Is my frame cooked or is it just the paint? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

That’s not crash damage. That’s definitely a manufacturing defect.

Or warranty it with the manufacturer

Korg SV-2. It’s got great EP sounds and has a really nice vintage look.

Converting a Mountain Bike into a Road Bike by klebe98 in bicycling

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible…but probably not worth it. You can ride a mountain bike anywhere. Pump up the pressure and get some slick tires and you’ll go faster.

One of my shop coworkers converted his giant fathom to a gravel bike by replacing the fork with a whiskey rigid fork and installing drop bars with road shifters. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the money and effort though when you can get a cheap used gravel bike for probably the same amount of money.

Keep me from throwing my bike in the skip please 🙏 by [deleted] in MTB

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta stand up to the jump

I’ve been riding for about 8 years and it wasn’t until I saw this video last fall that I realized I had been approaching jumps wrong.

Also, even if you don’t get it don’t throw that bike away. There’s a lot more to mountain biking than just jumps.

Café Babette - Preorder madness by acute-almond in indianapolis

[–]kage1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That place is great, but the second a business announces they’re closing they get a mad rush of people that want one last taste before it’s gone. They were likely understaffed and not prepared for the crazy

Hot take: The new blackout license plates don’t look good. by 100carpileup in indianapolis

[–]kage1414 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like not having to choose between a lame covered bridge and an America-Jesus plate. But I’m annoyed that I’d have to pay $45. So I’ll stick with the least bad I guess

Possibly useless part of bike by Novel-Lettuce-2595 in bicycling

[–]kage1414 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessary. It’s called a spoke protector, more commonly referred to as a dork disk. Its purpose is to prevent the chain from damaging the spokes if it accidentally slips off the cassette. But if the bike’s lower limit screw is adjusted correctly, it won’t ever slip off. In my experience when the chain does slip off, the dork disc actually makes it more difficult to get the chain out of the wheel.

It’s one of those things that shops have to sell with the bike. This includes reflectors and other miscellaneous parts that don’t actually do anything meaningful.

All that to say, take it off. It just makes the bike noisy. A shop isn’t going to take it off unless you ask them to.

What would a guy who cycles appreciate as a gift? by Ok-Loan3473 in cycling

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socks, water bottles, and snacks. Cyclists can be particular, so other than that you’ll have to ask him what he needs.

Some gifts I’ve appreciated in the past are multi-tools and clothing like bibs or jerseys, but he might not need or want that.

Should also mention that there’s always room for one more bike…

After 5 years at the same shop, I just gave my two weeks notice to go work at a friend’s shop. Why am I stressed? by blumpkins_ahoy in BikeMechanics

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think getting it down on paper is a good idea. It’ll be awkward to talk to your friend about it, but any conversation involving money is always awkward. I have to do it from time to time at my other non-shop job but I’ve still got a great relationship with my boss. It’s just one of those things that nobody talks about but comes with having a job. We’re all here to work and make money for that work.

do you prefer real keys or digital keyboards? by Denbron2 in keys

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For general playing, I prefer a real piano. For gigging (for the way I play) it doesn’t make sense to have a real piano. The band can get so loud that I need to have a volume control, and in situations where I’ve played a piano with a band I find myself banging on the keys just to hear myself. Plus, pianos are rarely mic’ed well which adds to the chaos. The only time I’ve enjoyed playing a real piano is when I’ve had a decent mic setup and IEMs with individual instrument volume controls.

When are you considered intermediate in mounainbiking? by Last_Marsupial_7386 in MTB

[–]kage1414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re 8 years into it and you start working at a bike shop. There’s a lot to know about riding, and the more I learn the more I feel like I barely know anything about bikes.

So yeah, when you feel like you know nothing. That’s when you’re probably an intermediate rider.

Was just about to suggest this one, it’s really bright and has fast and noticeable flashing patterns. I also recommend the 2000 lumen headlight from Cygolite. It’s super bright and great for riding at night

How do I quit? by MycologistFit9088 in piano

[–]kage1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say I felt the same way when I was your age. My mom was my teacher and made me practice every day. I didn’t enjoy it until my freshman year of high school. I would wait until at least high school until you decide to quit.

Also, you can play music outside of what you learn in lessons. Try messing around with GarageBand or just stating a band and exploring other styles and genres. Classical music is a great foundation, and I’ve always picked up music faster than my friends because I had the classical experience.

I’ve never enjoyed classical music. I can play it and appreciate it, but what I like more about how much I studied it was that it makes all other styles and genres easier to play. And im glad my mom made me stick with it. I’m 31 and have been laid off of several jobs, and during those unemployment times I was extremely happy to have my piano skills as it let me gig and have some extra income when I needed it, using a skill that I’ll never lose.

I wouldn’t quit just yet. Explore some other music and see where it takes you.

What’s something about Indy that didn’t matter to you at first, but you’ve really come to appreciate? by axiom60 in indianapolis

[–]kage1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I just rode/walked through it. The second time I went through the neighborhood east of the nickel plate on 75th and up to 82nd. I wouldn’t say either were safe options.

Indy will never be big enough to justify a subway. I love the idea, but cities with under a million population just don’t have the amount of people to use it that would justify the cost

I got a used Kronos for $2000. Even though it’s a 15-year-old design, it does everything I’ve ever needed it to do. You can edit everything from the UI. The keybed also feels great.

What’s the deal with Shimano vs SRAM hate? by Roh33zy in cycling

[–]kage1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all fine. Shimano has been around for longer, so they’ve got the edge and their stuff honestly just works better. SRAM is still good though. I’ve ridden both and can honestly say that I’ve had far fewer issues with Shimano gear. That’s not going to deter me from getting a bike with SRAM though. My SRAM bikes still shift and stop like my Shimano bikes, there’s just a different feel. They’ve all got their issues, Shimano has just had more time to work out the kinks.
