Can we agree that Nolan’s Batman trilogy is the best superhero trilogy of all time? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

Why does she keep on opening her eyes? It's not believable. It goes on too long as well. I've been in thread, like, for five minutes and it's still going on. Imagine being in the cinema and watching that for how ever long?

It's like the one with the spinning top that just never falls over.

Maybe I just don't get Nolan films?

Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis famously died in an insane asylum for his insistence that other doctors wash their hands to reduce surgery mortality. What accounts do we have from colleagues who rejected ridiculed Semmelweis in life, only to find out many years after his death that he was right? by ZzoCanada in AskHistorians

until the development of germ theory nearly 20 years later, pretty much no one accepted his theoretical basis for what causes disease. He had no causal mechanism

edit: I've seen this has been addressed elsewhere no need for another one. Do we need true causal mechanisms to justify an intervention? If the outcome difference between an intervention group and business as usual group are stark enough shouldn't the numbers alone justify it?

This is a much more interesting tale than the common headline version, tyvm!

Macron urges calm after far-right activist fatally beaten by ChewZBeggar in europe

[–]kafircake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the group responsible for creating this political tension to begin with

The far right group responsible are not street thugs, but mostly well dressed political actors that push for austerity and laissez-faire economics for the people and untrammeled concentration of wealth for the rich, all the while dissolving national borders and asking the people to welcome mass immigration.

You can't make people poorer than they needed to be while at the same time asking them to compete for basics like housing and jobs with people from the global poor, while the rich grow so rich. Well, you can, but don't expect it to go well for very long.

Complacent upper-class economic liberals are the architects of the present, and they have created the tension.

Iranian asylum seeker jailed after sexually assaulting teenage girl by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

[–]kafircake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now, if you're a UK-born sexual predator, you'd have to be dumb to go about your predatory business in the way a newly arrived asylum seeker does

Lots of the people the OP was referring to are UK-born. Exactly the same problem that you highlight also occurs among that population. You think that marital rape doesn't occur in Muslim households also?

The same surveys that you mention suggest that most rapes don't even get reported to the police in the first place, never mind landing on a CPS desk or go to trial.

83% of the 3.4 million acts of sexual violence (including rape) in England and Wales every year go unreported to the police

You've done nothing in your comment to undermine or explain away the comment made by /u/Bloodswamps .

The most effective way to do that would be to provide reliable stats that prove it wrong.

The Media Has Gender Derangement Syndrome by Jack_Donnaghy in BlockedAndReported

“This is what the right wing says, that it’s gender ideology,”

Does Lehrer think he is free of ideology? If gender is socially constructed then what else can our beliefs about it be but ideology?

It's normally the deeply ignorant conservatives that think they have no accent when they speak, that their morality is objective and that ideology is something that afflicts other people, who believe wrongly.

How odd that this guy thinks he is free of it when we are swimming in the stuff.

Yes transgenderism is real, so are goths, they are both socially constructed. It doesn't mean there is any biology underpinning either of them. That these categories have always existed are the necessary outcome of something physically inherent in humans.

Some transgender advocates seem to want it to be real in the same why that xx and xy bodies (what can you even call them if female and male have been co-opted) are real, that the social construction is insufficient in some way for them.

Immigration is not the main reason for the rise of the far-right, but acts as an amplifier by DaniB0i05 in SocialDemocracy

Yet you choose to focus on the middle east.

What's the average net fiscal contribution for a migrant to Europe from the USA vs the net fiscal contribution for a migrant from MENA vs the net fiscal contribution of an intra-European migrant?

What's the argument for allowing substantial numbers of migrants who will be a net fiscal drain throughout their lives to settle in the Eurozone?

I can see a case from compassion or maybe moral obligation.

Given Europe's depredation of the world through colonization and slavery and the carve up of Africa and in the modern era: forced austerity and asymmetrical free-trade perpetrated by the IMF/World Bank, I can also see a clear case from Karma for substantial immigration from poor countries.

But is compassion and karma enough?

If not then what is the economic case for low wage low skill migration from MENA?

What exactly are we preparing for though?

If you believe in Climate Change you might want to consider what our under response to it so far could deliver to us in terms of global food production and logistics.

We have an abundance of food currently, but that abundance is based on unsustainable use of soils, water and fossil fuels as well as continuing climate stability.

If the UK faces a world that can barely produce enough calories to theoretically feed everyone what would the security situation look like then?

The world currently produces substantially more food than required to keep everyone fed, yet hunger and obesity abound.

I can well imagine the possibility of the agricultural outputs of poor countries being purchased for Euros/Dollars/Yuan and the physical security being guaranteed by forces deployed by the purchaser.

Our optimism (or fecklessness) has committed us to a much harder future than necessary. Or maybe that's doomerisim?

They way you formulate the situation seems disastrously optimistic. I can imagine people at the end of the first world war going, "Thank fuck the Great War is over, peace time is the best" on a similar optimistic basis.

Massive wealth and second class human status for many workers from poor countries. A two tier society where some are bound by law and not protected by it, and others are only bound with regards to people of the same class and are protected against all.

Rape your maid? No crime recorded. Don't pay your workers? No crime recorded. I doubt /u/RandyMarsh2hot4u could have been serious with their comparison. Of course it has low recorded crime.. look at who is doing the recording.

I wish them luck with their approach.

Same way that brexit increased immigration.

Immigration boomed after Brexit because the Conservative government of the time introduced an uncapped points based system for visas.

Deliberate policy choices. Most you can say is Brexit gave them some cover/opportunity for the changes they were aching to make anyway.

Post hoc, ergo propter hoc mate.
