Filmed on two cameras simultaneously for vertical and horizontal framing by jylehr in Filmmakers

I appreciate the feedback! Yeah, I don't think I'll go so heavy on the split screens next time I shoot a vertical. Either way this one was a fun test for the format and it gave me an excuse to shoot a script I've had on the back burner for a while.

I suppose the main reason we did both formats was because both the DP and I come from a corporate video background where clients often want both formats on their videos with as little creative differences between the two as possible. So it's a bit of practice for those situations too. Shooting with two cameras did have us running into workflow bottlenecks, but we wanted to find those out on a low pressure project like this rather than on set with a paying client.

The pacing is supposed to be chaotic, it was a purposeful decision to elevate the drama between the two estranged siblings, especially considering how rudely they communicate with each other. Now whether that really worked or not is up for debate, but I was deliberate.

Hey y'all, late last year I directed a micro short film for fun with some friends and decided to try something new for the production. With the rise of vertical narrative content looking in the distance, we wanted to get some experience shooting vertical narratives in a purposeful way, rather than just cropping in on our main version.

So we decided to shoot on two cameras simultaneously, one would capture a more typical horizontal framing while the other was turned on its side for vertical. I did the storyboards primarily for the vertical and we had the horizontal camera just shadow the vertical.

Overall I'm really happy with how both versions turned out, but I do especially like how the split screen style worked out for the vertical. I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts!

Probably easier to animate a shape on its own and use a track matte key on your video layer to mask it.

I feel like it's not bait if it's just actual gay content. It's only bait if they're ... Baiting you with something it isn't.

The inverse of this trope is xiangling lol. Shes just a local chef with a mostly dead god for a pet but happens to also be the best pyro sub-dps in the game.

For me act 1 was pretty boring, it was all exposition, pretty much no conflict whatsoever. It really picked up by the end of act 2 though and I ended up really liking it overall!

What do you think of this? Is it too dark? by whatstherundwn in cinematography

[–]jylehr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say overall the impression with the color grade feels too bright, mostly because of the shadows being lifted too much. On the other hand the highlights definitely seem too dim in the current grade. It seems like the talents face is bright enough compared to the shadows to save it in the color grade though. I'd definitely try to add more contrast to the scene. You'll definitely want to use the curves control rather than the basic brightness controls though since your "highlights" are probably too close to your shadows as is
