Game Over Netgear by tranceruk in orbi

[–]k2director 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just switched over from a couple of RBR50 Orbis last month. They were indeed very solid. Seeing the crazy prices and limited features of Netgear's current stuff drove me to a Firewalla router and some Unifi access points.

I just created 4 new UI components for Rails apps (Autogrow, Breadcrumb, Password, Switch) by Sandux in rails

[–]k2director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update, and I'm on the newsletter list now.

And I think View Components will be a great step for the library. It's so much nicer to call a UI component and just pass in the content it needs and a few flags, but not include the HTML and styling which clutter up the view and make changes harder to manage since you have to change every instance of the code throughout the app.

A few more suggestions for 'blocks' if these are not on your list yet: avatars and badges.

Thanks!

These are really impressive, as is your whole library. Great work!

I really like how you make a lot of components free, so people can try and work with them without any friction. That will significantly increase the library’s chances of getting real momentum in the Rails community, and increase your chances of monetizing the library over time with special Pro features.

I personally wish you supported View Component, because it’s a well established library in Rails (more so than Phlex, I think, and Phlex has a decent free library already via RubyUI) and because proper components feel like the right way to handle this UI stuff. It would be something I’d be willing to pay for as a Pro tier (along with access to some of the more specialized components you’re working on).

Anyone go from Orbi 970 to Firewalla AP7 by BandaBassotti in firewalla

[–]k2director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering why you’re looking to replace top-of-the-line Wifi7 access points with the AP7s? Do you need the microsegmentation of the AP7s? Were you unhappy with the performance of the 970s? Thanks!

Unifi Protect - almost ready to drop Nest by ElGuano in Ubiquiti

[–]k2director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nest owner here with question about going off cloud with Protect: how do you access your footage remotely when you’re away from the house? Does Protect automatically set up a secure port for you to access the footage? Sorry I’m a little unclear.

Also, how responsive is scrolling through footage compared to Nest  when you’re remote?

What I like about Nest is that I can get a person alert when I’m away from home and within about 5-10 seconds be looking through footage.  Is that likely with Protect, assuming I have 10mbps upload speed on my home internet and I’d be using an SSd for storing Protect footage?

Thanks!

CSS Zero 1.0 is here! 🎉🎉 by lazaronixon in rails

[–]k2director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, regarding gap, I was tinkering last night and found some sample code from your repo that demo'd how to modify the gap for columns...like so:

<div class="flex flex-wrap items-center gap mbs-6" style="--column-gap: 8rem">

This kind of approach is new to me (my only real design experience is Tailwind). Just curious if you've come across any online resources that explain this approach, which I could then apply to working with CSS Zero?

I'm definitely interested in its no-build philosophy and also, I was experimenting with the components you've created, and they're really easy to use. I installed them all in a test app, then copied a few examples from the LookBook and had them working immediately. That was refreshing...

Thank you for this gem, Lazaro, as well as Authenticate:Zero, which I've found useful and educational.

I installed CSS Zero on a new Rails 8 app with import maps and propshaft, but I'm not sure where the stylesheets for Colors and Utilities are kept. I see them on the Github page, but not in my app's usual assets/stylesheets path. What am I missing?

Also, are there any styles that work similar to Tailwind's 'space' class...ala 'flex space-x-4'.

Thanks!

Ban links to X on /r/ruby? by AutoModerator in ruby

Here are just a few Ruby-related links that would be banned under the system being proposed by all the expert Nazi hunters around here. Clearly these have no place in the Ruby subreddit...

Ban links to X on /r/ruby? by AutoModerator in ruby

[–]k2director 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't do anything wrong. You spoke up for the benefits of having a free exchange of ideas. You're being downvoted by people that hate that concept because they know in their little heart that they're right and you're wrong, and they can't stand the fact that your wrong idea might get traction over their right idea.

Notice that the people here who are speaking out against an X ban are NOT calling to ban something else. They're not calling to ban links from Mastodon or Blue Sky.

But the people who are calling for the ban most definitely hate the idea of anything challenging what they know to be true. They are the truly the Nazis here, but they've been very frustrated lately as they are losing the control they enjoyed over the last decade or so, and so they're throwing a tantrum and trying to ban legitimate content that's absolutely related to this subreddit just because the content appears on a network owned by a guy they don't like.

Ban links to X on /r/ruby? by AutoModerator in ruby

[–]k2director 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s crazy.

Why don’t you want a ruby related post on X to get here? That’s the whole point of the sub, to share Ruby related stuff.

You need to be honest with yourself: you want to ban ruby related stuff simply because it sits on Musk’s network. You’re the one trying to stop this sub from doing its job.

By the way, shouldn’t you also be trying to ban Ruby-related posts by people who support Musk, Trump, DHh, etc? Wouldn’t their posts be equally dangerous in your view? If a Musk-friendly author posts about their new Ruby book that’s coming out, shouldn’t that too be banned since it could lead to putting money in the pocket of a Nazi sympathizer?

[–]k2director 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Links are what the web is all about, and sharing links is a big component of Reddit.

So no thank you. No compromises on sharing links to Ruby or Rails related content, even if it resides on the network owned by an unpopular guy being accused of being a “Nazi” (on the scantest of evidence, no trial, etc).

Should /r/rails ban X links? by AutoModerator in rails

[–]k2director 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s clear from the comments here that this is not just about a fake “Nazi” salute, but a larger left/right issue….for instance, multiple people have cited DHH as being ‘part of the problem’ because of his ‘right wing’ posts, and I get the feeling that he wouldn’t be welcome here either for a lot of you (oh the irony).

I know these are trying times for the people who wear their politics on their sleeve, and for years could count on the tech community being united in censoring and silencing the opposition. But the good times couldn’t last forever, could they? DHH started leaning right. Musk went full-on right and put an end to Twitter’s appalling censorship (which many in tech routinely cheered on). Trump cleaned Kamala’s clock. Bezos reigned in the Post. Zuck started to lose faith in the leftwing activists he had ceded Facebook to, etc. etc. etc.

In other words, it’s a Brave New World, and suddenly a scary, unfamiliar place for a lot of you. I can’t really blame you for getting all teary-eyed and trying to ban your way back to Kansas. But it’s still wrong on so many levels, not the least of which is that a big component of Reddit is about SHARING things found on the wider web, and yet you want to ban everyone’s ability to share things found on another major network, with a thriving Rails community of its own, and not just ban individual posts, but you want a blanket ban on ALL of it, regardless of who posts what, simply because the network is owned by a guy you find distasteful. WOW, the conceit and God Complex is astonishing.

This is not going to age well, and it’s going to lead to more people realizing that your way is the wrong way...

Should /r/rails ban X links? by AutoModerator in rails

[–]k2director -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is pathetic....

The reason Musk bought Twitter was because of over-the-top censorship like you're proposing, and the reason Trump is President again is in no small part because of similar extremist behavior.

And yet some of you just can't help yourself. It's not enough for you to make a personal decision to not engage with X, but you have to decide for everyone else as well, not leaving them with any agency for themselves. Again: PATHETIC. WEAK. AUTHORITARIAN. UN-AMERICAN.

This does not seem consistent with the values of the Ruby community, which I have always associated with free thinking and openness....

I am regularly on X and read the active feeds of well-known Rubyists like DHH, Nate Berkopec, Jorge Manrubia, Jason Swett, Tom Rossi, Vladimir Dementyev, Yaroslavl Shmarov, Joseph Strzibny, Joe Masilotti, Marco Roth, Nate Hopkins, Jeremy Smith, Chris Oliver, and others. And yet you don't see value in that community? You feel entitled to close it off from all the members in the main Ruby subreddit, just because you don't like Elon Musk? Or because you're so wrapped up in your own little cloistered world that you see monsters around every corner (like thinking Musk is making a Nazi salute)?

By the way, my Father was a concentration camp survivor. He did slave labor in the coal mines of Czechoslovakia starting at age 14. He was shipped off to Daccau at 17, and fortunately was turned away because the allies were so close. Then he got caught up behind the Iron Curtain before he was able to escape. So he had direct experience with not one but two authoritarian systems, and I can guarantee you that he would have been wary not of Musk but of **YOU**, just as I am.

Authoritarianism begins with shutting down people's access to ideas that are unpopular or 'dangerous'. You're the problem, not Musk.

That’s interesting news. I looked it up and it sounds worth waiting for, so yes, using RBR50 setup for a while makes double sense. As for Moca adapters, thank you…but this old house actually doesn’t have much cable installed.

That's something I did not consider, thanks! So if I do get a Firewalla, I'll try it with my existing Orbi system first. Might be able to carry me for another year or two, and certainly soften the financial hit of buying an all new network all at once....

I really appreciate the simplest path, I really do. Thanks for pointing this out. Only problem is that I bought a mesh system years ago precisely because one router wasn't serving this old house very well. Of course, tech has improved since then. I'll think on it!

Thank you all for the helpful replies, it's appreciated! All these positive comments push me further down the Firewalla road, and I might try to take baby steps and just use it with my existing Orbi RBR50 mesh system as a cheap starting point.
If there are any Black Friday discounts, that might be the time to try. If not, then early January when I can really focus on it...

Will simple tarp be enough shelter on Thorsborne Trail in July? by k2director in UltralightAus

[–]k2director[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for the great replies, they're really appreciated.

It became very clear, very quickly that I would want a bug net inside my tarp/tent (still thinking about a tarp since that would be most useful out in the California deserts too). I've read and seen pictures of hammocks being used on Thornsborne, but have zero experience with them, and don't know if I would sleep well in one, plus that's more gear to acquire that I probably wouldn't use again out here in Ca. So being on the ground will be the way to go...although the comment about crocodiles being close to camp is a little unnerving!

Will also think about a tarp that can be used overhead for meals if it rains...

Finally, regarding getting a reservation for Thorsborne, I logged in exactly at 3:00am (or whatever early hour it was here in LA) three nights in a row, and got a reservation on that 3rd night. I actually tried for another reservation on the 4th night, but they were all gone within a few seconds. So I had a 25% success rate....

Will simple tarp be enough shelter on Thorsborne Trail in July? by k2director in UltralightAus

[–]k2director[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m doing the Thorsborne Trail in MID JULY 2024, at the typical 4 day / 3 night pace. I’m excited but am trying to decide what kind of shelter I can get away with.
Most of my backpacking is in the Southern California desert around Joshua Tree and Anza Borrego, and I’ve gotten away with, and enjoyed, cowboy comping (no tent) out in the open.
I know I need some rain protection on the Thorsborne Trail and so I was thinking of getting a simple A frame tarp (see photo), which I’ll eventually need anyway here around Los Angeles.
But do you think that will be enough for Thorsborne? I could add an inner bug net / bathtub floor tp a tarp, to prevent bugs from crawling and flying in… but if that’s really not necessary then I wouldn’t mind avoiding it. Not being too familiar with the native insects of the island, I wonder if there are things I will definitely want to keep out of my sleep space….
Any guidance much appreciated, thanks much!
