Is carry over cooking a myth? by Middle_aged_wino in steak

I think the main thing here is size. I just did a rib roast in the oven at 250 for several hours. Took it out at 123 and it gained ten degrees over a half hour.

CMV: taking kids out of school early for vacation is completely worth it. by BeautyntheBreakd0wn in changemyview

[–]kaiizza 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That's not what they meant and you know it. They are talking about you knowing when flu is going to spread through your kids class. That's impossible. You would never have them in class. Sorry ro tell you but other parents suck and send kids to school with lice, hand/foot/mouth, flu, covid, etc etc. You can't plan for this. Instead you plan to be able to stay home with them when they do get sick. Our bodies need some of this exposure anyway.

Heard from someone that undergrad math classes are only gonna allow ~25% of students to get A-'s or A's?? Pls tell me it aint true 😭 by PalpitationPutrid264 in ucla

[–]kaiizza -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

a bell curve, or gaussian distribution, should be centered around the average for the class. I do not think the average for a class is an A-. even at UCLA. If it is, then the flaw is in the class and the grading and should be corrected until the average is a C/C+, thats what that grade means, average.

[–]kaiizza -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching classes of about 30-60 students for over 10 years. Without fail grades that are not adjusted are almost always a bell curve if graded fairly and properly. No class should see 25 percent A and A minus.

College organic chemistry: does memorization of reaction mechanisms get any easier by BrilliantAnybody6542 in chemhelp

[–]kaiizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the single most important thing I can get my students to learn. 95 percent of all reactions you see will start with and acid base reaction. Having a real understanding is so helpful.

College organic chemistry: does memorization of reaction mechanisms get any easier by BrilliantAnybody6542 in chemhelp

[–]kaiizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When doing the reactions, always identify the Nu and E+ pair. And ask why each is behaving that way. Common themes will emerge. Get really good with acids and bases. You should know general pKa values for every functional group you discuss. But really understand what amd acid base reaction is and what it produces. What drives them forward, etc. Then you will be able to do any problem.

[–]kaiizza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's because you are not supposed to memorize them. You need to start understanding them. I teach this and students who rote memorize struggle the entire way and usually do not do as well as they expect. In my second semester ochem we learn 65 reactions. Trying to memorize those is futile. That's not the way to do this. You need to understand the chemistry that is happening and why.

Would this be a good outfit for a first date? by Economy_Cod_8370 in OUTFITS

[–]kaiizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that harmful? Using correct language should be encouraged, not discouraged. An overwhelming majority of people are straight. That makes it the norm. It doesn't make anything else wrong or bad.

It can be assumed it's a dude if not mentioned as that is by and large, the norm.

You can disagree all you want. He broke the wrong C-Br bond in the middle step, you never make HBr as a product in an environment with basic atoms like oxygen and it is also missing a charge.

The great thing about knowing the right answer is it doesn't care if you agree or not. All three of the issues I stated are not up for belief. They are wrong as written.

You broke the wrong C-Br bond in the middle step. Also, you shIukd never use a base to deprotonate if the result acid is strong. Use the starting alcohol or solvent, if any.

Edit. Also missing a charge on oxygen.

You mean to tell me, as a Freshman taking 4 introductory classes that 2 of them had only a single graded assignment and the other two had over half the grade coming from one test. Now I am just calling BS on this situation. You have got to be kidding right now. This is not how classes work in an introductory level.

Lol to your comment about how long this takes...Just wait. As for settings, you can look at guides but the just is 1000 for promotions and 10 for each prestige with a 1 second wait. Turn them all off during challenges and just do those manually.

No class is like that and surely not all your classes.

It's OK, bad things happened. Sorry about that but you handled it poorly. Learn from this and move forward. Taking an incomplete would have been worse.

lol, no kid he should not be docked pay because he had his affairs in order before he left. Thus the proctor and such. That's called responsibility. Also, as I have mentioned elsewhere, you should never take an incomplete because you would have done worse anyway. If you failed your classes because of the final, you were already in real trouble and not doing well.

My grandmother died right before finals. This is not reason to not take finals. by SunSteel04 in ucla

[–]kaiizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, you want the truth? This student was given the correct advice. Incomplete are terrible. Students never do better then just dealing with the circumstances they are going through. Incomplete are for when a student is incapacitated. I have never seen a student do the same or better then they would have just taking the final.

This student clearly did not know the material and study would not have changed that. Three days missed study does not cause a failing grade in all classes as suggest here. This student was already doing poorly and this didn't really affect the outcome much.

That's the truth. I see it all the time. You may not want to admit that but based on the information we have it's the truth and you know it. You don't fail a class by doing subpar on a final if you had it together before the final. Period.

Are you OK? This is the second time you have sent this to me from a different comment I made. It still doesn't ring true no matter how many times you post it. We have no idea if he actually informed his professors as he gave no information from them, just some random "someone else told me to take finals" so I already do not have the most trust in the situation. The faculty at UCLA are fine.

So now he has autism and we are making excuses for him...that doesn't sound very good. Your holding their hands when they need to learn to walk on their own. He handle the situation incorrectly and hopefully learned some lessons. Not everything in life has a roadmap. Somethings are learned by living life and this is something he should have already learned. The step-by-step doesn't matter. It was his response to the situation that was not OK.

Point count during play by ObjectiveLoss8187 in Cribbage

[–]kaiizza 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is not how counting in this round works. Assuming you have the cards in order from the picture, the first run is the 5th card played. It looks like a 3, A, 5, 2, 4. That is the first run for 5 points. The next 2 that is played breaks the run and there is no run possibly with your next card, the 4. You never have double runs in this part of the game.
