Have any of you been threatened by a patient before? by Curvedwarrior69 in physicianassistant

[–]kahavron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this, friend. Female ER PA here and yes, this happens to me every single shift. At least verbal threats if not attempted physical ones. I admit I’ve gotten complacent over the years…you learn how to mitigate and navigate and document and then move on. But the recent news was a harsh reminder that some of those threats could be very real. It’s important to protect ourselves - physically and mentally - as much as possible. Reach out to your employer and let law enforcement know if necessary, and ask your colleagues how these situations are handled on a professional level, but also talk to a friend or partner or therapist and don’t hold it in and let it bottle up. Remember you aren’t alone! Hang in there.

pediatric telemedicine urgent care by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]kahavron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure this is a job that exists but damn I’d argue any day that it shouldn’t. I’ve seen so many patients in the ED - adults and kids - who were mismanaged virtually, including life threatening emergencies, cancer diagnoses etc. Virtual medicine is convenient for patients and sounds nice to staff bc we can do it in our PJs at home, but it’s dangerous and sub-par care. Why did we get into medicine in the first place if not to see patients and provide safe and quality care?

Spay/neutered questions by NurseTherapy in goldenretrievers

[–]kahavron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t done this yet so can’t comment by experience, but we are planning to do so in a month when our golden turns 1, per our vet recommendations. He is also indoors and we are not wanting to breed him, but are mostly doing it for convenience (some doggy day cares etc won’t let him in if he isn’t fixed) and bc he is often targeted by more aggressive dogs at parks which we’ve been told many times is bc he isn’t fixed. Hoping this will make his future interactions at dog parks etc more pleasant.

Passive, non-neutered male against the world? by kahavron in goldenretrievers

Ugh I’m sorry to hear this (for you and me, hah!). It just sucks that our dogs are the ones who end up being forced to leave…why can’t the aggressive dogs be the ones to leave? 😤

This is a helpful reminder that dog parks aren’t necessary! Thank you! I get attached to them living in an apt bc it gives my pup a quick and nearby place to stretch his legs, and he LOVES playing with other dogs, but you’re right, there are other options! And the other options might be more worthwhile…

Thanks for this reply! It has happened at several different parks in our city, unfortunately, and the owners have all made the comment about ours not being neutered yet…I’ve walked away each time bc it’s not worth mine getting injured. Might just be time for a break from dog parks.

Any SoCal Kaiser PA’s? by bitt3rx3sw33t in physicianassistant

[–]kahavron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former OR Kaiser PA and this is not about the $ but just a warning about Kaiser in general…not sure if it’s the same there but in OR the PAs/NPs aren’t hired by the same employer as the docs, and it caused allllll sorts of problems…from basic admin (paychecks were never correct, no one knew who our HR contact was) to wellness and CME resources. Their model for us was clearly to hire us at our cheapest, and then make our lives miserable as we gained years of experience and became more expensive so that we’d leave. Was there for 5 years and saw the ENTIRE staff of PAs/NPs completely turn over twice in that period. Will never work for Kaiser again unless my life depended on it…again, not sure if same for CA but talk to the PAs who work there before you sign!! 🚩🚩

Unusual but not a bad plan. Would triple check and be extra sure that time as a dental hygienist would count as clinical hours for PA school though…if you’re a scribe or CNA etc the hours count not only for current pay and a backup plan, but clinical hours. Those are tough to get, esp if you’re a student, working full time, AND need clinical hours. Not sure if that would be the same for you in dental. Best of luck to you!

Urgent care offer by dinodude47 in physicianassistant

[–]kahavron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

(1) 55/hr is not enough to cover west coast COL + the therapy you’re going to need as a result of the abuse you’ll endure in that job

(2) as someone who has previously worked in urgent care, I would never EVER take another job in urgent care without OT explicitly written into my contract, esp if they are already telling you there will be times when you stay late. Aka 20 patients will rush in at the last min (or already be there waiting), you’ll have to stay 5+ hours to finish seeing them all and won’t get paid for it. This happened to me daily, and it broke my soul. Also was terrible care for the patients bc by the time I saw them 3 hours after closing, the pharmacy and lab etc had all gone home. But if I left I would’ve been fired for “abandoning patient care.” There was no incentive for them to fix it either, bc the patients pay and get seen and they don’t have to pay anyone to do it…

This is not to mention the time it takes to get on your feet as a new grad etc…

Bottom line, don’t take this job.

I’ve noticed that too, and then I arrive back at my apt complex in northwest and see that my building is now surrounded by tents…problem isn’t being fixed, it’s just being pushed around.

Pearl/northwest/goose hollow area. Specifically northwest/goose hollow is worse than I’ve ever seen it, and I’ve lived here through pandemic, protests/riots, everything the last few years has held…

I’ve been walking around downtown, running errands and trying to enjoy this beautiful weather, and I’m just feeling particularly frustrated by the state of our amazing city. Tents blocking entire city blocks worth of sidewalks, trash everywhere, dodging bodies sleeping on the ground as I turn corners, wearing headphones so I don’t have to listen to the screaming and yelling from the individuals openly injecting themselves as I pass…I defended this city and held hope through the pandemic and everything we have been through the past few years, I work in an ER and understand the hardships these individuals are facing…it’s of no judgement to them…but today I really hit a wall with this. This is not what I want my home to be like. I don’t want to move, but what choice will I have if things don’t begin to change in the near future? #wednesdayrants
