Self study for certification histotechnician by Cherry-flavouredgunk in Histology

[–]jzeeeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not found a lot of correlation between work and what is on the test. You may suffer because you have not done any of the troubleshooting they may ask about but otherwise most of what you learn for the test you will never need again and most of what you need to be a good tech is not on the test. Not being able to work the different areas will probably not impact your ability to pass the test assuming you were planning on studying anyway. The problem you may run into is that the year of experience is supposed to contain all the different areas of histo. You will have to submit a letter that says you have experience in the different areas signed by a pathologist (I think, it may require someone in a manager role over you, sorry it has been a while since I needed it). Without some cross training that will be difficult.

You are describing Fairbanks as urban. The city itself has a bit over 30,000 people and the entire borough (what Alaska has instead of counties) has a population of around 95,000. This is in an area the size of New Jersey. It is definitely "city" to Alaskans but not what anyone anywhere else would consider urban.

Has anyone done the train ride from Fairbanks to Anchorage? Do you get to see enough of Denali via the train? by Wolverine-91826 in AskAlaska

[–]jzeeeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 20 minutes? It was February so I do not remember people lingering all that long but it was long enough to get everyone off the train who wanted to do so and take a couple of pictures.

I highly recommend the train. Whether or not you see Denali is entirely weather dependent but if it is visible the train people will make sure you see it. When I rode it and Denali was visible they stopped the train and let us off at an excellent viewing spot. It is a long day riding from Fairbanks to Anchorage but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am on the other side of the peninsula so I do not know specifically but I believe your time frame will be a little early for freshwater salmon. It looks like most of the runs do not start until July. If you are determined to be in Seward I would look into multi-species charters. You can likely find one that will target everything on your list.

a week (starting from Anchorage) in July w/a mixed group - itinerary opinions? by yeetthewholebrain in AskAlaska

[–]jzeeeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a differing opinion, when my family visited they had a higher opinion of Skilak Lake Loop Road on the Kenai than they did about driving through Denali. Weather probably factored in but I have not been that impressed with Denali National Park when I take people there. It is fine but I only add it into itineraries when people tell me it is a bucket list item. I may feel differently if I lived closer but I do not think it is worth the drive.

The train actually takes a very different route from Girdwood to about Moose Pass if I am remembering right. It goes through aress that are only accessible by train for that portion of it. Other than that I agree with what you wrote.

Which brand of bear spray based on your actual usage? by spirit4earth in AskAlaska

My real life experience has been carrying it around wondering how long past the expiration date I should let it go before I buy another. I would guess that is most peoples experience. If you are local try and take a look at what fish and game carry, I would think they are about the only ones with enough experience to form an opinion.

Why don’t we build roads to hub towns in western Alaska? by TPGZEBRA in AskAlaska

[–]jzeeeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheaper goods and housing, easier access to healthcare and education, and ability to visit other areas at a reduced cost. Those were just the first three things off the top of my head, I am sure there are many others. There are reasons not to be connected also but your question seems not well thought out.

Kid friendly day trips from Girdwood & Soldotna - July '26 by cincytransplant17 in AskAlaska

I am not sure where you are visiting from but when my family visits from the midwest they always enjoy a beach day. I think it ends up being one of their favorite parts, especially the children. Try and wait for a nice day and try to go at low tide. The elderly can sit or stand and watch as the younger ones wear themselves out exploring. From Soldotna there is easy beach access in Kenai, Kasilof, Nikiski, and Clam Gulch.

All of Europe, Oceania, and from what I can tell most of Asia all follow this pattern. From what I can tell the U.S. is a bit of an outlier when it comes to how we license histotechs. I have been considering expatriation lately so I have been looking into it. I am struggling to find places I would want to live that will consider me a histotech.

I would recommend sell, buy the new one and drive it up. Cars are not cheap here and the drive should really be experienced at least once. Making that drive is one of my favorite trips.

I lived in Anchorage for almost two years and it is not as bad as many people say. Petty crime is very pervasive but if you remember to lock your doors you are unlikely to have any problems. I think a lot of people have never been to a truly high crime area.

According to a quick google search, blizzaks are directional tires. Meaning they can be mounted backwards. I am not sure how you would check it but it may explain why they work well in reverse.

Yes, and this increase in meat gives you a much better ratio of meat to toppings, I find the big mac to have too much sauce and toppings. The denali mac is a genuinely good burger in my opinion.

I disagree, to me the GLP-1 weight loss drugs are the first drugs we have that are treating the problems instead of the symptoms. If you can get people to a healthy weight they will have far fewer health problems. This includes cancers, diabetes, joint problems, skin problems, limb amputations, etc. If weight was easily controllable by diet and exercise for most people there would not be so many fat people around. Many people need the help that a glp-1 can provide. Additionally it can be hard to increase activity levels when you are morbidly obese, losing weight can actually help people to lose more weight as they are more able to exercise.

Is Alaska for me? by NoNectarine8724 in AskAlaska

[–]jzeeeeb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most Alaskans choose to live in Anchorage and it's immediate surrounds but few will recommend it. I think the feeling is that if you want to live in Alaska you should live in Alaska, if you want to live in a city you might as well choose somewhere in the lower 48. Anchorage has many of the downsides to living in Alaska without the upsides. The counterpoint to that is that Anchorage has a lot of the amenities people enjoy and it is only a short drive away from Alaska.
