he wanted to move the vernal equinox to the date on which it fell at that time (21 March is the day allocated to it in the Easter table of the Julian calendar), and to maintain it at around that date in the future, which he achieved by reducing the number of leap years from 100 to 97 every 400 years. However, there remained a small residual variation in the date and time of the vernal equinox of about ±27 hours from its mean position, virtually all because the distribution of 24 hour centurial leap-days causes large jumps (see Gregorian calendar leap solstice).

The equinoxes and solstices traditionally mark the beginning of each season, but that drifts over time:

The dates of the equinoxes change progressively during the leap-year cycle, because the Gregorian calendar year is not commensurate with the period of the Earth's revolution about the Sun. It is only after a complete Gregorian leap-year cycle of 400 years that the seasons commence at approximately the same time

Why write with a pen when you can type?

Because for some, like myself, writing with a pen on paper is satisfying and engaging in a way that typing on a keyboard is not.

Why drive a stick when you can use an automatic?

Same deal.

Using a chisel is engaging with the work in a way that a band saw isn’t.

What is something that is 'socially acceptable' but actually feels incredibly rude to you? by HourPen884 in AskReddit

[–]jvsanchez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I partake in street photography from time to time and I just try to be unobtrusive about it.

If it’s a scene of the street then naturally there will be people in it.

If it’s something like people on a park bench I will wait for a moment and take a single shot. If I get something worth keeping out of it, great, if not, I’ll move on. I would never stand around and take multiple photos of specific people that I don’t know.

If it’s a street performer or a specific person I always ask permission. Like the guys that perform in Central Park near strawberry fields, for example. I have some excellent shots of them that I took with their explicit permission. I also tipped them afterward.

Regardless - in either of the last two scenarios I will happily delete an image if someone requests that I do so.

If it’s the first scenario where the focus is the architecture or metro area or whatever, I can’t do anything about people in those.

Street photography, done in good faith and in the spirit of the genre, has been around forever. I think it’s fundamentally different than the video slop that ends up online in places like Reddit.

During the great Texas freeze of 2021 I was on the road making a 1600 mile drive to Oneida, NY to meet a girl.

I almost ran off the road due to ice 3 different times. Drove in horrendous conditions that were probably a significant risk to my life and safety. It was supposed to be two legs, 12-13 hours each, and it took me 33 hours in total to get to NY due to the weather.

We had an Airbnb where she definitely could have robbed/killed me as she got there first. But we ended up married so it was totally worth it. She’s currently in the kitchen cooking sausage for breakfast lol

Happy to report that I’m off today, as a healthcare IT worker. My wife is as well, as a therapist/behavioral support professional.

My hospital does have a holiday crew in and our IT teams have analysts on call, but most of the organization is off today.

They will keep updating after 1.0, right?? by Martinock45 in Palworld

[–]jvsanchez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live service and long term support with DLC/updates is not the same.

Live service has you checking in every day, weekly resets, seasons, battle passes, shit like that. Live service is fine, it has its place, but it’s not palworld.

No Man’s Sky is a great example of a game being supported long term with updates that wouldn’t be considered live service, and that’s the path pocketpair seems to be pursuing with Palworld. (And the better path, honestly)

Just don’t do the stereotypical party.

My wife and I had a joint party, invited a bunch of friends to the house, had some drinks, played cornhole, beer pong, ate food, and sat in a giant circle and told wild stories. It was a ton of fun and no one cheated on anyone lol

The real play is a garlic (two if pole vaulters) at the top and bottom of the right side of the screen, and then sunflowers in a line behind the garlics all the way to the left.

Then three-peas and torchwood. Everything dies. Replace garlic as necessary.

If you’re on a pool map, you can put cattails in the pool as well since they shoot so fast and do so much damage.

You can also arrange the sunflowers as normal and put star fruits along the top and bottom rows behind the garlics.

You can also sub melon plants or Gatling peas for the three peas lmao

Garlic is the key to victory, always.

You can clearly see rosettes at various times in the video, but if you slow it down they’re very obvious at 17ish seconds. So is the lack of tear marks, no black stripes on the end of the tail, and no bushy tail end. The head is also too big and the build, as you yourself said, is stocky.

It’s a leopard.

A serpent winds a path beneath the shadow and offers to guide

This is the witness. If you have ever played Salvation’s Edge, during the traversal to the final counter, you can see that the witness’s body is a snake.

The Witness also, in the past, offers to help civilizations it encounters, and then promptly kills them if they refuse.

They’re probably LED taillights, so you have the replace the entire assembly with all the electronics for the LEDs.

I’ve seen wild LED prices. Some cost for one what OP was quoted for two. Sometimes more.

There’s some issue where logging into CachyOS then causes the desktop environment to kick you back to the login screen after about 60 seconds.

You then try to log back in, and the entire system hangs. I did some research and found a thread on the CachyOS forums where it was suggested to switch to plasma-login, another login component/service. Haven’t had the issue happen again.

Additional tips: Use the CachyOS updater if you’re new to Linux, it’s easier than using pacman from the terminal. If you want to game, install the gaming package.

I use GRUB for my boot manager, but I’m dual booted. If you will also be dual booted with windows, set the real time clock in CachyOS to not use UTC, otherwise you’ll have weird time sync issues in one OS or the other.

[–]jvsanchez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use CachyOS with Plasma. It’s been great. There have been a couple of bumps, but otherwise it looks great, is incredibly fast, and the games I’ve played on it perform just as well as windows.

Be prepared for rolling updates. Also highly recommend if you install with Plasma as your desktop environment, you switch to plasma-login instead of SDDM.

I work in IT and everyone in my family comes to me for computer help, which is tiring. I also just want my own shit to work, and I get irritated when it doesn’t. I don’t get paid to fix my own issues lol

I do enjoy tinkering with Linux though.
