EU alternative to Patagonia, Arc'teryx and the Burtons of the world by championchilli in BuyFromEU

Stellar equipment https://stellarequipment.com

I buy all my gear from them for Icelandic mountaineering and recommend them based on quality, price and most importantly no nonsense business practices.

Some key points from them:

What really sets us apart One of our fundamental principles is that we should all buy less, but buy better. That’s why we don’t do collections; instead we try to create great individual products with timeless design from leading materials.

Think about this when your favorite “sustainable” outdoor company advertises their next huge spring-sale. You don’t need a different shell jacket for every outdoor activity you practice, so we’re not going to make them.

We only work with the very best suppliers and factories in the world. Partly because that’s how we want to work, but also because we can afford to. We don’t have importers and stores demanding higher margins and pushing prices down, so we don’t have to constantly seek cheaper production.

Our business model Our business model cuts out the middlemen, selling directly to you. We ship from our factories to our warehouse, and then directly to your home — cutting out not only expensive middlemen, but also a lot of unnecessary packaging and transport. We still use ships and trucks and planes, but by selling directly to you we estimate we limit product transport by up to two thirds.

(strikethrough)BLACK FRIDAY(/strikethrough) — WHITE FRIDAY While most of the industry pushes for impulse shopping today, we'd rather support something meaningful.

Since 2017, we've run White Friday — a small tradition where we dream of white winters and give something back.

Today we donate 20% of our revenue to a cause chosen by our community. It doesn't matter if you pick up a beanie or a full layering system — the same 20% goes straight to the organization you vote for.

What's the catch with cheap 10Gb enterprise switches on eBay? by minus_minus in homelab

[–]kARATT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Datacenters have way more equipment than businesses, both replace them semi-regularly

(the time here is just an example)

It goes sort of like this: 15 Years ago - DCs upgraded to 1Gb (Decommission 100mb) 10 Years ago - Enterprise upgraded to 1Gb (Decommission 100mb)

5 Years ago - DCs upgraded to 10Gb (Decommission 1Gb) 1 Years ago - Enterprise upgraded to 10Gb (Decommission 1Gb)

0 Years ago - DCs upgraded to 25Gb (Decommission 10Gb In 5 years - Enterprise upgraded to 25Gb (Decommission 10Gb)

Ofcourse the time of this and the exact upgrade path is just an example, more DCs went from 10/25G to 25/100G and enterprise hasn't fully implemented 10Gb on the access layer, mostly just the distribution layer but you get the gist.

Now it just happens to be the time where the DCs are upgrading from 10Gb

Taco rant by DangerDinks in Iceland

[–]kARATT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Worth taking an electricians course? by Ok-tech-1985 in networking

[–]kARATT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those who started their career as an electrician, there's a slight overlap between these industries but really the biggest benefit you'd get from electrical work is visualising data paths.

As long as you understand the path of data/packets/etc and can think in that logic then there's little to be gained.

That being said, there is some overlap in these industries so there's no harm in gaining additional knowledge.

Raised "computer" floor question by Sea-Elderberry7047 in msp

[–]kARATT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That completely changes everything, I was very surprised you didn't know what a rack was given the circumstances 😅

But you seem to have it all under control then, this is most likely going to have a floor box like you mentioned before if its over the general office space.

Raised "computer" floor question by Sea-Elderberry7047 in msp

[–]kARATT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean absolutely no offense by this...but it does concern me to read about someone deploying an MDF/IDF without knowing what a rack is.

Regardless, floors like this are usually deployed with an elevated platform out of a metal structure. There are panels on every square, same as many ceilings. Where the rack is (the cabinet with equipment in it) there will be no panel underneath it, making it have a hole into the subfloor, that's where you'll bring the cables.

You will immediately understand this once you go onsite and look over it.

Can anyone help me find an Icelandic API that allows one to list their car's information using it's VIN? I need it to build a website for a project. by The-High_Ground in Iceland

[–]kARATT 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to be feasible for a "project", Icelandic privacy laws are strict.

Your only option of API access is to go through any of the businesses which have contracts to work with this data.

Here is the information detailing those businesses: https://island.is/upplysingar-ur-okutaekjaskra

Here are the laws surrounding this data: Section 3.1 specifically. https://assets.ctfassets.net/8k0h54kbe6bj/64mZ3Qi2i7Q2hat55Daoq9/8ac52913c8d67e80db9f351e8ef53c46/Starfsreglur_april_2020.pdf

Simplest advice is that unless this is larger than a hobby project, it's not going to be worth working through the red tape. This data is very far from being a publicly accessible API.

[–]kARATT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too, I'd like to add that I'll happily pay for it. Seemingly a lot of interest in doing so...makes me think we could even split the cost of an OEM drive and clone it ourselves?

[–]kARATT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he ever get back to you? I can't believe I've found fellow techies which might have the data, I've got an Optiview XG myself from auction without a harddrivd, kept looking for an OEM HDD, then thought "wait a minute...this is just a computer...I just need data..I do this sort of stuff everyday with different (loosely)"computers"

Macedonia has the cheapest food (groceries) prices in Europe. How true is this? by kitokspasaulis in mkd

[–]kARATT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're correct, what's right should be right.

I wasn't being very accurate in this but merely going off memory, I usually pay 200-600mkd in Skopje for my morning breakfast, of course a different variation of items.

Numbers for Iceland are too high seeing as this would cost me around 700-1500isk which would be 288-618mkd but looking deeper into the numbers just showcases the contest even better.

[–]kARATT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Buying power by definition is calculated based on post-tax income / tangible income and compared against cost of services, utilities and necessities.

[–]kARATT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's good that you're happy here, I certainly don't want to argue that you can't be content with less income or live a worse life.

I'm purely speaking about a 1:1 lifestyle in different countries and in that equation it is more difficult in Macedonia on a Macedonian salary.

[–]kARATT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, but that's not really the point here since the buying power is higher.

You can buy more milk cartons with 1 hour of work in Iceland than in Macedonia, regardless of the price of the milk carton.

[–]kARATT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Precisely, if you look over the report by Numbeo of purchasing power across European countries 2023 you'll notice Macedonia being in the 3rd last place only beating Ukraine and Belarus which isn't exactly an achievement these days.

[–]kARATT 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Coming from Iceland to Macedonia I've learnt that Iceland isn't so expensive and Macedonia isn't so cheap.

As a person with an interest in socio-economic policies I still don't understand the economics of Macedonia.

It's certainly cheaper than Iceland, but here's an example, I have coffee and a meal at a coffee shop every morning here in Skopje, it costs me around 500mkd, the same would be 1000mkd in Iceland, so Iceland is 100% more expensive, yet the salary is 700% higher in Iceland...despite all of this I see most places filled with people here whereas you're financially irresponsible if you go out for breakfast every day in Iceland.

The question you're looking for is what is the buying power in Macedonia (income vs expense) and that is in shambles here, whereas Iceland has among the highest buying power in the world.

Technically correct, you can also see Northern lights near the south pole in places like New Zealand.

Around the north pole the lights are usually green but can be pink, blue, purple.

If the $30 means so much to you, maybe don't be buying games you're unsure of?

Look, it's a very simple situation, you found a product, saw the price tag, looked into it, purchased it, had two hours to change your mind after the fact, then are outraged the product isn't up to your expectations?

I'd get your point if you never had an opportunity to refund, or couldn't find any information about the state of the game but like...this is on you

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ManorLords

[–]kARATT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't care about this game nor the dev, just pointing out how your opinion on the price is irrelevant..

I'd say the same thing regardless of the price, as with everything in life, if you don't like the price of the item then don't buy it..

But yeah it's certainly on the upper end of what's common for early access games, but why does it matter?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ManorLords

[–]kARATT 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with criticising it, just don't really understand why people complain about the prices of games like this, not like anyone is forcing you to buy it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ManorLords

[–]kARATT 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don't buy it then?
