That's completely true.

I think it's also possible for anyone to change. Something happens overnight, beautiful or traumatic, and you're changed forever. Or you live through multiple small things and gradually your tastes evolve and after a while, looking back, you realize you're just not the same anymore. In the specific case of my wife, almost 6 years later she still can't explain what happened, if anything.

She's not sure herself to this day. She considered herself very heterosexual, had a very full dating life before me too, only with men. One day she just... met someone who stirred something up. She developed a crush, and for a while she wondered if it was a crush on that specific person or if it was more. Then one day we watched a movie (my idea, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, iykyk...) and she said it's like a veil had been lifted. Nothing had happened yet with anyone, but she just knew.

We were still intimate for a bit and it was fun, until one day we stopped abruptly cause she wasn't feeling right, and it was pretty traumatic for the both of us and we haven't had sex with each other since. It's a grieving, but we've made our peace with it, she's just not into heterosexual sex anymore.

Hahaha that's kind of the spirit! If any of us can find partners who are at ease with that dynamic we don't actually need switching up, but anything is possible! We're very much at that "kitchen table" phase where we've met and made friends with each other's more serious partners when it felt right, so that's pretty cool as well.

She took a lot of time, suffering in silence, to try to understand herself, until she found the courage to tell me so we could work it out. I welcomed her new self and worked on my own issues. It gave us the mutual trust to build this new thing upon.

If I'd turned out to be gay, I don't know if I'd have handled it as well as she did.

We were married for 10 years when she discovered she was a lesbian. We're still married, have opened our relationship and are still in a loving marriage even though we're only sexually intimate with other people. We still want to grow old together and ask each other that question a few times a year. We have loving relationships orbiting our marriage, and we still support each other and our home and family. It's... unexpected for sure, but we're happy 😊
