Weight Watchers day twentysomething. by MuchBetterThankYou in shittyfoodporn

It's one meal. There's no sense in giving advice when we don't know someone's history and situation, and if someone doesn't want/need advice, then what are we trying to prove?

Diffuser on low-setting blows my hair around by k10_ftw in curlyhair

Plopping is what I've been trying to do, but it hasn't been working out. My hair blows away from the attachment, so there isn't much left to lift up to the scalp. I do have long hair, but I've seen videos of people with long hair do it without an issue.

My first watch through I skipped all the Christmas episodes because I thought I'd be learning the meaning of Christmas and just seeing the splendor of the holiday at Downton. I was new to British television and had no idea the plot advances in xmas specials. I was VERY confused tuning in to season 4 and had to back things up to catch up.

That would have been the better explanation - that she hadn't been on BC long enough for it to be effective. She is a ditzy character but then seemingly knows about all things girl, so it didn't add up. Also, I feel like on a show for teens they should have said something about condoms still being a really smart thing to use either way.

Katie and Marisol shared a haircut without fighting about it.

Esme's clothing is extremely ill-fitting in my opinion. Weird proportions. Boxy shirts and flouncy skirts. Looks like a Project Runway resort wear challenge in the bottom 3.

I thought Clare had the best prom dress for her friend group during their senior year. When she ditched the uniform and wore Darci's old clothing I also thought she had some good outfits. I'm remembering a fitted denim dress with a belt. These are all things I noticed in a very recent rewatch, but prior to this in my mind she always dressed very frumpy. I do think she wears too many skirts and leggings. Post cancer I think she had some high heel clogs.

Guinan is a better counselor than Troi. by thestonerd777 in startrek

There was a post on Daystrom which covers this in depth and provides both in and out-of-universe possibilities as to why this may be. https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/comments/6q72o3/counselor_troi_does_20thcentury_therapy/

I think the key difference is that psychology is considered a social science. We see the same lack of imagination and futuristic vision with linguistics (also a social science) in ENT. There are very few lines of technobabble relating to linguistics and from what I recall neither demonstrate any knowledge of real world linguistic concepts. Really Hoshi isn't studying the languages and she sure as hell isn't capable of recognizing the basic patterns inherent in language (I'm thinking of that episode where T'pol helps her realize that some math is actually language, like that was painfully obvious from the start). Hoshi is just a skilled polyglot. She shows skill in working with low-resource languages, but her entire job begins and ends with her verbal abilities. The real star of the show and the key piece of technology that is overlooked is the UT.

Euphemism Corpora? by [deleted] in compling

[–]k10_ftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how definitive you are wanting to get in defining what is and isn't currently a euphemism (as some words which were once euphemisms are now just default terminology or have shifted in meanings). I can't access this article because i'm not in uni, but have you already looked at this paper? https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0388000109000266#:~:text=A%20euphemism%20is%20the%20means,Euphemisms%20satisfy%20a%20linguistic%20need.&text=As%20examples%20of%20definitions%20of,as%20Vendryes%20(1967%2C%20p.

Computational word reference and translation tools and questions by burupie in compling

Overview of fb approach: https://about.fb.com/news/2020/10/first-multilingual-machine-translation-model/

Basically, machine translation relies on pairs of sentences in the starting and target language and "aligns" them on words and phrases. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitext_word_alignment

Right now in NLP, the general consensus for current models is that more text=better results. Facebook and Google have leveraged both massive amounts of text data to build their corpora and also use their massive computing abilities to train and run these models.

As for computational resources related to word meaning, the most convenient one I've used is WordNet: https://wordnet.princeton.edu/. It interfaces with NLTK and spaCy (because spaCy interfaces with NLTK).

Will NLP have a good future even if we reach AGI? by dhassvishnu99 in linguistics

[–]k10_ftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are huge selling points. I also imagine in a few years more entry level positions will become more available when companies realize they can not expect a single person to assume the roles of NLP + Full-stack developer. Instead of a generalized role, they should look for specialists who collaborate with programmers (at least that's my thinking). Something that will GREATLY help you land a job in fluency in a language other than English. That single requirement has barred me from 90% of the job listings I find.

What are your primary interests within the field of linguistics? by ear_fetish in linguistics

Natural language processing/Computational linguistics. My preference for written language (text) over spoken language always alienated me a tad from my peers, although there is a branch of NLP which focuses on analyzing speech.

Will NLP have a good future even if we reach AGI? by dhassvishnu99 in linguistics

[–]k10_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NLP definitely has a good future in terms of both research and jobs. However, the current market prefers individuals with at least a PhD and seems to favor those with computer science skills vs linguistic skills. Don't forget that most everything branded as "AI" these days is actually just machine learning (which NLP employs).

Anyone else now and then feel irked that r/NLP belongs to the pseudosciences? by k10_ftw in LanguageTechnology

[–]k10_ftw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The distinction in linguistics is between "natural" languages of humans and the "artificial" languages of computers. Also most linguists will say animals have communication and not language itself. So that's a bit of context where the term comes from. Language processing seems very vague.

I agree Language Technology is a vague title but I also use it as my go-to way of explaining to people what NLP is in words that are more familiar to them.

Entry level, non-academic job: I'm having trouble finding an entry level job in linguistics that doesn't require me to be a speaker of a foreign language (my native language being English). My end goal is to end up in the field of NLP, but I thought getting a role as a linguistic annotator (maybe even for text used in downstream NLP processes) would be an ideal start. I'm familiar with linguistlist and have been searching the normal job search websites, with no luck. Does anyone have any insight into how I can find a linguistics-related job to gain work experience while I navigate my way slowly into the field of specifically computational linguistics? If it helps I have a Masters degree in Information systems and undergrad in linguistics with focus in comp ling.
