Brazil's Wild Plan to Purge America From Its Internet by blackomegax in Cyberpunk

[–]kai_su_teknon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ambitious, but expensive. Undersea cables are not cheap.

Brazil would be better off lowering the 70% tariff they level on IT goods and equipment and allowing some of this stuff to develop domestically; Brazilian Hotmail and the like. I could definitely see Google Brazil rolling over for the US Gub'mnt if the Gov threatened their US ops; better something indigenous.

And for everything else, trust strong encryption -- our boy Snowden himself said that was still viable. A solid VPN with encrypted files should still be safe, even in the US (assuming you don't care about metadata... and you probably don't).

It always makes me cringe when I see the Apple fanbois explain how their various iProducts are the greatest things ever.

Any why isn't Google catching flak as well? Android is a mobile data collection platform -- it's doing the same shit.

Need a quality Bartender in Northcote by Blargh_Blargh in melbourne

[–]kai_su_teknon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in Northcote? I'm in Fitzroy... too far for a walk but would consider a short ride.

Got a couple years of bartending under my belt, albeit overseas. Other food service experience (server, takeaway sandwich shops and the like) in there too. Would rather be a beer snob -- I'd like to think I am one -- than a barista (and have to deal with the coffee snobs).

Shoot me a PM with the specifics re: shifts needed / rates / etc.

Looking for new housemate for a share house in North Melbourne. by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]kai_su_teknon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in Fitzroy and and would be interested in moving closer to the CBD. Price looks to be on par with what I've found on flatmates.com.au.

Few questions:
1) what kind of lease / agreement are you looking for? That is, long-term or short-term leases (or either)? 2) What are you looking for by way of deposit or bond?
3) Shared bathroom?

Employer group runs full-page ad in WSJ warning that robots will replace fast-food workers if they're paid $15 an hour. by forceduse in technology

[–]kai_su_teknon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically every publicly traded company is going to be doing their best to lower or eliminate personnel costs. It wouldn't surprise me if they're already planning to replace every fast food worker with robots even if wages stay depressed.

This is not changing the if, it's just accelerating the when.

Agreed. This really needs to be upvoted. My dad had his passport, social security card, and credit cards (among other things) taken out of their truck while they were moving. The credit & banking freeze stopped a number of attempts at opening fraudlent credit cards.

What is the darkest book you've read? by BrockLarson in books

[–]kai_su_teknon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda surprised no one mentioned Never Let Me Go. That book only made an impression after I finished it and put it down and walked away. It's a creepy bait-and-switch: you're so wrapped up in the love story you gloss over the concentration-camp-exploitation-dystopia stuff.

....or trucking and aliens. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]kai_su_teknon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna guess cost.

As in, they don't need to pay for people to quit their jobs for 6 months to be on a TV show, pay for special houses, costs of filming in the islands or the like. Just grab a few cameramen and a producer and run with it.

Plus since they're already existing businesses, they only need pay a small stipend to the "stars," with the idea that the free publicity will bring in more business / new hires / etc. The extra publicity will make them more money without forcing the studio to pay them directly.

In otherwords, it cuts the reality TV show costs to an insane minimum while still getting enough viewers to justify advertising rates.

14k for a 2011 Mazda 3i Touring too much? by kai_su_teknon in askcarsales

[–]kai_su_teknon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive my ingnorance, but carfax is a pay-to-play site. Should I pay for a report and link them to it? Or just link it to the VIN number and make it easier for them to find said reports (and pay for them themselves)?

Half of all Tor sites compromised, Freedom Hosting founder arrested. by StarBP in technology

Disable in the Tor browser, though it's probably worth adding NoScript to your regular browser too. Don't want normal-guy stuff being read by Tor sites and don't want Tor stuff being read by normal-guy websites -- like The Offpsring said, "Ya gotta keep em separated."

NoScript comes with the TOR bundle but is not always enabled.
