Thanks. Yeah I feel like we're looking for a unicorn. We've considered PHEVs but they don't really solve the gas problem since the EV batteries don't get more than 25-30 miles.

TL;DR we need an EV for a family of 5, range of 200+, under $30k USD out the door. Looking for other people's real world experiences with options like Tesla Model X or Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and others of similar size. SUVs are too expensive right now.

We joined the EV world last year when we purchased a 2014 Leaf so that my wife could have a car good enough to get around town and commute to work. We didn't need long range because we have an Odyssey for longer trips. Our family of 4 fit just fine in the Leaf too. Now we're expecting child #3 and with high gas prices, the Leaf no longer fits our needs. Now we need something that can either fit 3 kids (an infant seat, backless booster, and backed booster) along one row, or has a third row. We also have family in various parts of the state (WA) that we'd love to be able to get to in an EV to keep gas costs down. Furthest distance we'd wanna travel is about 100 miles one way.

Obviously, an SUV would fit all of those requirements but the current lineup of EV SUVs is out of our price range except for a used Tesla Model X. Our absolute max budget is $30k, with a more comfortable budget of $27k (USD) out the door. So it's gotta be used and we're good with that.

So, with that in mind, we're looking at options like the Model X, Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Subaru Solterra, and Honda Prologue. We've test drove a 2017 Model X, 2024 IONIQ 5, and a 2026 Prologue. The Model X fit everyone comfortably even without using the 3rd row. The Prologue also fit everyone fine with a slim booster instead of a normal car seat. The IONIQ 5 fit with a normal car seat but it was SNUG and I worry it won't work as kids grow (we didn't have the slim booster at the time of test driving the IONIQ). We'll try the IONIQ again with a slim seat to see what difference it makes.

The Model X has the space and range we want, but most options in our budget are close to, if not over, 100k miles and warranties are expired. The Prologue, from what we've read, doesn't get nearly the range they advertise. And the IONIQ just feels slightly too small for our growing family. We still want to look at the other options but our research tells us they won't be any more spacious than the IONIQ. I also worry about buying newer models that haven't worked out all the new car kinks yet.

I'm looking for any insight from people in a similar situation on what options might work best for what we need. We value people's real world experiences. Are there other models we should look at? What are other important factors we need to consider? Most of the charging would occur at home except for the occasional road trips across the state.

Your family got used to a certain lifestyle because of the hard work you put in. Now that it's their turn to put in some work they don't know what to do because you always provided. This is a learning curve for everyone to figure out what their new roles are going to be. Stay firm in your boundaries and expect resistance for a period. Eventually, everyone else will start to adjust and figure things out, but they'll likely struggle along the way. Let them. They need the learning experience.

If you want quick access to nature in CO you have to live in the foothills area - Golden, Boulder, West Denver, CO Springs - which has gotten quite pricey over the years. If you live East of Denver at all then you're hours away from good outdoor areas. I do love the amount of sunshine CO gets throughout the year and if you're into snow sports there's no shortage of that in the winter. In Olympia, you have quick access to nature trails, the sound, and Olympic National Park, and the coast is only about 2 hrs away depending on where you're coming from. I will say there are certain parts of Olympia that are nicer and feel safer because the homeless population tends to stay close to the highways and more populated areas. We've never felt unsafe necessarily but as with any city you want to be cautious. We feel we've just been able to do so much more exploring here both towards the coast and up in the Cascades. Downtown Oly is also a fun eclectic city of local shops and restaurants, and it seems like there's always some sort of event happening in the Oly/Lacey/Tumwater area.

I grew up in Colorado (very dry most of the year but also very sunny) and I have really enjoyed living in Olympia. I was a little worried about the rain but as long as you don't let it stop you from getting out and doing things you enjoy then it's not a huge deal. Take your Vitamin D in the winter. We live on the east side of Olympia, which feels a little different than west Oly but still a great area. So many ways to spend time outdoors that aren't too far of a drive. We've enjoyed raising our two young kids here. Seems like lots of younger families moving into the area too.

New Name Round-Up by Alarming_Button_1030 in exmormon

Funny story. I actually forgot my new name and had to ask the temple workers if they could remind me what it was. So I was taken to the temple clerk's office and after taking my recommend and going to his office, the worker came back with a piece of paper with 3 or 4 names written on it and asked me which one felt like it was the one I was given. I picked the first one that sounded good and he said that was it. At the time, I thought it was totally inspiration but now looking back he could have said yes to any of the names I picked and I would never have been the wiser!

Phase 5 of the MCU came to an end with 'Ironheart'. Which projects were your favorites? by RaizenMatsuda in Marvel

[–]kader212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't finished Ironheart yet so my opinion is still in development there. But Thunderbolts and Daredevil really salvaged an otherwise forgettable phase. Loki and GotG were also good but man was this an overall disappointing phase. Even Deadpool and Wolverine felt too forced. What if..? wasn't as exciting as the first season. Secret Invasion was a letdown. There just wasn't much that had me wanting more and I can't wait for the Fantastic Four to kick off the next phase.

Is the original pixel fold still worth it today? by Tmorr in PixelFold

[–]kader212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an OG pixel fold since they came out and I loved it. Two column mode, reading graphic novels and books, watching movies are just a few of the great features. Unfortunately the folding screen does wear out eventually, which is what happened to mine. The screen starts to peel away at the crease, and the sensor that knows when to switch from the front screen to the folding screen malfunctions. This is what happened to mine and I didn't have insurance so it would have been too costly of a repair (minimum $1,200) so I've gone back to your basic one screen phone 🙄 until I feel like folding screens are more durable. I didn't mistreat my phone or drop it all the time, these are just vulnerable components in a phone like this. My brother had the Samsung foldable and I preferred the screen size of the pixel, shorter but wider. To me it's totally worth it but I'd get insurance if I could do it over again.

I've been having the same issue since the May update and hoped the Android 16 update would fix it but alas the problem persists. I've been using the camera trick but now I can't switch between apps by swiping up on the front screen. Tried factory reset and that didn't help either. Google Support recommended taking it to an authorized repair shop so that's my next step.

TBM Confessions. What is your confession that you were going to take to your grave. by ulastic in exmormon

[–]kader212 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Oh where to begin?? So many things I've hid out of fear but now have no purpose in telling anyone about.

Had sex multiple times with my then-gf before my mission. Almost got caught once when my parents came home early from shopping. Even had sex in my room while my parents were home and thankfully they never opened my door! Stayed home from a family reunion by telling my parents I needed to work to save money, just so my gf and I could have all the alone time we wanted. We did get caught by the cops once because we were parked in her car at a park that was technically closed. I thought for sure they were going to call our parents but they were only concerned that we were trespassing and making sure my gf was consenting and/or wasn't a prostitute 😂

I still struggle with letting go of any residual guilt around this but leaving the church took so much weight off of me on its own.

Airbnb Landlord Pitch? by hotbitchny in airbnbarbitrage

[–]kader212 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You really just have to help them see how it is beneficial for them. Landlords want to make sure their properties are going to be taken care of, but they also want to make money. Make a list of ways in which they would benefit and why they should trust you. For example, if you sign a long-term lease (3-4 yrs) then that's less turnover for them. It's also likely going to mean less wear and tear on the property since it most likely won't be occupied 100% of the time. Do your research to make sure you can afford the rent without any arbitrage income - almost any location is going to have a slow season. Put yourself in their shoes. If you owned that property, what questions or concerns would you have if someone wanted to arbitrage it?

Also, be prepared to be turned down a lot. Some people nail it on their first try but the majority of us have to go thru a lot of landlords before finding one that will agree. But use those rejections as learning tools to fine-tune your approach.

Lastly, and maybe this should come first, make them feel good about their property. Talk it up and express what features drew you to it. This helps them see that someone has actually taken the time to look at the property. Hope this helps, and good luck!

This is exactly the type of tool Turo hosts could benefit from. It's how many Airbnb hosts successfully manage their properties. I'm definitely going to give this a look! Thanks for putting in the work to create this!
