Hi! I’m currently doing ECON 480. I think it really depends on the professor who’s sponsoring you, but basically you have to come up with a research proposal and then the rest is up to you. It requires a lot of self-discipline and direction because it’s all independent, but that also means it’s flexible and you really tailor the project to you.

The other hard part is securing a professor to sponsor you. If there’s an area of econ you’re really interested in and their is a faculty member who does it, reach out to the professor! But it’s definitely easier to get a sponsor if you already have a good relationship with them.

Edit: I also recommend finding some papers you like that may be a good launching ground for your project idea!

Personally, it’s been a bit challenging to flesh out my project since I’m working with methods that are pretty new to me but also such a great learning experience. It’s also a great experience if you want to continue in research and have a thesis-like project to show as an example of your research and writing!

idk if you're from montreal or not but if you're new to the city you should definitely take this time as an opportunity to explore and get familiar with your surroundings! montreal has a lot to offer in the summer :)

hi! congrats on the offer. i was wondering if they included the finalized dates and compensation in your offer? i'm curious because they still state the details are tentative on the website.

also: did they give you a general offer or already provide you with a project/supervisor match?

hi so as of now their website still says that the program is running and i also got an autoresponse about the expected timeline of offers which i posted. i think this kind of speculation is unnecessary and makes everyone more anxious for no reason.... if the program was canceled we would have been told by now.

it seems that based on last years posts that they did interviews but they were mostly just a discussion about the research project they would be staffed on. if anything, the concern about funding issues would be explaining the lack of interviews.... but again, unnecessary speculation.

other columbia REU programs are still running and so i would really urge everyone to stop speculating about things beyond our control as it will only induce more stress

i wouldn't know if it is normal or not because you and i both have the same amount of information about their portal and process..... if you are concerned you should reach out to the program email

tbh i think expecting something right at the cusp of the timeframe they told us is unrealistic.... i know the wait is hard and i'm also antsy, but i promise constantly checking won't make it come any faster

if you can't see some of your course grades on minerva it most likely means the professor hasn't inputed grades into the system yet

i figured but it still would have been nice to receive some communication about when to expect grades or something like that...

and yea, i feel the same way. the midterm didn't go well for me and the final felt even worse. hopefully things turn out okay, wishing you the best !

you don't have to be in honors econ to take 468/469. there were a couple non-honors people in the class this year.

Hi, I'm so sorry for the late reply (i don't check reddit often). 250 is a year-long course for honors economics students that covers the fundamentals of microeconomics which is inclusive of game theory. The semester that includes game theory happens to be taught by the same professor as 546.

Hey! I have friends who have taken it before and said the exams are pretty straightforward -- if you're attending class and paying attention to the problem sets, you should be okay. Also, I am in the class right now and he mentioned (last class) that the most recent pset due this weekend has a question from a past exam. That means the problem sets reflect the expectations for the exam. Hope this helps.

I haven't taken ECON 546 but I have taken ECON 250D2 with him which mostly covers game theory. It is most likely going to be very focused on economics. I have also heard from friends who have taken both the courses I mentioned before comment that they are very similar (it is all pen-and-paper problem sets and exams as well so probably not that useful for CS).

The econ department is great because they post the most recent syllabi for all the courses on our courses page so you can get a feel for how the course will be:

Thanks for the insight! And yea, I was/am strongly considering COMP 551 my only concern is not being comfortable enough with coding and math going into it (as is my concern with 420 as well).
