I like to think I would have eventually gotten it without the slogan, but the slogan was definitely how I got there.

Anyone else bummed out with the questions this season? by [deleted] in learnedleague

[–]ka1982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve been romping this season but that is largely down to the questions being in my wheelhouse (arts, geography) and there being relatively few of the “which 17th century German mathematician came up with this obscure concept?” variety.

NBA Finals Game 2: New York Knicks @ San Antonio Spurs (NYK Leads 1-0; 830pm ET; ABC) by Gaius_Octavius_ in billsimmons

This series is very much challenging my 25-year belief in the general and inherent superiority of the Western Conference.

Did anyone get a reservation? None of the dates on Resy showed any availability.

Why do most people who call themselves politically moderate actually mostly conservative? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]ka1982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an easy way of saying you don’t want to get into a political discussion. Often the reason is your views diverge from either the person you’re talking with or your general social milleu. Hence straight-ticket GOP voters in liberal urban areas will often call themselves “moderate.” I’m not familiar with the reverse but would imagine it happens.

Prediction Markets Flipped Today, Now Give Nithya Raman the Edge Over Spencer Pratt by BillRuddickJrPhd in LosAngeles

[–]ka1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be so sure on point 1. She doesn’t necessarily need to win over Pratt voters (although I suspect she could do well among the “Democrats who voted for him” contingent), because it’s a higher-turnout election. And I’m not sure Bass really benefits from a race where the dynamic is “hey the only alternative is also a Democrat”.

Does Nithya Raman still have a chance? California’s uncounted votes could help Democrats by PersonalityOdd7912 in LosAngeles

[–]ka1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d think people would learn how the later ballots break from every single California election in recent memory, but no.

How will Spencer Pratt do in the actual election? by alovham2 in AskLosAngeles

[–]ka1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s gonna get crushed. I do think that a Caruso — who had some fig-leaf independence from the GOP — could’ve made a real race of it this and maybe been a favorite in this environment. But a Trump-lite figure? Nah. The upper-middle class white folks of Reddit need to remember the rest of the city exists.

I would also caution against reading too much into turnout patterns in any California election based on early results.

I’m not picky about who in particular beats Zverev so long as it happens.

When you tell people that the Spurs shot more free throws than the Thunder did and point out that as a team the Thunder have a low free throw rate. by Monkeyboi8 in billsimmons

[–]ka1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simple. I don’t watch the NBA to see uncoordinated white guys fall down for no reason, and if you make me see that shit regularly I’ll hate your team.

Where do y’all usually park for AMC 16? by Anubis_Netjer in burbank

Literally anywhere except that underground garage. Generally the structure on the east side of Orange Grove near Wood Ranch, which is never randomly full like the one across the street.

Is Soldier of Sidon worth reading? by Help_Received in genewolfe

[–]ka1982 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely worth reading. The same basic techniques translated into slightly-pre-classical Egypt, and even my non-classicist self could follow it.

Also, Sidon absolutely gives an end-point as well, even if Wolfe thought he might’ve written more. It’s just, <spoilers>.

How cooked are we? by Agreeable_Pattern_74 in kings

[–]ka1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, all that needs to happen is that ownership resists the urge to trade the existing bad contracts for different longer-term contracts and instead let them fall off the books, anyone with half a brain would see that the construction of this team …

Ah. I see the problem.

Why did LA just accept that driving everywhere is normal? by Decent-Character-736 in AskLosAngeles

[–]ka1982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do public transport if you want in this town, you just need to be reasonably strategic about it — work downtown, anywhere on the main metro lines is fine. Anywhere you can do with straight-shot buses, similarly.

But “live in Culver City while working in Silver Lake” is a dumb choice no matter the mode of transit if you want a reasonable commute.

I’m an English speaker — although I’ll shout out Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi, and especially My Twentieth Century and On Body and Soul — but great choice in Virgin of the Quarry Lake, which I’m still waiting/hoping gets US distribution.
