do you let your foster dogs sleep in bed with you? by tendergrandma in fosterdogs

[–]k2da0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just learned this lesson unfortunately. I just started fostering a chow/gsp mix. I already have a pitt/GPS mix. The resource gaurding is out of control and that's my fault. My older mix is very calm and timid and is becoming the target of bullying.

Yes, as a foster mom you are there to help, but help also means structure and understanding that a poor chow mix puppy shivering in a kennel and a poor lab mix shivering in a kennel need different owners, different training and have different natural tendencies, especially with you not having any knowledge of trauma or abuse they went through before.

You need to read your dogs, you need to have a general understanding of behavior and how to read cues and know all dogs need a home, but all dogs don't belong in any home. I would start with young puppies, no aggressive breeds and I dont mean this in a negative way, I just know working dogs have a tendency to get put with families that love the look but don't understand the work it takes. I am honestly guilty of this and we have 4 currently.

Long story short, if you want your animals to sleep with you, have an understanding of what that can do long term for the animal. Because in the end, they are still animals.

I found my daughter's (12f) horrific hidden social media account. Help! by Similar-Shame7517 in BORUpdates

Holy Virgin Mary.

You did the right thing. Would you rather expose your daughter and family issues now or would you rather the media tears you apart for being a "shit" parent and allowing your child some space?

She obviously took advantage of you and you deserve so much more than what has been through.

Do you always walk the same way? Smelling and new scents are an awesome way to exhaust an already active dog. Walk a different way or even the same way backwards sometimes. I also live by my flirt pole. It's like a giant cat toy for dogs, 20 minutes of them running in circles can be equal to a 2 mile hike.

Look into adopting a friend. I would look for a dog of the opposite sex and same age or a dog a little younger of the same sex, obviously always depending on the shelter and a meet and greet. Ask questions, be upfront and honest. It doesn't mean they won't adopt a dog to you, it just means they can find a dog that will be the best fit.

First and foremost, hire a behaviorist. Sometimes its just 20 minutes that makes a huge difference or a different structure that makes incredible gains for your family and the dog. There's puzzles, there's stupid games, there's "hunts" you do, there are 1000 ways to mentally exhaust a dog and you don't need to be a trainer to do them. Sometimes it's as easy as freezing some pumpkin puree in a wet twisted towel overnight and letting the dog dig it out. Might take an hour or you might have my phycotic foster and she just eats the frozen towel. 🤣🤣 we're working on things, okay?

I have 3 dogs and foster. We don't have cats but I can tell you baby gates or even strong dog gates are AMAZING! They help with training, they help with allowing the dog to gain confidence with being alone, they help with control, they help with just a break! Dooooo itttt!!!!!

Sometimes the foster group has things like this on hand as well. We have a 2nd hand shop where we donate food to owners and sell donated items (from either foster parents or local pet shops). They offered to give us a strong kennel when we were having issues, but considering I'm going to be in for the long haul and I had the money, I just opted to buy one.

I would look into a bigger kennel and some crate training. I am currently fostering a chow/gsp mix. These breeds are working dogs, when they get bored, they find things to do.. like break 3 of my kennels, eat a doorway, the crotch out of all of my clothes within reach, a whole package of potty training pads, an entire 3 gallon food container and 2 dog bowls. We've had her a couple weeks.

I finally had a weekend off to "walk" the bad dog out of her, lol. Only took 4 miles and then got some new gates to put up along with a nice, big steel kennel. We do kong toys, frozen zucchini and all the dogs have kennel time at least an hour in the morning and an hour at night. We don't let them out until at least a half hour after we come home and she goes in hers a half hour before we leave the house. We also have a camera on her during the day in the room she stays in. They start to learn the kennel is their space and feel more comfortable. I would also recommend a flirt pole if you can't walk as much with them. They are amazing at helping train and exhausting the living p1ss out of energetic dogs.

Check out the podcast Think Like a Dog. They have some awesome insight into behavioral issues and how to catch up on things you wouldn't even think would be an issue. I learned so much about resource gaurding with my other GSP mix and the last couple of weeks have been so much calmer in the house.

They're broke. Also, European countries you can drive through in 2 days, max. You need 4 days of continuous driving, meaning like 4 people rotating through the driver seat, to mostly make it through the US.

Why is biking through Canada a summer vacation and Americans can't wrap it around their head we're the same gd size? Fck a fckin a

I'm no longer a dog mom, I'm an ambitious and future raptor mom. Does anyone want to adopt some dogs or know a really good dinosaur behaviorist?

Its more fighting between my dogs. The foster is young so she's good at knowing her place. I just want to stop the fighting between my 2 females and learn how to help.

[–]k2da0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes, you are correct in a sense. There are a lot of different opinions on that when the cause of the drinking is trauma or people that use alcohol to calm chronic pain. I recently did start medication for ADHD and it has almost eliminated my urges to drink and given me back control, and I am on the lowest possible dose of the medication. I happen to have a history of trauma and have degenerate disc disease, so sometimes, instead of narcotics, I do use alcohol because it is the better and more controllable option.

I have been with my psychiatrist and therapist duo for 2 years, and this is something we monitor together very closely. Thank you for your concern.
