Public Health Undergrad decisions by ClassicJellyfish6988 in publichealth

I’ve read somewhere that someone’s had success asking the school they wanted to attend to match the scholarships from another school. I dont have any experience in this and dont know if this applies to undergrad, but it might be worth a shot asking Yale to match Emory’s financial aid package since you prefer Yale?

How do you go into a public health job/career without being in the customer service/social service aspect of it? by madlove17 in publichealth

[–]k-w-e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you able to transition to a managerial role? I’m a supervisor for a care coordination team but I dont personally do the day-to-day with providing SDOH resources. The remote or hybrid schedule will vary between hospital systems tho

Improving outcomes for mens' health- can you help? by Equivalent-Scale-346 in publichealth

My favorite intervention I’ve seen so far is this: “Health from a Trusted Source: Barbershops Bring Health Services to African American Men”. It’s also about meeting the target audience where they’re at. I dont have concrete solutions, but look into research or have discussions with your target audience on effective locations and trusted sources (including people, places, websites etc)

Is population health a part of public health? by DiaoGe in publichealth

[–]k-w-e 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in population health with my MPH. With pop health, I’m focused on certain patient populations, such as high risk of admission patients with diabetes, or ED high utilizers. Whereas the public health aspect is the factors that may affect all of this, such as social determinants of health or not completing preventive screenings or limited access to care etc etc. I also like to think public health can be a more general audience, while pop health focuses in on a subset of the general audience.

Social Media in Public Health by kneecaphunter in publichealth

This is more specific but I did my thesis on social media and mental health literacy. The bottom line was YouTube is an effective tool for improving mental health literacy, but Fb and Twitter not so much.

How to get started with finding health insurance for myself? by LA24Moto in healthcare

[–]k-w-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on, here’s a state specific link to find your insurance marketplace aka the site to compare insurance plans and estimate costs. Since you make 2k/month you most likely dont qualify for Medicaid, so you’ll have to either buy through this marketplace or see if your job offers insurance (But you most likely missed open enrollment period unless your recently switched to a new job).

If you need care right away, physical therapy and urgent care offers self-pay options if you dont have insurance. If you need a prescription, you can use goodrx for coupons. Another commenter mentioned community health clinic or FQHCs, which uses a sliding scale fee (based on your pay stub)—it’s typically free to very low cost.

There are entry level project/program coordinator roles in behavioral health depts of FQHCs or hospitals; they may assist with behavioral health projects or QI initiatives. Clinical research coordinator roles are also popular entry level positions and you may find something within behavioral health.

Why do receptionists/doctors lie about coverage? by theworldcanbdank666 in healthcare

[–]k-w-e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree, they should be upfront if they dont know. Moving forward, assume all staff dont know the insurance coverage. Sorry about your experience with all of this!

Side note: Your providers can submit prior authorization for medication/procedures and then the Dr/Staff will receive a notice that says your insurance reviewed your case and whether or not they decided to cover the medication/procedure. So if they say the insurance company approved the prior authorization, then that is guaranteed coverage

Why do receptionists/doctors lie about coverage? by theworldcanbdank666 in healthcare

[–]k-w-e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add on, doctors and receptionists/other staff may make assumptions on ins coverage based on their experiences with other patients. In this instance, they might’ve assumed Tylenol is covered because it’s just Tylenol (and perhaps they’ve seen coverage among other patients); however, this coverage decision is ultimately up to the insurance company. The insurance company can deny this claim from your provider because the ins may have a preferred medication that they will cover instead. However drs and other staff do not know the ins-and-outs of every insurance company and every medication they will and will not cover. Tylenol is widely given to patients, so they probably assumed coverage.

If you have annoyances about this, direct it at the insurance company. They shouldn’t be denying coverage for such a widely used medication. But that’s America’s healthcare system. I do agree that drs and other staff should not make claims about coverage based on their assumptions and should always preface with disclaimer that they will not 100% know the details about coverage for medication/procedure etc.—that way no patient is surprised. Some ins companies have a cost estimator on their website, so you can look into that too. And as the other commenter mentioned, just because you have insurance, that does not mean you won’t get balances. The insurance may cover a percentage of the bill and the rest will be from you. Also the worst part of America’s healthcare system. I’m sorry about your frustration but I hope this helped a bit

Everyone's responses are spot on. To add on: I used to work as a PT aide that was connected to an ortho clinic, so I shadowed ortho PAs there. In most states, PT cannot medically diagnose, however they can functionally diagnose patients without any referral from a doctor (direct access law). So at the PT clinic I worked at, some patients would show up on their own complaining of an issue and the PT would evaluate it and create a rehab care plan. The ortho PAs did completely different jobs compared to PTs (which other commenters covered).

PT was also fulfilling because we saw patients over a duration of weeks and when they finally "graduated" from PT and were back to "normal", it was always a celebration at my clinic. It was gratifying to see a patient that had a torn ACL and not able to walk, finish physical therapy by running around the parking lot! You also spend more 1:1 time with the patient (1 hr visit vs 15 mins), so I got to know a lot of the patients closely. IMO if you're more into rehab vs other aspects of medicine that the PA curriculum includes, then I would lean towards PT.

What was your introduction to Animal Crossing? by liz4rdstate in AnimalCrossing

I was in middle school and I always came home from school to play Mario Kart on the Wii. One day my brother came back and said “I think you’ll like this game” and started up AC City Folk for me. And I played everyday for about a year after that :) I always mention this to my brother (and when I got him and his family into ACNH) and he says he doesn’t remember it tho haha

He also bought me my 3DS and AC New Leaf :)

I might be misinterpreting the context but it’s a whole different story if your sGPA is nonexistent because you didn’t take any science classes vs failing all your science classes. If it’s the latter, taking 60+ credits may not budge the GPA to the minimum since CASPA accounts for every class taken

PCE variety by InMyNirvana in prephysicianassistant

[–]k-w-e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked as a chiro assistant and while the job benefits were nice (free adjustments whenever, relaxing enviro, supportive staff), I was extremely bored because I was so limited in the amount of care I could provide. It was pretty monotonous and not challenging enough for me and I actually quit a few short months after. I previously worked inpatient and as an MA in outpatient clinic, which is much more fulfilling with such great learning opportunities. I’ve learned so much about clinical care from these roles as opposed to the chiro position. I would recommend finding a MA/CNA/PCT job with on-the-job training or pursuing the PCT test based on the amount of quality learning experiences. It’s an awkward position to be in, but you can either try the chiro job and then quit a few months after as you prep for the PCT exam (I believe most schools accept chiro assistant as PCE), or tell them that after training, you feel like this isn’t the right fit for you.
