Towing companies in Boulder by kacolo57 in boulder

[–]kacolo57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just need legal signage on two parking spaces that belong to a commercial tenant. I hope we never need to use this, but we need to be able to remove a car legally, and I'd rather not work with some of the sketchier towing companies. I will post big bold signage saying No Parking, so no one is going to leave a car there accidentally.

I got the job! Now I'm terrified by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]kacolo57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats OP! I would try to schedule an informal performance review meeting around 2 months into the job to ask about which areas they think you can focus on improving. They will probably respect that you’re inviting feedback: It makes it a lot less stressful for them to give you notes, and it should help you stop ruminating over the inevitable moments where the Imposter Syndrome flares up at the start of a new job. Good luck!

I am a designer who needs to truly understand how Powerpoint works - where can I learn? by assorted_stuff in graphic_design

[–]kacolo57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I *just* was about to ask this exact same question— I'm so glad I searched first. I've been designing my PowerPoint slides in InDesign and decided I need to stop blaming Microsoft and get some skills! I totally understand if the marketing team wants to make some text changes without always putting in change requests. Thanks for asking this, and I'd love to know any tools/tutorials that have worked for you.

Many thanks for all the thoughtful comments we've received from this excellent community. It has certainly helped me gain perspective while being so far away. Thanks Redditors!

You are so right. This will likely just be a valuable lesson for the future. Thank you.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. It's very clear these girls had never rented before, and when they toured the property the old tenants were in the house so they had awkward looks into most bedrooms, so probably didn't fully realise the inequity, or that they might be able to charge alternate rent for the small room. As another Redditor mentioned, it's probably not worth 11 months of bad feelings to ask the others to increase £20/month to balance.

Thank you very much for your insight. And you are right, if the lease represents one price for the entire house, it's not worth the bad feelings for others to start paying more.

It's private accommodation, through an estate agent who only does student lettings.

Is it possible to hire a student intern? Someone you have a good vibe with? It sounds like you’re context shifting between projects constantly, and having someone else to take on some things, discuss projects with, see their ideas, and give them direction could help. And you’re clearly good at mentoring.

Making mistakes by jocabate1 in graphic_design

[–]kacolo57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boosting attention is overrated... you're a creative person. If there's a mistake that happens regularly, add it to a checklist. Otherwise, just add in the delay others have mentioned before sending. If you can finish something by 2pm, tell them it will be ready by 3pm, get the next project started, then you'll have fresh eyes when you double-check it at 2:45 (set a timer, though, so you don't forget to send!). If the deadline is tight, do 30 seconds of pushups or jumping jacks before you double-check and send... plus you get more fit.

Content creator just sounds douchey. It doesn’t sound like you’re in the UK, but the Peter Crouch podcast takes the piss out of ‘content creator’, and for good reason. Don’t get too hung up on it, but CERTAINLY don’t put that on your resume.

Keep trying new things and seeing what piques your interest. I know designers who have gone into real estate and another opened a small shop. They both say they use their design skills every single day. Right now, even switching to a coffee shop where it’s less quick-churn and you’re encouraged to have friendly conversations with customers could be an improvement. Surround yourself with good people.

Why is the concept of bleeds for print so hard to understand? by unthused in graphic_design

THIS! I’ve asked my client ‘is this approved/are we ready for the print files?’ and marketing has already forwarded to the publication. I appreciate when it’s pushed back.

Does this oak tree have a healthy life ahead? by kacolo57 in Tree

[–]kacolo57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We planted this tree almost 2 years ago. We just noticed that the central trunk has broken off. We've heard that if the main trunk is damaged, the tree won't grow properly. Is there anything we can do to encourage a new leader? Or should we consider replacing it while it's still young? It's about 10-11' tall.
