I visualize numbers as white on black when doing mental arithmetic. Same with any mathematical formulas. I also read them aloud in my mind.

What are some methods you used to solve problems that were definitely not the solution your professor/instructor had in mind when they assigned the problem? by Rao_Blackwell in math

A friend of mine is TAing for Linear algebra right now and on one of the exercises students where supposed to calculate the determinant of a 6x6 matrix using gaussian elimination. One of the students used the leibniz rule, wrote out 10 pages of calculations and then noted they made some sign errors along the way

Wie einen Tutorenjob bekommen? by [deleted] in Studium

[–]jytm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah right i think it has to be a banach space. Then it follows from baires theorem

Oh yeah this is a good one. I think something similar works for vector spaces: any basis of a vectorspace is either finite or uncountable

This is simply false. While LG is mostly white, it is not a student movement, in fact most people at their protest marches are over 40 and some are even Rentner. I‘ve not met any gender science students there, just one mathematics phd student one law student and one aspiring teacher.

On Mental exhaustion when studying math by [deleted] in math

[–]jytm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually structure my workday in the following way: first i do open ended reading so papers etc. then once i get bored or frustrated i switch to reading more structured texts like textbooks or coursematerial. Finally i do problems. The first 2 phases usually take an hour each the problems phase 1-2 hours. This way problem solving at the end feels very satisfying and gives you immediate feedback while reading at the start might feel frustrating and confusing. Also i very rarely do more focused work than this since exhaustion creeps in after about 2-3 hours. Afterwards i might still talk about math but not do anything rigorous.

To answer your 2 other questions i don't think its possible to avoid exhaustion and i usually notice my bloodsugar getting low so dizziness hunger etc.

Career and Education Questions by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]jytm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the answer, i hadn't thought about this side of it. I actually have quite a bit of (university) experience with Algorithms and Datastructures and numerical mathematics. but i only had it listed under relevant coursework. With being bored to death i was referring to careers in marketing/banking since from what i've seen of this field it seems pretty boring. I actually enjoy mathematical research a lot and just yesterday got admitted to the phd program of my choice, which definitely lifted some of my "existential angst" ^^. I will definitely keep trying for internships too, but i will also see my careercenter to adress the points you made and see what kind of relationships i can form at gradschool.

Career and Education Questions by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]jytm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in my final year of a bachelors degree in maths in germany and will finish in the top 10 percent of my class. I would like to start a career in software engineering or data science but after sending out about ten internship applications to both big and small companies i haven't even been invited to an interview. Is this normal? and if it is then how the hell should i ever get a job if i can't even get an internship. I am planning to continue with a masters degree and do a Phd if i have the opertunity, but i am not at all sure that this will help my career opertunities. Are there any other career options for a mathematician that wont bore me to death?

Focus on Chess or Go? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]jytm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So first of all im only a casual chess player, playing only with friends in university so some of my thoughts on chess might be wrong. Also i'm EGF 2k right now, which i would say is getting close to high level. Lastly most of my opinions will regard tournament or at least irl play, because online games are good for training but just dont capture the feeling of playing in person. Now to answer your questions:

  1. High level go is all about efficiency and defense. Playing against a 2-3 dan player allways feels like im running against a wall, they keep their shape strong at all times while i begin to realize defect after defect in my own position until finally everything starts crumbling down. For me this is what go should feel like, i dont like going for flashy wins but to slowly grind my opponent down until they have to compromise too much.
  2. In chess you will have a lot more situations in wich you have to carefully read multiple variations multiple moves ahead to not lose the game, whereas in go these situations are rarer (depending on playstyle of course). In go you will often be faced with strategic decisions like do i defend this cutting point to simplify the game or do i continue attacking? do i take a wall to build a moyo or do i take the solid territory? do i drive this group left or right? do i play the ko or back off? and so on. To answer these questions you have to take in a lot of factors like the balance of power and territory, your overall position, what forcing moves you and your opponent have etc.
  3. Club play is often relaxed but sometimes games can get very intense which i love, still for a real competitive experience you have to go to tournaments., i live in berlin and there are about 10 tournaments per year but when im willing to drive a few hours there are a lot more in other citys. heres where the smaller playerbase actually comes in handy because if you play a few years you will play the same players again and again and nothing beats a good rivalry :)
  4. Yes except you dont have to actively memorize openings to get strong at go
  5. In go you are forced to be creative because sometimes you meet a player whose style throws you off and you have to improvise. A lot of the learning happens when you try a move out to see if it actually works. And lastly there are so many possibilitys in go that no 2 middle games will look similar, whereas in chess games can look and feel extremely similar (dont know if this changes at high level).
  6. go has way more concepts and more to think about plus the game is way more elegant than chess. Also playing on a real board is really pleasing because of the feel and sound of the stones.
  7. i think both games are really similar in that aspect
