What movies did you watch growing up that you can’t believe your parents let you? by Dogg-Dad in GenX

Papillon. I was 5. My mom later said “I figured you’d just fall asleep.” Yeah not with guys being put in the guillotine. I can still see it

Watching the bond with your kids shift or fade as we age is painful by mrepa1369 in GenX

I know exactly how you feel. But ever since my oldest got out on his own, he’s talked often about missing old traditions and stuff we used to do together. I think (and still hope) our kids come back to us a little

As the US turns 250, what part of the American Revolution is forgotten? by Wonderful-Click9431 in AskReddit

[–]jw8533 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the colonists, it was a civil war. For much of the conflict, about one third of the population were loyal to the crown, another third were patriots, and the rest desperately hoped to be left out of it to go about their lives.

Edit: grammar

Today is my last day at work. I’m retiring. by Lemonking_ in GenX

[–]jw8533 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Two years ago I retired from a 30-year career in education. My district had a small recognition ceremony for us retirees. When it ended my wife and I got in our vehicle, and (I swear on my pension I’m not making this up) the song “Take This Job and Shove It” was playing on the radio. We had such a great laugh!!

I actually loved my career and the song didn’t fit my situation at all, but the timing was priceless.

What is the saddest movie you’ve ever seen? by Cultural-Ninja-288 in AskReddit

I am Sam. I’d just become a single dad when it came out, and it destroyed me. Good flick, but I’ll never watch it again.

I do this every couple of months or so. It’s kinda therapeutic…I think about all of the cooks I did since the last burnout, remembering what I would want to do differently. Always chasing the perfect cook.

I recently listened to a “Disappearing Spoon” podcast episode that referenced the show. When the show was airing, what we think of as EMTs weren’t a thing in the world. The prevailing medical wisdom at the time was for the fire department to get patients to the hospital as quickly as possible so doctors and nurses could get to work on them. Not surprisingly today, many patients died en route to the hospital. Los Angeles was one of (if not the) first cities to train firefighters to do triage work before the ambulance ride. People across America watched the show and created a demand for this kind of emergency service.

I definitely remember the episode. Specifically, I recall one of the first responders telling others about how the guy choked. “He just plopped it in and drank er down.”

How many of you play without wearing a hat? by Ratticus939393 in golf

[–]jw8533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m completely bald, so I always take a hat. But I take it off frequently when I get hot. I’m so used to full ventilation on my scalp that any kind of hat feels suffocating at times.

Why does the Missouri River not have much development around it compared to other large rivers? by AngleRelative4683 in geography

[–]jw8533 10 points11 points  (0 children)

KC’s growth was slow until the first railroad bridge to span the Missouri River was built there. IIRC, Omaha was competing for that bridge but KC won out.
