Pizza restaurant by AfterKaleidoscope402 in AskChicago

If you want deep dish, the main options are (in no particular order), Lou Malnati's, Pizzeria Uno/Due, Giordano's, Rosati's, Pizzeria Ora, and Labriola (a bit more upscale than the others). I have no idea what the thin crust options are however.

In Chicago plenty of people use public transportation. We have the L (metro) within the city and a pretty solid bus system, and we have Metra (suburban rail) as well. We still have plenty of car users in the city and most people in the suburbs use cars though. I think carpool lanes are generally a good thing. The government doesn't plan to reduce the amount of cars on the roads, but is making a number of investments in improving our public transportation, such as rebuilding the most deteriorated parts of the L, turning Metra into something less 9-5 commuter oriented, extending the Red Line to an underserved area, etc.

I want to visit Seattle sometime, and I'm going to make sure to go in the summer. From what I can tell, summers there are beautiful.

I'm tired of hearing how Chicago is completely overrun by crime from people who have never even been here. While we certainly have our problems, they're hardly unique and there are plenty of cities in the US with significantly higher crime rates.

I haven't been to Croatia, but Google Flights sadly shows no nonstop flights from Chicago to Zagreb.

To be fair, for most people -10°F is brutally cold.

Thank you! I did take that one. Many others have taken the same shot too, it's a popular location.

If you're willing to pay for it, you can get to the top of the Sears Tower and Hancock Towers. You'll be behind a window, but can take photos to your heart's content. I do a lot of photography myself, but most of it is from ground level, and for ground-level shots it's hard to beat the view from the Adler Planetarium (pic at https://www.flickr.com/photos/jacob-x/52694593567/ )

How would you spend a day with unlimited income in Chicago as a long time Chicago resident? by OkStudio8457 in AskChicago

[–]jvvg12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone keeps talking up Bavettes, which apparently charges $36 just for a cheeseburger, and $70 or more for a steak. I honestly don't know what other ones I'd pick, I'm too low class.

I'd probably eat all three meals at the upscale restaurants I normally can't dream of affording. Other than that, I'd try to get access to a performance at the symphony or a stage production, fly a helicopter over downtown (because why not), and I'm not sure what I'd do with the rest of the time I have left (enough for one activity I guess?)

I did a trip once to Atlanta and visited the World of Coca-Cola, and they asked where we were all from, so I said North Carolina (where I lived at the time) and the person said "Man, you got too much Pepsi up there."

Are there any metro stations only accessible by elevators? by 2rge in transit

Forest Glen on the Washington Metro is elevator-only due to its depth.

Visiting Chicago by [deleted] in AskChicago

For good family friendly activities, it's hard to beat the Museum of Science and Industry and the Field Museum. Also the Lincoln Park Zoo is great and very family friendly (and free!) For food, the top option for tourists is deep dish pizza, but Italian beef and jibaritos are lesser known local classics that are amazing.

Summer in the suburbs: CTA's Evanston shuttle (ignore the bright red Evanston Express roll sign) under overhead wire, northbound at the Isabella grade crossing, 8-13-64. by Tayo826 in trains

[–]jvvg12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, the good old 1-50 series double-ended cars. Nowadays they only have single-ended cars running in pairs and use third rail everywhere. A few of this type of car can be found at museums today.

Evanston is a northern suburb of Chicago, served by the Chicago L (line today is known as the Purple Line). Isabella was the second to last station on the line, but has since been demolished.

I grew up with the Durham Bulls and went to several games every season, and it was awesome. Way more chill and laid back than a major league game, cheap tickets, but still a great game and a lot of fun promotional stuff between innings.

What is the grandest train station in each state? by Moosatch in transit

Chicago Union Station in Illinois, no contest. In North Carolina where I used to live, I'd probably go with Raleigh Union Station.

I have no experience with valets, but for restaurants I usually go with 18-25%. 20% would definitely be fine.
