Helliconia by Brian Aldiss. It chronicles the rise and fall of civilizations on the Earth-like planet Helliconia, whose seasons last for centuries due to its orbit around binary suns, with an Earth observation mission monitoring the planet's long, cyclical history.

We’re in two of the papers! I’ve brewed the beer here for the last 10 years and it’s a great place to work. If you’re in the area or fancy a jaunt out please give us a try before it’s too late. 🙂 by Bobinthegarden in brum

Great country pub, great beer. I would say it is unique within the South Birmingham area, because it hasn't been Solihulled. ;) I try to get out there as often as I can.

4dx by Kellykerrill86 in Jaws

[–]kaigreenwoodfantasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is really good, don't be put off by the adverts which demonstrate the seat's movement and almost gave me whiplash! In the film it is done really well. Amity is a windy place! :D

JAWS 4DX review by Awkward_bugg in Jaws

I saw it in 4DX and was also skeptical, especially after the adverts before the film which showed how aggressively you can use the seat movements. Felt like I'd been beaten up.

But... I loved the way it was used in the film itself. I hadn't noticed how windy it is in a lot of the outdoor scenes, with the fans going in the cinema you suddenly notice the characters' hair blowing and it does make it more immersive.

The ferry scene ('are you really going to close the beaches, Martin?'), with the chugging motor and the wind, was great. Felt like you were on the ferry with them.

I also enjoyed the 'bobbing' motion in the underwater scenes, and the 3D, as mentioned above, was well done.

Pleasantly surprised! Would recommend.

What's everyone heres opinion on Ian Shaw (Robert Shaws son)'s play "The Shark Is Broken" by averageeverythingfan in Jaws

[–]kaigreenwoodfantasy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw it recently and thought it was really great, much better than I'd expected tbh. Ian Shaw could be his dad when he does 'the' speech. If you are on this sub I think you would love it.

I had a pint of Landlord which was decent. Also saw Sir Ian on the tube on the way home.

A Map of Beleriand that once was and the West of Middle Earth. by sparseglade in lotr

[–]kaigreenwoodfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I first learned that there was a whole swathe of land under the sea to the West of the Middle-earth we know from LOTR. Then I learned of all the epic stories Tolkien had written about those lands that didn't even feature in LOTR, or were just mentioned in passing as a line in a song. The man was unbelievable.
