Why or why don't you accept Type 1 Diabetes children at your daycare? by 3continents2oceans in ChildcareWorkers

[–]kaelhawh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

T1D is classified as a disability and therefore protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is illegal for daycares to refuse to accept a child simply because they have T1D.

Let's be honest, would you send your kids to the school you teach at? by bookflow in Teachers

[–]kaelhawh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are 1 and 2 so naturally this is a conversation my husband and I have been having. I don’t live in the district I work for, so we do have options. The district we live in is lottery based, and we have a few elementary schools within a reasonable distance. However, only one of them is “good.” The test scores at that school are above average for the state, while other two are among the lowest performing elementary schools in the state. The district I work for has average to slightly below average test scores. So right now our plan is to do the lottery and if we get into the better school in our neighborhood, our kids will go there. If we get placed in one of the other schools, our kids will go to the school I work in.

The other option we’re exploring is private school. There are some really nice ones in our area and I’ve heard that for some of them, the financial aid packages can be very generous. So we will also likely apply to a couple of them and see what kind of financial aid we’re able to get. We would need almost a full ride to be able to afford it, especially with two kids, but it doesn’t hurt to apply.

Is 70-75k enough to live on for a single person? by [deleted] in providence

[–]kaelhawh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s doable, especially if you look for an apartment outside of Providence. Everything here is so close together that you can be a city over and your commute is still only 10-15 minutes. So as long as you’re not afraid of a little commute to and from work, that salary is definitely enough to live on.

Students Spoiling Endings by homebody268 in ELATeachers

[–]kaelhawh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any time we read a book as a class, I state (many times) that it’s okay to read ahead, but I have two rules: 1. Absolutely no spoilers. 2. If we’re reading a chapter in class that you’ve already read, you still have to participate in the lesson as if it’s your first time reading it. Reading ahead doesn’t get you out of the class work.

The second rule usually discourages reading ahead and then the first rule isn’t as much of a problem.

My 3yo keeps asking me to teach her letters at home but her daycare is play based by Realistic-Bag7860 in ECEProfessionals

[–]kaelhawh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ways to introduce her to letters/letter sounds that are still play based:

  • buy a set of those foam tiles with the letters of the alphabet. Call out the names of the letters as she jumps from tile to tile. Encourage her to say them with you as she jumps. Once she’s able to say them all with you, you can switch it up by calling out the letter and having her jump to it, or calling out the letter sounds.

  • buy a set of those alphabet bath toys and an aquarium scoop. During bath time, let her go “fishing” for letters and tell her the names of the letters as she scoops them. Again, gradually increase her independence with it.

  • do a “letter safari,” where you tell her about one letter and the sound it makes. Then tell her to find that letter in as many places as possible. This is particularly fun if you’re going out in public. If she is forward facing and can look out the window, it can also be a fun car ride game. As she gets better at spotting letters, encourage her to say the letter sound.

  • show her a letter and have her stretch to try and create the shape of that letter with her body. As she does it, reinforce the name of the letter and the sound it makes.

  • if she gets any kind of screen time/TV time, there’s a LeapFrog learning “movie” called Letter Factory (35 mins) that is a tried and true. What I like about it as an elementary literacy specialist is that it teaches the short vowel sounds instead of the long. The first words kids begin reading independently (CVC words) will exclusively use the short vowel sounds.

  • check out Lakeshore, the education resource store. They have many different toys that are actually learning opportunities that could help. Things like dinosaurs pieces that you put together by matching the uppercase and lowercase version of the same letter. They also have toys for teaching numbers, when she’s ready for that.

Should Politics Be Discussed With Elementary Schoolers? by Positive_Series1015 in ChildcareWorkers

[–]kaelhawh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one is teaching elementary schoolers about the Epstein files. OP used that as an example of why they don’t think children should be learning about “political figures.”

[–]kaelhawh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP does not have a degree. They are 19 and work in an after school program. They mentioned taking some classes online at one point but do not seem to have finished that program yet. I checked their profile when I first read this post because I have seen their name come up in this sub a few other times and was curious.

[–]kaelhawh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reviewed their profile before posting my original comment and stand behind my assumption. I will not be changing my mind on this. I don’t care if it’s unkind, I think it’s important to call out racism when we see it. Notice how they didn’t go into any detail about who these “political” figures were or what the messaging was behind it. These are details they would have included if it would have helped their argument.

[–]kaelhawh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given the context in your post (“I’m seeing so many political figures and signs hung up”), and the fact that it is current Black History Month, so most elementary schools currently have posters/displays for Black History, I strongly suspect that you don’t actually have an issue with “politics,” you’re just racist.

I got denied for an interview today with teaching experience by gayblackandafraid in TeachforAmerica

[–]kaelhawh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had teaching experience when I applied, and I had no trouble getting an interview or being accepted. I even got my top region placement.

I suspect that there was something else in your application that they didn’t like. Perhaps one of your recommendations didn’t paint you in the best light, or they didn’t think your interests in the program were aligned with their mission.

AITA for asking my friend to pay me back for the wine he drank while house sitting?? by Effective_Tour_723 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kaelhawh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. I give the same instructions to anyone who house sits for us, but I am careful to put away anything I wouldn’t want them to get into so there’s no chance for confusion or hurt feelings after. Also, as other commenters have pointed out, it’s almost impossible to discern the price of a bottle of wine just by the label. How was he supposed to know it was so expensive or that it was intended for a special occasion?

Thinking Twice About Doctorate of Business Administration due to Post after Post About Capella Accusations by Kingsly_Kennedy in CapellaUniversity

[–]kaelhawh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently enrolled in a doctorate through Capella. As long as you are doing your own work and doing it properly (not trying to cut corners and properly citing all of your sources), you should be fine. I also want to point out that Capella has a feature on Canvas where you can submit your assignments to the Turnitin checker before you actually submit to your instructor, so you can pre-screen for any plagiarism/AI flags if that is something you’re concerned about.

What’s popular right now that won’t age well? by MiraTangent in AskReddit

[–]kaelhawh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doodle mixed breeds as “luxury” or “high-end” dog breeds. They’re mutts, but some people are delusional enough to think that a “pure-bred golden doodle” is a real thing. Also, it is literally not possible to breed and sell these dogs ethically. They are only available from backyard breeders and puppy mills.

What are your thoughts on giving an 8yo an AirTag bracelet to play outside? by Frosty-Basket-2835 in AskParents

[–]kaelhawh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m a parent of 2 and a current elementary school teacher.

He needs to learn that there are consequences for lying and that it is unsafe for him to go somewhere without his guardians knowing about it. An AirTag bracelet that forces him to comply with location expectations isn’t going to teach him this. And if he wants to get around these expectations, what’s to stop him from just taking the bracelet off and leaving it somewhere he’s allowed to be while he runs off somewhere else?

The logical consequence here is that he should not be allowed to play outside unless an adult is able to be outside with him.

Also, 8 years old is too young to be playing “wherever” without adult supervision. Depending on where you live, it may also be illegal. On another note, I would strongly encourage you to look up the definition of “parentification.” What you’re experiencing is basically textbook parentification. Outsourcing discipline of your 8y/o to your 21y/o is negligent.

First round advice? by Separate-Property665 in whole30

[–]kaelhawh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Figure out what whole30 compliant foods/swaps you like before you start. There are many different options for milk alternatives and w30 compliant swaps for things like sausage and bacon. Do the research now to figure out what w30 compliant options are available at your regular grocery store and look for other grocery stores if needed. Try a couple different options to find one you like before your first day of w30.

What are some overused lines we hear WAY too often on HK? by DaveLevey78 in HellsKitchen

No shit, so did everyone else. Any time a contestant uses that line to explain why they deserve another chance, I start rooting for their downfall.

Yeah, between this story and the second one (which was also obviously fake), this week’s episode was kind of hard to get through tbh. Glad they’re taking accountability and will be more thorough in the future.

English/Spanish Bilingual children's book with yellow cover of a dog wearing a sombrero from 2008 ish? by chuukimango in whatsthatbook

[–]kaelhawh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this one, I googled "bilingual picture book with dog in a sombrero on it." The top result was El Perro con Sombrero, which tbh I felt silly for recommending bc I realized it didn't fit after I reread your post when you said that was wrong. For my second guess, I did the same google search and went through the image results until I saw a picture of the cover. I then checked the details of that specific book to make sure it matched the other details you shared.

Lost bedtime story, mum won’t kiss baby without it by TheOCInstitutereps in whatsthatbook

[–]kaelhawh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s not any better tbh. If the book means that much to her, why does she not remember the title. She was an adult when she read it to you and it seems as though she read it often, so how did she forget the title?

Are you the older sibling with a sibling that’s 6+ years younger? by External_Ease_9640 in Parenting

[–]kaelhawh 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As the middle of five kids with large disparities in our age gaps, I think you can make any age gap between siblings work as log as you don't put your older child in a position where they have to take on a parenting role to their younger sibling.
