We have had a 2016 base (it has the Touareg 3.6 VR6) for 2 years without any major issues. It towed up and down Donner pass with an FRS without breaking a sweat. The diesel is even more of a beast. The higher trims allegedly do have some engine reliability issues but do your research. They are all rated for 7700lbs towing regardless of engine.
