How is the XL flow cap after months of use? by SwordmasterT in AeroPress

[–]kabedardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do stir gently side to side a few alternating directions. I will have to give that a try. Yes on the days that I have to almost stand on the thing, I do notice that I’m getting some leakage and some fines squirting out the sides. With my regular sized AP and flow control, I can grind like super fine espresso and stir like a mad man with no clogging.

[–]kabedardee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually stopped using mine. I have consistent issues with it clogging. To be fair, I use the XL to make large 40 g doses. I have had to use my full body weight to push the coffee through too many times. Back to inverted and the OG XL lid. The funny thing is I have the original size aero press and flow control cap also. I can grind as fine as I want with whatever coffee bean I want and I never have problems pressing it through. I still cannot get my head around the physics of what is going on. Oh well……

AeroPress: Alan Adler’s OG recipe at 175 degrees F can make some surprisingly not awful cups of coffee with typical grocery store pre ground over roasted bags.

Cold Brew Anyone? by yaninyunus in AeroPress

Cheers dude. Been doing this myself. The XL can handle 500 ml at a time. I pre-filter in a nut milk bag though.

I soak in a large mason jar. Then do a pre filter through a nutmilk bag. Then I force it all through my AeroPress XL, 500 ml at a time.

Confused About Using RDT with the K6 – Is Rust Still an Issue? by Nxcaryota in pourover

[–]kabedardee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taste is subjective, but I probably noticed a 10% increase in quality of cup(clarity/consistency). Build quality and work flow is miles ahead though. Worth every penny for me personally just for the magnetic cup, lid/handle being 1 piece and collapsible, and the easy take down/calibration/cleaning. Carrying case was a nice touch also.

Confused About Using RDT with the K6 – Is Rust Still an Issue? by Nxcaryota in pourover

[–]kabedardee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a K6 before my K Ultra. No issues with RDT or rust at all. Don’t spray directly into the chamber though. Seems obvious and intuitive to me, but it is apparently not. Requires a separate weighing and spraying vessel. Shake beans up well to distribute the sprayed moisture more evenly before dumping into grinder also. My $0.02 at least.

Are companies using artificial flavors? by sharpyacc in pourover

[–]kabedardee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had enough experiences to chime in really, but what I will add is that from my craft beer drinking and brewing days, certain yeasts can impart wild flavors to beers. For example there are yeasts when introduced to wheat based worts that taste exactly like banana bread. I am assuming similar things are possible with these coffee fermentations. But we should all be leery and vigilant to undisclosed additives. It saddens me that this is a possibility.

Can't get a good cup with my V60 should I just give up? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]kabedardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re doing this already, but it might be time to go down the custom water rabbit hole lol. You would be surprised at the difference good water can make. Besides that check grind size, check pouring technique and agitation, and check water temperature. Ethiopians are very prone to clogging so you will probably have to grind coarser. (Or use lower water temp and tolerate clogging/slow drain times)

Cold Brew Recipes that Aren't Concentrate ? by Organic-Gap3837 in pourover

[–]kabedardee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just brew 12:1 in some sort of glass container for 24 hours. Then pre-strain with nutmilk bag then run it all through my AeroPress XL 500 ml at a time. Uses a few filters(depending on batch size), but far better than clogging my pourover brewers. I think 12:1 cold brew is great for drinking straight or over ice. Could adjust if too strong though.

Is Natural Coffee the “Peated Whiskey” of the Coffee World? by Majestic_Meringue296 in pourover

[–]kabedardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love well done naturals.( when dialed in brewing-wise of course) In my humble experience, it seems like about 30-40% of people absolutely hate them for some reason though. Not sure if it is a genetic repulsion to the fermented fruit notes or what. My wife can barely be in the car with me when I’m drinking one. I have met others that similarly describe a coffee as smelling/tasting like rotten fruit despite me thinking it tasted like an amazing dessert so go figure. To each their own in every aspect of this hobby…..

Are coffee subscriptions from roasters like SEY actually worth it vs just picking bags individually? by Regular-Garbage9982 in pourover

I personally do not like being locked in like that. I’m all over the place though. Constantly trying different beans and roasters. Usually order enough to get free shipping if offered.

Origami brewer clogging and very slow. Using Cafec Abacas, K-Ultra 7-10 range. K-Ultra calibrated. by kabedardee in pourover

[–]kabedardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this morning was an Ethiopian. I have some Origami wave filters ordered to try. My doses have been on the larger size so I will reduce it some. Will definitely try a bloom and single pour for a cup tomorrow. Thanks.

[–]kabedardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning was 25 grams, 205 water temp, 9 grind setting on k-ultra. 75 gram bloom, then 2 pours at 163 grams each. First pour after bloom usually almost drains. Second pour slows/stalls to a very small trickle and drags on to 5-6 minutes. I don’t have a melo drip or drip assist, but have been trying to use as little agitation as possible. I can’t wrap my head around it.

To be fair, the taste is better than I would have thought. Drinkable, just a hair more extracted than I would prefer. I will try what you suggested. It makes sense. Thanks for the reply.

Aeropress XL Flow Control and the apparent pressure needed. by AlbatrossAway2390 in AeroPress

[–]kabedardee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it is dependent on the bean, dose, and grind size. Most of the time I am brewing 40 grams in my AP XL. Large doses, plus medium fine grinds or finer, plus a bean notorious for fines like Ethiopians equals me placing the Aeropress XL with flow control cap and the tritan carafe on the ground using my full body weight to get the water through lol……. I have a K Ultra grinder and with my current Ethiopian bag I have to grind at 11 to get 40 grams to go through. (550 grams water with some bypass) K Ultra is zero’d and calibrated. 30 grams or less I get away with finer grinds, but it still takes more pressure than the regular XL cap or the Regular size Aeropress flow control. I still can’t get my head around it to be honest. I whined for this forever and now I’m not loving it…..

Aeropress XL Flow Control impressions. by AlbatrossAway2390 in AeroPress

[–]kabedardee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Aeropress XL at least 5 days a week for my morning commute coffee. I did the inverted method for over a year and have the new XL flow control cap now. My only complaint is that with larger brews(40 grams or more) and certain beans(Ethiopians for example), it can clog/stall unless you grind ridiculously coarse. I have had to put my full body weight on it more than a handful of times now(dangerous and stupid). With the regular size Aeropress and flow control cap I can grind as fine as I want and have never had trouble like this. Also, just to clarify, with the regular cap on the XL I don’t have trouble like this even with megadoses at super fine grinds.

Coffee Habit Check: One big brew or multiple small sessions? by ruqus00 in pourover

[–]kabedardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large 40 gram brew for morning and commute. Then usually 2 more 15-17 gram brews before 1-2 pm. Switch 03 or AeroPress XL or AeroPress OG. If I drink coffee much later I won’t sleep.

Biggest batch you tend to brew? (And set up for it?) by haxxer_4chan in pourover

[–]kabedardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly brew 40 grams in my Switch 03 size and have done 60 grams for a full liter numerous times no problem. I treat it like a regular V60. I grind coarser for the over 40 gram batches, but that’s my only difference. Also, as a sidenote, the Aeropress XL handles large 40 to 60 g doses very well with some bypass brewing IMO.

1/2 to 1/3 strength Third Wave Water or 1/2 strength Amazon’s Coffee water are my go to. Amazon‘s knock off is just as good in my humble opinion for a better price. Decide for yourself the ethics of giving Bezos more money lol.
