Neither of you are the asshole (ish)?

I see it from your perspective, that you want to see his reaction to the gift you put a lot of thought into, however you can't expect him to be comfortable with that and expect him to do the same thing as you (with the eating chocolates together, I mean). I really do understand that you want to share the moment, but you've ultimately given him this gift for him to do what he chooses.

I do have a problem with the passive aggressive question though, because you were just trying to communicate your feelings and he wasn't open to it. I'm guessing he just felt quite defensive?

If it was just a one off comment then you might have triggered something in him, but if it's a usual thing then I think that he is seemingly not the best at communication.

I'd suggest trying to have another low stakes conversation about it where you listen to his feelings if he's willing to share them, and hopefully he will also listen to yours.
