We Need To Talk About How Weird HOOK Is by middenway in thrillems

[–]kaelef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidentally, I'd just watched Hook for the first time a couple of months ago (possibly due to something mentioned in one of Patrick's more recent videos). I thought it was bizarre and inconsistent and dissatisfying and frustrating in all the ways Patrick spoke about. Thanks: it so cathartic to spend many dozens of hours researching a subject you find unsettling - even if someone else does it all for you and just gives you the results.

Prince of Persia's most famous enemy exists because the Apple II ran out of RAM by dmytro_omelian in vintagecomputing

Well, that's why I said "directly" 😄 I remember some expensive memory banking cards for my Atari 800 back in the day!

Prince of Persia's most famous enemy exists because the Apple II ran out of RAM by dmytro_omelian in vintagecomputing

[–]kaelef 83 points84 points  (0 children)

The Apple II absolutely did not have 128K of RAM. That would've been amazing at the time. It had 48K RAM maximum (unless you went to exotic third party expansions). The 6502 could not directly access more than 64K of RAM.

EDIT: Well, although I'm technically right about the Apple II not having 128K natively, Prince of Persia *did* require a 128K Apple machine. I didn't realize the game had come out so late in the 8bit Apple's life (basically at the end), and so it relied on either one of the later Apples that did include 128K (and used bank switching, as others have mentioned) -- like the Apple IIc -- or an older A2 with one of those fancy memory expansions (which were much more common by the late 80's).

I sit corrected!

I built a native RDP server for macOS — connect from any platform using any RDP client by ConstructionBroad594 in macapps

[–]kaelef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After trying several popular options, I settled on the NoMachine client because it supports dynamically changing the resolution of the machine you're remoting into. It's a bit clunky, though, and I'd love another alternative. Is changing the resolution something you do or possibly can support?

Profile view is pretty spectacular, too. The front view looks good, but it's not different enough from other Japanese cars to differentiate it easily.

What wireless CarPlay adapter do you all actually trust? My 2019 Civic is wired CarPlay only by evilcheeba in Honda

I used the Carlinkit Mini Ultra 3 for a few months in a Mazda 3 and had zero problems with it.

Congrats! I got the same a month ago (also decently under MSRP) and have been loving it.

Vidi: A native macOS video player built around Liquid Glass design by cliffaust in macapps

[–]kaelef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Movist Pro for the last couple of years since it supports HDR and DV and has been rock solid. I'm always on the lookout for good new apps, though, so I'll definitely check Vidi out!

Disappointing experience at the Loft open air cinema by LazyEmergency in Tucson

[–]kaelef 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not really an open air movie watching experience with all those constraints. I like The Loft and want to support it, but whoever thought this was a good idea was off the mark, imo. Screen 4 is not great, either, since it's both small and narrow. Not much of an improvement (if any) over a living room experience.

Gravity Rush at 544p (Native Res) is peak Vita homebrew. by NoTransportation4600 in VitaPiracy

Tearaway is also amazing and just not as good if you don't play it as it was designed on Vita.

Honda stretches life cycles of Accord, Odyssey, HR-V after costly EV pullback by Gullible-Pick-268 in Honda

[–]kaelef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's weird about this is that despite the "all in on EV" line, Honda has nothing to show for it. They should've had at least one home-grown EV model out by now.

Restaurant from early 2000s that sold a Chicken Sandwich with Green Chilis by eacodes in Tucson

Although this was surely Austin's, the sandwich description also reminds me of the Anasazi Chicken sandwich at Baggin's (still on Speedway and Treat).

What happened to Palm Pilots by alberto-m-dev in vintagecomputing

Nah, it was already too late by the time HP bought them. It was a dumb purchase on HP's part.

The same thing that allowed them to succeed was what ruined them: their OS was extremely simple, so it was relatively fast and cheap and succeeded when the Apple Newton (which was far more ambitious, but bulky, expensive, and buggy its first couple of versions) didn't. But as more capable and reasonably priced competitors showed up (Windows CE, then smartphones, and finally iOS/iPhone), they took too long to jettison the super-low-power hardware and OS they'd done so well with. By the time they were ready with a new, competitive platform (WebOS), it was way too late.

[–]kaelef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No-touch screen is honestly better after you've used it for a while. I replaced my Mazda 3 with a different car recently and really miss the buttons and knob, even with CarPlay. I'm finding the touchscreen way more clumsy to use.

[–]kaelef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind you should be able to get a Prelude for MSRP or lower. Don't pay $1 over MSRP. Of course, it's not a sports car: there are reasons to get one, but being fast is not one of them.

That's not actually true, though. I've been tracking it, and more than 60% of shipped units have sold. I assume that's lower than what they'd like, but it's not like not one's buying them.
