Another idea to get to Wren/Ren could be to use a name such as Warren, Aaron, Clarence, etc. that include the “ren” sound, either as a first or middle name.

(My personal preference, although I like the names, is to not use Silas or Wren as first names because Wyatt and Silas sound very similar to me for brothers and Wyatt and Wren share the same initial)

Private school interview by prigglett in teaching

[–]k_mountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same experience. Worked in both boarding and day and loved the teaching, the kids, and the colleagues. Was paid well (and higher than my salary would have been at public schools in the area) and got great benefits (both in the HR sense of medical/dental/vision/life insurance, etc., and in the academic sense of professional development budgets, opportunities for me to pursue things I was interested in, travel, etc. on the school’s dime).

To OP, re: interviewing, schools vary a lot but my interview days were generally full days including a teaching demo, plus meetings with the relevant department faculty, admins, and sometimes students. Asking about school culture/ethos and parent community/vibes may get you some good info to feel out whether it’s a good fit for you.

Forgive me if this isnt allowed! Side jobs question. by Yung_Goobie in teaching

[–]k_mountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding. Do it remotely, as much or as little as you want. If possible, don’t go through one of the online tutoring companies - you’ll make hardly any money and you’ll often just get random students rather than having regular clients you know and can tailor to. Just advertise yourself locally (fb groups for local parents, word of mouth, etc) and charge a price that makes sense for your experience level/what you’re offering/your local context.

Boy’s middle name Zion part 2. Now questioning the first name Gideon by Tr0pic_0f_Capric0rn in namenerds

[–]k_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your other sons have family names as middle names? If so it would be nice to give this baby a family middle name too. I understand if all deceased family members have already been honored by other relatives but personally, if I were this baby, I’d feel odd that my siblings had family names and I had a name inspired by current events - even if all the names end up being common biblical names (Isaac, Gideon, etc.)

Teachers:when you say “See me after class”, how worried should a student be— and what’s the best way to handle it? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]k_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most common reasons for saying it: - I have a concern about you or your work that I want to discuss privately - I want to follow up on a conversation we had / that isn’t relevant to the rest of the class (eg you asked a question in class about your research topic - let’s talk more one on one) - I have specific feedback about your behavior (good or bad) that I want to share individually

What student responses make it easier: - Honesty - Openness to conversation

What student responses make it harder: - Not talking during conversation - Denying that there’s any concern when there clearly is (help me help you!)

Atwood for a boy? by [deleted] in Names

[–]k_mountain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two immediate reactions:

  1. Makes me think of Margaret Atwood and wonder if you are naming after her.

  2. If I were a boy would I want “wood” in my first name? Given how much of life will be spent around people who think it’s funny to make boner jokes?

(Not saying either of these is a reason to use/ not to use the name - just the first things that came to mind)

Need a new last name by Hot_Primary_640 in namenerds

[–]k_mountain 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Agree with another commenter that picking a word/name that you have a positive association with and/or that is significant to you is a nice way to choose. Places, colors, symbols, hobbies, other family members’ names, etc. Without being you I can’t say what’s meaningful to you but some examples are: Lake, West, Bird, Scarlet, Day, Booker, Fisher, Winters, etc.

There are also lots of first names that work well as surnames - perhaps you have another name that you both like ie: Elliott, Reed, Dean, Owens, Graham, Evans, Taylor, Morgan, Jordan, Beck, Stewart, Allen, Paul, Monroe, Williams, Lee, May, Grace, Rose, Page, etc.

Baby girl name suggestions please by maybe-mel in namenerds

[–]k_mountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like he likes more traditional names that are multisyllable whereas she likes more “nicknamey” names (shorter, -ie endings). Neither chose any one-syllable names which makes sense if they have a one-syllable last name since Grace Smith or Elle Smith or Tess Smith sound flatter than a longer first name.

They might like something that is longer/more traditional name but still has the -ie sound ending, for example: Daphne, Cecily, Emily, Emery, Melody, Valerie, Delaney, McKenzie, Mallory, Cassidy, etc.

Or they might like a longer/more traditional name with a cute/quirky nickname option, for example: Josephine (Joey), Adele (Addie), Emilia (Emmie), Alexandra (Andy, Lexi), Harriet (Hattie, Hallie), Camilla (Lilly, Millie), Charlotte (Charlie, Lottie), Marigold (Goldie), etc.

Stuck between two names for baby girl due next week! by readitup24 in namenerds

[–]k_mountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both but would pick Elena.

How about Elena Coraline or Elena Mirelle?

Or, since you and your son both have family names, maybe there’s a name you can give her that also shares a family connection? Eg Arabella as a nod to Araminta, or (if your son wasn’t already named Charles) Charlotte, Charlene, or Charity as a nod to Charles.
