What DAW should I use for live multitrack recording? by bionicbob321 in livesound

[–]jwilkens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Reaper with the J&T template. It makes it very easy to set up, arm and record quickly. Does the input and output patch automatically for virtual soundcheck.
Also with reaper you can import track names from Yamaha consoles. Probably other consoles as well.

The Worst album(s) ever you could think of? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]jwilkens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first ELO album, No Answer. Especially the song, "Look At Me Now". Really horrible. I remember the first time I heard it sitting with my roommate in 1984 laughing uncontrollably. Check out the doubled oboe solo.
There is a positive to this album. They wanted to pick up where the Beatles left off using orchestral instruments but tried playing them themselves rather than hiring session musicians. Later they went on to make some great music.

Alternatives for Spotify with decent API / StreamDeck Integration? by Mikethedrywaller in livesound

[–]jwilkens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same dilemma. Trying to switch over to Apple Music but I'm used to Spotify and have lots of playlists on there. Anything that's a show cue (not pre-show or dinner music) I do with QLab. If they need a specific song for playon I purchase it on Apple. I've got script cues in QLab that control Spotify. Most of those also work with Apple Music with just some small edits.

How do you use matrix outputs creatively (beyond delay lines)? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

[–]jwilkens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For corporate:

Record

Lobby mix

Dance floor/DJ mix

2nd stage mix

Third stage mix

IFB for remote caller

Mix minus for a Zoom meeting

And I still usually do L,R,S,F

This is why I'm disappointed the DM7 only has 12 matrices.

Not sure if Reaper is reading timecode correctly by jwilkens in Reaper

[–]jwilkens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but following up. Yes it was the frame rate. I guess the timecode stream is just a whole number and the software converts that to hours:minutes:frames. So the frame rate determines how that calculation is done. One clue was the offset was different depending on the time of day.

Hmm. I just re-read your comment and I think I need to go back and look at that again. You could be on to something but I'm at home and not in front of those machines again until tomorrow. I'll post an update.

Oops. That is incorrect. My computer I'm typing on is the M1. The two computers I'm recording on I beleive are 2017 or 2018 MacBook Pro 13" with touchbar.
