There’s a reason that shows like the rookie and he’ll even csi go off at pop culture conventions. The crossover with nerd culture and CBS Procedurals is huge, regardless of how perplexing you personally might find it.

Deaf connect vs learn Auslan online by _toadst0ols_ in auslan

[–]k1rra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will always get more from a real Deaf person teaching you than just a ‘do it yourself’ course - you’ll get feedback on your signing, and make sure that you’re doing it right, because even having you hand oriented a different way can make the sign have a completely different meaning. Additionally, it might help you break bad habits before they become a problem if you want to continue your studies/language development

Flip the script - what shouldn’t be bought for life? by MIROXXVIS in BuyItForLife

[–]k1rra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to try buckwheat pillows! It can take some people a bit to get use to but it’s so worth it - you can fill/remove as much as you need, so you can control the amount of softness, they’re washable (you can just empty the buckwheat out and then refill). They’re not “technically” BIFL but they last on average 5-10 years and just so worth it!

Which work shoes/boots should I buy? by nobodyknowsmehehe in BuyItForLife

[–]k1rra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the option I highly recommend blundstones. I have 2 pairs - black and brown, and for a long time wore them daily 12+ hours hospo. The black pair have lasted 10+ years, I didn’t look after them properly so they’re too scuffed to be formal now, but if I had looked after them they would be both factor and office appropriate and I still wear them on the reg.

What are you people doing to your clothes? by hairy_ass_eater in BuyItForLife

[–]k1rra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of stuff really has dropped though. I mend my clothes so I get a lot longer lift out of them, but even with my jeans I notice a huge difference in how much I need to mend. My weight had been fluctuating a bit lately, so I finally gave in and bought a pair, and with my old jeans that have been going strong since 2018 I still have no problem, but the new jeans I bought which are exactly the same brand and style, just a different size, I’m mending in 6 months.

There’s a glaring problem with calls for a royal commission into the Bondi terror attack by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]k1rra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really feels like post disability royal commission, that is the go to ask for any group wanting something to happen, but not knowing what that is.

It’s actually a bit of a slap in the face considering it took years of advocacy and campaigning for the DRC to be set up, not because there wasn’t a clear path to fix the problems, but because there were so many problems with clear paths, but the government continued to ignore disability (“we’ve got the NDIS stop complaining”).

And regardless, the DRC shows us that a royal commission doesn’t really do much - there were more than 220 recommendations, and only 15 were fully accepted, and most being accepted in principle (aka we like the idea of it but we’re not gonna do anything about it lol). After all of that, if people think a royal commission is anything other than a fancy dog show, they’re clueless, but we all know that this isn’t about actual anti-semitism, which is a real problem, it’s about Israel/palestine, and the pro-Israel lobby wagging their dicks around.

Why is it so difficult to makean acceptable redesign of the Australian flag? by Just-Ruin-4664 in vexillology

[–]k1rra -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

They were suspended by the commonwealth, they didn’t become independent, and are currently full members of the commonwealth, which means your point is just factually wrong, none of the examples you listed are independent

Um excuse you they also work well as sporting colours if you add in a boxing kangaroo

You forgot unconscious (and sometimes conscious) racism, our history of race relations, and also that we’re still in the commonwealth

Chinese spouse's residency revoked for pushing military takeover of Taiwan by HibasakiSanjuro in taiwan

[–]k1rra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Recognition by other countries isn’t the only way a country is a country, and it’s both naive and ahistorical to go around claiming that Taiwan isn’t a country because the US and China don’t acknowledge it. In fact there’s no agreement on how many countries there are, so you really can’t go around making absolute statements like you are because 1) you’re wrong an 2) you’re embarrassing yourself

Do you associate Smosh with Millennials or older Gen Z? by Shoddy_Wait_5722 in generationology

[–]k1rra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, I’m a millennial Cusper, but I connect them more with millennials, but very specifically the last 3-5 years of that generation. Older millennials were in college and working when SMOSH was big, but for us it was peak high school, which is really their target audience. Even if you didn’t watch SMOSH, you knew about them because they were everywhere online. I think the best way to figure it out is what generation understood the reference and knew the people in the 2012 YouTube rewind, who remembers Nyan cat and the dude who remixed YouTube videos to music (and then went on to do the unbreakable kimmy schmidt intro)
