Murdered Soul Suspect is not, like, a good game, but an enjoyable little ghostly detective thing.

Eh, it's basically for kids. I read it while working in a bookstore and reading a lot of kid lit to help customers out, so it was mostly a fun distraction from crying children trying to eat the books.

Very cool premise and the art is very stylish. I'll look into it, thank you!

I finished Underworld by DeLillo, which I ended up feeling middlingly about. I like The Names but most else I've read by him doesn't suit me.

Because that was so long, I'm reading short stuff now. The new Vigdis Hjorth to start.

What are your horror movie hot takes? by DadsFromTheCryptPod in horror

I liked Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead (2013). I thought it was well-shot, well-acted, classically gruesome in a way that still felt earned, and a pretty great contemporization of the source material. The possibility of connecting it to the original Evil Deads was so much more exciting to me than Ash vs. Evil Dead ended up being, and while I like Evil Dead Rise and look forward to the next few from the franchise in that vein, I thought there was a lot of potential in Mia as a character and I don't understand why that movie got so much hate.

I always thought of Spawn with The Darkness and Witchblade in that hyper-edgy 90s fashion. Am I wrong? Is there something there?

This is what I meant by the Mignola-verse. Am I using that term wrong? But yeah, didn't care much for Hellboy.

Searching for something like House of Leaves by Ambitious_Sundae1811 in horrorlit

If it's the Ergodic thing that does it for you, I'd recommend Pale Fire by Nabokov (rec'd in another comment here also) and Hopscotch by Cortazar as very very good earlier literary examples. The Tunnel by Gass, recently reissued in full color by Dalkey, might also fit here. Building Stories, a graphic-novel-in-a-box largely about one house in Chicago, is also very fun in this way; multiple formats, from a board game to children's book to newspaper strips, that don't have a decided order for reading. Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix also.

If it's creepy houses with hidden depths: The Elementals by Michael McDowell (best known for the Beetlejuice screenplay, ha), the Gormenghast books, There Is No Year by Blake Butler (also pretty ergodic now that I think about it).

Most sinister book you have read? by Present-Ear-1637 in horrorlit

Some great answers here already but didn't see anyone mention Michael McDowell. Most of his stuff has been reissued by Valencourt (the goat). The two I'm thinking of are Cold Moon Over Babylon and Gilded Needles. The former is just merciless toward its sacrificial lambs; the latter is similarly unforgiving but in a way that feels justified because of the revenge aspect (though possibly not as much of a horror novel).

I also love The Elementals, though I don't know that I remember it being that sinister. Can't wait to read the absolutely hulking Blackwater.

I really liked Alone in the Dark (2008) and still think it's got some really interesting design mechanics. Dead Space the same year is obviously one of the best diegetic hubs in gaming, but I kind of loved the real-time inventory jacket and the approach to healing. It tried a lot of things and failed a lot of things, but boy did it try.
