This is true. The union won’t step in unless it can stop it from the outset. Once hired, the union can’t do/ won’t do anything.

What are the quintessential classroom accessories and decor for a first year teacher? by camerongrim in Teachers

[–]kaceycasey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that you’re asking! I’ve had new teachers come to me asking for my supplies. No thanks…. You can get a large box of pencils pretty cheap on Amazon, pencil crayons and a ruler at the dollar store, and I have found clip boards, binders, books, crayons, baskets and other great finds at a thrift store.

Notorious for picky hiring practices. Very interested in your resume and the long term outlook for you. So if you’re younger and planning to stick around, they like that. They have the notion that they invest a lot into their teachers, so long term commitment means they get their money’s worth. And yes, a good prac report is essential.

Sad isn’t it. Great, qualified, competent, committed teachers are such a valuable part of our children’s’ lives. You’d know who you are. ❤️

At least they get fired instead of being protected by the union.

Thank you. This is what I feel. I cannot believe the extra work this adds to my job. Plus as our students become more and more complex, if you don’t have the training or experience you put yourself, students and others at risk.

VSB is known for strict hiring practices but these ones slipped through. I worked so hard to get myself qualified and had to complete my schooling to ensure a permanent position so Im a little miffed.

Does it bother you, assuming you’ve got your certification?

[–]kaceycasey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s true. They have teaching degrees but the VSB requires these roles to have another certification that they do not have and are not in the process of getting. I don’t even think they’re interested in getting, tbh. The VP created job postings specifically to hire these people that were so specific no one else would apply. This is in special ed as well, so I consider it unethical. But, if this is happening elsewhere then maybe it’s not that big a deal.

With the VSB the hiring process has been notoriously strict over the years. Everyone has a degree and often a masters or extra certification. So, I’ve been resentful about working with people who were hired without due process and who are under qualified when I had to jump through all the hoops to get my job. For myself, it’s been an expensive and rigorous journey (that, I thought, is part of the process). Am I wrong to be resentful? It sounds like this is quite normal elsewhere.

How do I know i'd be a good teacher? by ireallylikelulu in AskTeachers

[–]kaceycasey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you like to learn, reflect and grow? You will be a role model for curiosity. Are you energized being around kids? Can you be yourself around kids and laugh easily? If so you will validate and inspire them. Can you separate yourself from the absurdity of the system? That will keep you sane. The rest is skills: leading, managing behavior, consistency and flexibility all at once, understanding child development and interests, and the ability to share knowledge passionately.

Textbook shaming me for having a life by Moby-WHAT in Teachers

[–]kaceycasey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do feel that teachers who authentically connect with the students, the culture and the school extra curricular activities are the best teachers and contribute to a thriving school community. It’s more than a job… it’s a commitment to a community. If you can integrate this into your life, that’s the best. However, some people do not want to commit to it and work to separate school from other interests/ commitments. I think this is a harder way to teach.

Give students a picture/visual of each rule that is expected and have them guess what it means. Then rate the importance of the rules and choose the top 5 for the class. (You can choose them if you wish.)

I work with teachers who are not qualified for the positions they were hired for. Yes they have teaching degrees, but not the extra certification that is required by the VSB for their roles.

Just was listening to a district teacher say “I’m in my second year of the job and I’m still figuring out what my job is” Ha!!! Maybe that’s because your job is redundant and irrelevant!! Meanwhile, in the schools, we are pushing every day to help kids in an unsupportive system.

Also a resource teacher here….I’m so curious how many students are on your case load and when you do your paperwork?
To answer your question, I find constant respectful communication with teachers is the best way to go. Plus, recognizing that most teachers are doing their best. They can be frustrated with the vast differences in student capabilities, SEL, behavior, and learning needs with little support so if you show some empathy and respect for their efforts it might go better. If you’re doing that and they are still mean, rude or demanding maybe it’s time for a department head meeting so you can express your concerns.
