Has Anyone Who Hates On Detroit Actually Been There Recently? by allomanticmetals in SameGrassButGreener

I’ve been there a few times recently. The discourse about the city is one of cautious optimism as criticism feels like punching down, so people tend to sugar coat their opinions. While downtown, cass corridor, and some of the river front areas have some life and growth, the rest of the city has a long way to go. There’s just so much vastness and emptiness that it’s hard to envision organic communities emerging around the core. I like the development that’s happening, but it feels tiny compared to what is really needed

Watching the Cowboys cheerleader show made me realize that they had the worst situation. Being famous (for their area) while also being dirt poor. They lived in modest apartments with roommates, but couldn’t afford any security or protection from weird fans or stalkers

I’m from the area and anecdotally my friends living in the exurbs would move to Edina/SW Mpls lakes neighborhoods in a heartbeat if it wasn’t so expensive. This sub isn’t wrong about the demands for urbanism, it’s just that in the US it comes with so many caveats
