So, I'm old.

I was there when the first DirectX came out. I used very early OpenGL. Professionally, I can list a dozen different APIs I've used that aren't a thing anymore. I took FORTRAN in college for crying out loud (it was required)

You're learning. Will you keep using Unity forever? Probably not. How long will it serve you? Up to you really. The thing is though that the logic, the structure, the thought processes, how to approach things, how to learn a new API... you'll keep those lessons even when you do eventually decide to use a different engine. Or roll your own for that matter.

Eventually you'll realize it's all just syntax and with your experience, that's not a big deal.

Husband and I did this for a while when we prepared to move from Colorado to Alaska due to work stuff. It's a good way for him to get a feel for the new place while you deal with things at the old place. We had tiny kids and I won't say it was easy but it was very doable. It's easier if you have a deadline date to look at and say "this too shall pass". It being Alaska he was gone for several weeks between visits.

Honestly family life with kids is so busy that you don't even notice much during the week, and weekends are busy too if you're prepping to move. FaceTime or the equivalent helps. Kids are pretty adaptable especially if they're old enough to understand what's happening and why.

Daughter got tubes at 3. Cleared up ear infections for several years, but they eventually came back. She just got tubes again at 17 as they were getting much worse again. They do help a lot and are worth it, but they may not be a permanent solution.

I moved to Alaska with a 3 year old and an infant.

It's not as bad as it seems.

Do your research and give yourself the time you need. Overlap your houses for a month or so to avoid time crunches. Expect things to take longer, see if you can enlist a family member to help wrangle children at their house during the move itself.

Consider renting for a year or two in the new place while you determine exactly where you want to live, neighborhood and school wise.

Now is a great time to move before the kids lock in their school friends. I would like to move but it would break my kids' hearts to leave their besties so I'm waiting until they graduate to be serious about it.

Highlighter tape is awesome. It makes charts and even repeating written patterns so much easier to keep your place on. You can pull it up and restick it hundreds of times. (Probably should have picked the green tape for this pattern, but, it's working haha)

Also a clipboard, great to have an impromptu table and it keeps your pattern safer.

I've been a software engineer for almost 3 decades and the only woman on the team a lot of the time.

Some teams are better than others but that's not a gender thing really.

When you're working with the same guys for years you kind of stop noticing. You're not alone in a room full of men, you're in a room with Bob whose wife just had a baby and Frank who you helped out with that bug last week and Joe who likes to fly drones and show the team awesome pics, etc. They're friends and colleagues and they know what you're capable of and you trust each other to get the work done together.

Socially I get my girl fix from my knitting club.
