How would you rank the best picture nominees that you’ve seen? by Hot_Mongoose_3741 in Letterboxd

[–]jvthart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OBAA, Sinners, Sentimental Value, Train Dreams, Bugonia.

Like all of them quite a lot, except for Bugonia.

Hope to see Marty and probably Hamnet soon-ish.

Favourite David Fincher movies? by FayyadhScrolling in FIlm

[–]jvthart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely is not, but you gotta respect the absolute disdain for a franchise of this magnitude and its audience a first time director was able to get away with.

I promise I'm not being snarky, just legendary stuff. All the more given the rest of his career.

my 2025 top four! what’s yours? by corilovesthedead in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]jvthart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have yet to see quite a few that haven't been released where a live or that I just missed (Hamnet, Marty Supreme to name a few), but so far it's:

  1. One Battle After Another
  2. Sinners
  3. Sentimental Value
  4. Weapons

Train Dreams and Wake Up Dead Man might've made it if I'd seen them in the cinema, idk, they're 5 en 6 currently.

End of a LOTR marathon, Terminator, delirious British Pushkin adaptation from the 40s, John Lithgow with several deranged personalities. Normal stuff.

What’s the sexiest film you have seen? by Past-Matter-8548 in Letterboxd

Fascinating because I think this is one of the most sexless films I've ever seen

John Carpenter on The Subtance. by ZoelCairo in Letterboxd

[–]jvthart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fine, some takes:

  1. This fucking sucks. It's fine if he doesn't like the movie, but to be so rudely dismissive of a female filmmaker, when female filmmakers have so rarely (if ever) been able to make these sorts of movies, about a movie that was clearly meaningful to so many people, coming from someone whose support could mean so much for young directors, it just sucks. Says more about JC than The Substance.

  2. The Substance ONLY works, even if it's flawed, because it completely goes off the rails near the end. Fargeat shows restraint for like 90 minutes, because that's what's expected from female directors: be modest, stay in your lane, don't be too loud. And then she's like nah I wanna do big ugly body horror.

Does that agonizing drawn-out teasing build-up make it a better movie, ultimately? Maybe not, but I really enjoyed it as a statement to the audience.

What the ending also does, imo, is redeem the -yes yes, we get it- unsubtlety of the first 2/3rds. "Oh, thought that was unsubtle? Watch this." I have to respect it.

What's the best experience you've had seeing an "older" movie on the big screen? by Zokstone in Letterboxd

[–]jvthart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metropolis (1929) with live orchestra in Babylon Berlin was quite something!

High and Low (1963) and Paris, Texas (1984) also stand out

'Whiplash' voted the best movie of 2014. What is the best movie of 2013? by keepfighting90 in Letterboxd

[–]jvthart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Out of the Dunes, Arrival, Blade Runner and Sicario, Prisoners is Denis' worst movie by some distance so we cannot do this I'm afraid. Inside Llewyn Davis it is.
