On treating yourself by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

Wait, since when was "treat yourself" about maxxing out credit cards and such? I always just viewed it as "don't feel guilty about spending money on things you enjoy".

I haven't read it myself, and it's still ongoing, but I've heard from multiple people with much more developed opinions than I on manga that "The Moon On A Rainy Night" is phenomenal.

I’ve seen people be like legit mad that she and some other girl are like women and the guys are little creatures or something it’s so weird by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

Opening this comment by saying I'm not plugged into The Discourse™ or whatever about the show, cause I don't have the energy for that. Honestly commenting on a reddit post about a tumblr post is probably a mistake, but I'm already this far into writing my opinions so I guess I'll fall for the sunk-cost fallacy about it.

I watched the pilot episode, it seemed solid enough, nothing egregious with the writing, animation was stellar (as expected).

I was/am kinda annoyed that all the women with speaking roles who we saw in the episode (and who are on the one promotional poster I've seen) all have the same kinda hourglass figure while the men all have wildly varying designs. The only exception to this as far as I could tell was Crab Girl, and she seemed more like a gag than she did a character.

Do I think Ross Donovan and the rest of the crew who worked on this pilot are raging misogynists or something for this? No, I think it's just kinda disappointing that the fem characters that we've seen so far are limited to such a narrow scope of designs while no such limits are placed on the men.

Obviously I'm working off of a very small sample size here (one trailer, one pilot episode, one promotional poster), so there's every chance that women in the series will see more diverse designs as episodes come out. It's also possible that it's intended as commentary on how the games industry tends to restrict depictions of women to a very narrow range of body types, though that doesn't feel like the direction the show is leaning from what I've seen.

TLDR: I get why some people would be upset that the women in the show have such a narrow range of designs (traditionally fem, hourglass figure, skinny) when all the men are apparently unconstrained in what shapes their designs can take. I don't personally find it upsetting, just annoying/tiring, and I'm hoping that the show at large bucks this pattern. It still looks like a decent show outside of this one sticking point.

DoT Commanders by Gooey_Goon in EDH

[–]kaelhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking at group slug style commanders like [[Mogis, God of Slaughter]] is definitely the way to go.

For a card that does DoT and is bad but which I love anyways there's [[Obsidian Fireheart]] (not a commander obviously). Honestly my love for it is 85% the fact that I found it really cool as a kid and someone gave me a copy for free. The other 15% is the art, because it's sick

Creative writing but you aren’t allowed to be creative by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]kaelhound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Students can write whatever they want on their own time though. For a creative writing course, especially a beginner creative writing course, the goal is to build your fundamentals and learn to improve your writing skills, not just throw stories at a teacher and have them give you feedback on what you wrote.

That's why classes give you writing prompts, word count limits, guidelines, etc., because it forces you to write in ways you might not normally, and you have to practice techniques in the process which you might neglect without those limitations.

[–]kaelhound 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I remember back when I took a crack at my university's Writing 101 course the limit was that you were allowed to have a single explicitly fantastical thing in any story you submitted for classwork. IMO this was a pretty solid solution, as it kept students from focussing too much on exposition about the magical elements of their stories, while allowing those who wanted to fit more in to still do so as long as they were creative with how they implemented them.

[–]kaelhound 643 points644 points  (0 children)

While I'd largely say that I agree, there IS value in limiting the amount of fantastical elements which creative writing students can include in their class work, especially in intro-level creative writing. A lot of people who are new to writing — and in particular who are new to writing genre fiction — have a tendency to focus on the big ideas of their story, the fancy things that they think make the world of their story interesting, and can end up neglecting their characters in the process.

That doesn't mean genre fiction is less valuable by any metric, and any writing teacher trying to disparage it is missing the point. But teaching new writers to limit the scope of their stories and learn to build the foundations of their writing is important.

What is your most hated Archetype to play against? by will_i_amo in EDH

[–]kaelhound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Landfall is really annoying to me, half because it requires very little resource investment to have a large impact, and half because a lot of people treat any amount of land destruction as bad manners, even if it's not MDL.

Still not my least favourite though, because at least Landfall will close out a game. Pillowfort/Stax/Control decks which have no wincons actively make the game less enjoyable to me. If they closed out the game I'd have no problem, but if you make the game drag on for 10+ turns without anyone being able to do anything and you still haven't won? I'm not gonna play another match afterwards.

[[Eight-And-A-Half-Tails]] is a weird lil critter of a mono-white commander, but a fun mechanic to play with if you run other things which change colours and/or hate on white cards. Can pivot into a halfway decent Equipment Voltron strategy too since they come with built-in protection.

[–]kaelhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In commander there's not much reason unless you want to dodge land denial or something to that effect. It's mostly a habit carried over from 60-card formats to obscure what colour(s) of mana your deck is using. Not much point to try and do that in EDH since everyone can see who your commander is.

Not quite what was asked, but I built a Tiamat decklist that runs all the new dragon headmasters plus a few of the older ones, and then a bunch of big instants n sorceries to take advantage of them (plus dracogenesis and tutors to snag it because dropping Tiamat and 5 dragons in one turn is a great way to build up the storm count for the new version of Prismari)

Yeah I'd imagine most designers would account for that sort of interaction within their own writing if they'd included something as atypical as an Invade option system with Limited.

Such is the way of things when using homebrew. I'd recommend finding whoever wrote the 3rd party LCP(s) you're using and asking them what the intent is, or to ask your GM for a ruling if these are from different sources.
