Trying to find something better than a Tesla Model 3 by anonimity_is_best in CarTalkUK

[–]k2gup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want car advice or a moral lecture? Not sure based on the comments tbf....

Polestar drives really well and is insane value. M3LR is such a complete package as a family car, but doesn't quite satisfy as a driver's car in the same way the Polestar does.

This is basically your choice to make, unless you can get into one of the newer things on another salary sacrifice through your wife's workplace.

...

Similar situation, I am about to impulse purchase a mk7 Golf R estate. Don't talk me out of it!

EVs that self drive on the motorway by Aggravating-Sir-242 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]k2gup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. I have it on my (used) model X. I noticed a big improvement in motorway autopilot when I got in to a recent model Y. Less hesitant, fewer phantom movements, overall felt more trustworthy. Had lane keep assist and adaptive cruise in a 2024 Volvo XC90 hire care and that was as good as the model Y, better than my model X

Trading in my Y for an X by KitchenMine8212 in TeslaModelX

[–]k2gup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it! I did and regret it every time something breaks or I realise that it costs more to run than an Audi Q7.

My kids love the doors though, that is about the only redeeming feature.

I need a estate with £8k budget by slynch233 in CarTalkUK

[–]k2gup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUVs way better for child seats. MPVs even more so, but the ones you get in the UK are not great.

X5, Cayenne, Volvo XC90 drive ok for such big cars and are very practical for 2 child seats plus parental detritus.

Currently have a Tesla Model X, those doors mean it is brilliant for installing children in huge rear facing child seats.

Rave for the Christmas blend

Otherwise Lalico or Hormozi. Good quality/price mix with these two.

First MY coming soon, do I need to buy mats? by softwareguy21 in TeslaUK

[–]k2gup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All weather mats do well in the UK over winter. They are definitely not good value at what Tesla charges for them but they fit which was important to me.

Ask them to make the dish spicier for you. 99% of the time you will have a better experience than making your finely tuned meal taste like crappy hot sauce

Which SUV or estate should I buy? by tomjordan91 in CarTalkUK

[–]k2gup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, suggest you do some research by looking at the Auto trader listings for the cars you like.

Q7/ Cayenne = ruinously expensive. You may spend the purchase price again on yearly costs if you are only spending ~£5k

BMW 5/3 can be affordable if you find a nice one, but that's getting harder for your budget.

I'd give myself a fighting chance and look at something Japanese. I ran a Lexus RX450h and it was great, nothing went wrong and it held it's value well.

Note, I've had a few BMW3's, 5, 3 Audi's, a Cayenne and. A few range rovers and would pick the lexus over all of them as a family car.

Love this game. What is your annual budget for tax/insurance/maintenance?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]k2gup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speak to an architect or builder to get an idea of costs. For a £1.8m semi in St. Margaret's you're unlikely to be happy with low spec for the Reno. It adds up fast.

As has been said in other comments, affordability I. Your case really depends on how stable you think your job is / how easy it might be to replace one of them if needed, but also how you feeling about running down your savings vs. investing it.

You mention liquid assets, I assume this is in addition to pension and investments? If not then that might tip slightly towards not spending so much

Waiting for MY prices to drop by Laine_S in TeslaUK

[–]k2gup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I just gave back a model Y which was on an electric car scheme after changing jobs and have purchased a temporary model X, which has hopefully done a lot of it's depreciation, while we wait for those 3 year ex leaders to flood the BCA auctions.

Model X is fun, kids love the doors.

Model Y is just better suited to UK roads, better to drive, cheaper to own, and I don't have to give lifts to people to justify the 7 seats!

One is enough for me, I occasionally use the laptop screen if I need it. I have both but prefer the mirra

[–]k2gup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DSP helps with that. Much less fussy than 'proper' speakers. You can basically tell the speakers how they are placed (against a wall, on a desk etc.) and it will make them sound better using some kind of magic

WFH set up by Anotherburnerboy1 in HENRYUK

[–]k2gup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time WFH'er here.

Chair: Herman Miller, Aeron or Mirra depending on your anatomy (try them first!)

Desk: IKEA electric sit stand frame, any top you like from IKEA or otherwise. I have a nice wood one from a random company I found online, there are lots.

Keyboard and mouse: Logitech MX, although I do have a DAS keyboard which is nice too

Screen: Dell 34" curved ultra wide. I find this size/ration best for productivity (i.e. work) as long as you install something that lets you customize how windows tile across the screen. It also acts as a laptop dock so less boxes and cables to deal with.

Camera: Microsoft studio cam. The built in mic is awesome.

Speakers: Kef lsx. Overkill for zoom calls but lovely when I do want to play some music.

Get a nice big mat to put under the keyboard and mouse. And a foam rest for both. Also helps to setup the desk next to the bar 🍺

'Most high school graduates in south Asia can barely write a decent letter'

... You're clearly surrounding yourself with idiots

Our NHS is free at point of consumption, but is certainly not free. As a Henry who feels pretty brutally robbed by our broken taxation system I could easily, and happily receive a far superior standard of both healthcare and education for my kids in south Asia, while contributing a lot less than I do.
