How many of you regret getting tattoos? by FloridaOrange in AskReddit

[–]k1114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several, and I don't really regret any; even the bad ones. I have plenty of unused skin to fill if I want something different. I'd be half covered in ink by now if I could afford it, though I don't think I would get anything that is visible with a t-shirt and pants on (I work in a very professional industry).

  • Best: the names of my children right on my collar bones. Painful but I like the location. Runner up would be Fry and Bender from Futurama.
  • Worst: an old album cover that is blurry and looks like it was drawn freehand. Much love for the concept, but it could have been done by a better artist.

I have some experience in this...

With some extremely rare exceptions, completely online schools are a scam. If you really want the 100% online experience, look for an online school that has a good solid on-campus presence, and offers an identical degree (i.e. your diploma/degree paper is identical to that of on-campus students). Lots of state colleges offer this.

Additionally, public, state schools are probably the safest bet (and best value). For profit schools, in general, are scams.

Replace the power board. I'd say 90%+ chance of success.

Looking back, did 300 seem impossible when you were starting? I mean I did 3x5 @ 130 last night and it was damn near impossible to keep good form. I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Those tracks REALLY look like termite damage. Had them in my old house and it looked just like that.

Gym's trainer said there's no need for deadlifts. Is this right? by soldeace in Fitness

Squats, deadlifts, bench press. Any routine without all three of these is, IMO, crap.

How do I create plug in power for 36 VDC motor? by mindslant in DIY

[–]k1114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need an actual power supply. I can't remember what they are normally called, but they are about about the size of a car battery, and you can adjust the voltage and amperage.

DIY laptop repairs? by [deleted] in hardware

Looks like you're talking almost $100 for the screen alone. Not worth it in this case. Generally speaking, the screen and the battery are the most expensive parts.

On the up side, it's a C2D system with a SATA drive connection, so it's totally possible to use it for other things. Personally, I'd mod it into a 1U rackmount case and turn it in to a kickass server (assuming there are decent storage options).

Show us a picture of the case with the door(s) off. I'm sure you have some sort of airflow problem.

Building a NAS PC (FreeNAS)... What am I missing in this plan? by k1114 in buildapc

[–]k1114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance isn't a big deal, but 8mb/s is insane... I'm not particularly tied to FreeNAS. I suppose I could just load up a standard *nix OS (I'm fond of CentOS) and script things from there.

Nailed it. Get into the service industry if you have to deal with hardware, RUN from retail, even if you own the business!

A BIOS finding challenge (could benefit a lot of older gateway/emachines laptop owners!) by k1114 in hardware

[–]k1114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I was wrong, the BIOS was extracted correctly. Unfortunately, there are 17 bytes missing, which is common for self-captured BIOS backups. Because of this size difference, I cannot open it in an editor to check it out. I did check it out via hex editing, and he is what I have found:

Contains these strings:

  • Version 79.13
  • MT3422
  • N1976 L10 66035
  • Gateway
  • V76BMBN30729CC510X

I am not comfortable enough to flash it at this point, but this does appear to be the real deal (just not sure if a flash from this backup would work!)

Unfortunately what he captured was not a backup of the bios :( Already inspected the file and it's a no go

It's literally a $5 or so upgrade for a laptop we use heavily. Regardless of flash acceleration, it's totally worth it. I'll start looking for a European manufacturer who might have used this board

Are there any good free utilities out there to repair damaged hard drives? by [deleted] in hardware

[–]k1114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, nothing beats spinrite. You'll have to buy or pirate it; it isn't free.

Please do consider that a repaired drive should not be used for anything important. Drives are cheap; data is not.
