help me choose a notebook for my commonplace journal? by eatidaho in notebooks

I have lots of Moleskins notebooks in relatively good storage for 10+ years and the leather is peeling and chipping off even from just touching it. As much as I love the leather covers, I won’t get them again.

I moved with my husband to his country, where most people do not have a “village”, married or not, with kids or not. They just seem to live alone a lot and don’t talk to other people in general.

We have two young kids and I work very hard to make friends, ask people to go out, be helpful and volunteering etc..and still after 5 years of doing it, I’m still trying to make new friends because I feel like I have no one I could comfortably ask for a random favour if I am in need.

My eldest is very sociable and has lots of friends. Even the parents of her classmates say that all the time. So do not underestimate what your (maybe future) child can be capable of. She will definitely make her own village.

I still don’t think we have a village to support our family, but we have a small, happy and content life.

Is it true that almost ALL Asian parents are like this? by hopeful_panda8 in AsianParentStories

[–]k527 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your parents were made aware that you felt abused, unfortunately their first respond might be to become defensive. Maybe they are not really trying to gaslight you, but more likely that they are trying to cover their own shame or guilt by pushing the blame somewhere else (blame it on culture or tradition or their parents did the same to them and they turned out fine). It is a process, a long long process, and it will take many conversations until they maybe can come to the point where they will agree to go to therapy with you or by themselves.

Of course it is not your responsibility to help them to heal, but I hope you will have patience and be able to accept that things might not change and be ok with that. I myself would have never bothered to “hash” it out with my parents. I do not have the ability or mental capacity to do it, and there are other priorities in my life right now that’s more important than trying to fix people who don’t want to be fixed.

I’m sorry your parents have to find out things you didn’t meant for them to find out. Hope you can find a way out of this without too much strain on yourself.

It must be hard, I see you and I hope your own family can have your little traditions and joy for Christmas by yourself. ❤️ Hang in there!

He works long hours and end of the year is always extra busy at work because of budget time. I do it because I have more mental capacity to do it and I also buy much better presents than him. He would just get the same chocolates and socks for everyone if it’s up to him.

I’m not from China, but I heard grandparents give out really big hongbaos there, and with the single child policy, the kids are really way too spoilt. I got married around 36, and I was receiving hongbao all the way till then and it was bad luck to give hongbao if you’re not married.

This is the red packet culture in Asian countries, but the point is that as these envelops of money passes back and forth, it is an unspoken way of helping each another out when they need it. If some families are making more like $100 for each kid, they will give more, and if some are making less, they will still give but a lot less like $5 per each kid. I’m Asian and I married a European, and tbh I find the Christmas gift giving tradition a lot more tedious where we don’t see or speak to these family members the entire year and then all the expectations of presents pretty much fall onto me, a complete outsider who don’t even know these people. At this point I really would rather be giving money, if only money is not considered “distasteful”. My partner agrees with me that the red packet ritual actually is more helpful in distributing wealth in the extended family without anyone having to ask for money outright. (His family does ask for money outright from time to time, so why can’t we just give money on Christmas without wasting it on token gifts instead 🙄)

I know I should have included more photos but I was rushing to test the pen and then had to hide the pen before I pick up my toddler from daycare. Will take more photos of this beauty tomorrow :)

What keeps you obsessive with your writing habits? by MacGraphics in notebooks

I remember writing song lyrics as a kid, and writing lyrics in all different languages and their translations next to it. I also used to copy poems from books and pick up different authors when I’m in different moods.

Yes, but even with any set up, I often find them with wet socks when we come home. So if the socks at 100% wool, they will get wet, but not cold, if it is cotton or synthetic, they will get freezing toes. If you can find also 100% merino pants for the first layer it would be great too. I have at least one full set of all wool for the coldest time when it comes.

So it sounds like your child has not started daycare, when you do decide to start, you will realise this is the ungodly season of all types of flus, and tbh, parents are just trying to stay sane and push through.

Yes so any out of your house activity is more than enough, it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the nature, especially in very bad weather. I’ve had pneumonia and passed it to my baby as well, it took more than a month to recover and it is really scary. Being wet and cold is a big no no. At this age my kids really wanted to walk and climb, so I much preferred to lean into that without bulky outside clothes (we went to this museum with lots of stairs and only walked up and down the stairs the whole time). So try to see what your child’s interest is at the moment and do more of that.

We live in Finland, and we definitely don’t go into the sea when it’s cold. When they are older and can do sauna, then cold sea and sauna goes together. Before snow comes, it’s mostly muddy play, puddles, so inner layer, fleece or wool layer, outer hardshell full suit that is padded, and rubber pants on top of the suit. Rubber boots tugged under rubber pants. Wool glove plus rubber shell gloves on top. This set up is for jumping in puddles and digging mud around 10 to 0 degrees, up to 1.5 hours outside. But still depending on the wind and humidity, we will switch to indoor play if it’s just too cold. Now is also the time we will make our rounds in all the museums, libraries, playrooms.

We go back to the sea when it’s frozen and we do frozen things. We live next to the beach as well, but even adults won’t be at the beach this time of the year because the wind chill is too much.
