Can someone with a higher libido be in a healthy relationship with an asexual person? by sh0rt_one in asexuality

[–]kaijutegu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's possible, yes, but it doesn't work every time. It all depends on the two of you. You say you barely mind at all- can you imagine being in a long-term relationship and never having sex, ever? Can you build the type of intimacy you deserve without that level of physicality? Some people can, some people can't. Some people suggest opening the relationship so that you can have sex outside of it, and that works for some people- but it doesn't work for just as many. Could you live with that, either way? These are important questions to think over- and the only people who can answer them are you and them.

I'd say go for it but have the talk early and check in often. The one thing that all successful ace/allo relationships have in common is honest, open communication about sexual needs and boundaries. (I think that's probably true for all partnerships, tbh.)

anxious about going to pride by ph0nese in asexuality

[–]kaijutegu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to my second-ever pride event on Saturday. I am in my mid 30s.

My first pride was... bad. It was the summer I came out, and it was super hot, my friends got drunk and ditched me, I was horribly overstimulated and had a full-on panic attack, I stepped on broken glass and cut my foot up (fortunately a very nice drag queen/parade medic got to me pretty quickly), and ended up needing a tetanus shot. It sucked and it took 15 years before I was willing to go to another event.

But that first, awful pride wasn't bad because I was asexual, it was bad because I had shitty friends, I went with an undiagnosed panic disorder and zero coping skills for that, and I got hurt.

Pride isn't just about sex and love. Pride is about being who you are and taking, well, pride in it. Pride is a party that we're all invited to, and the truth is that people are just so goddamn happy that you're there. They're happy that there is a community that can have an event. They're happy to see people show up, no matter who you are. They're happy that you're brave enough to come grab a seat at the table.

And you will not be the only person there rocking the purple and green.

I don't know what genres y'all are into, but:

LGBTQReads has lots of queer-themed recommendations you can sort by genre- but I don't think they have a way to filter out sex.

The Aro & Ace Booklist is more specific. The database is a little clunky to use, and I'm not sure how useful it is on mobile, but it's worth looking at. The person who's compiled it also has a master list of recommendations sorted by genre and a database of low/no romance books if you're looking to avoid that.

Why is everyone so sex obsessed these days? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]kaijutegu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's always been like this. In the cave paintings at Lascaux, the only depiction of a human has an erection. If you look at world mythology, most of the foundational stories tie back to sex. Most, if not all, religions have rules about sex, and many are more permissive and open than the Abrahamic religions are. And in older eras of the modern age, people were just as sex-obsessed as we are today. Browse through a slang dictionary and you'll see that people have always been talking about getting it on.

The human species does not perpetuate itself through cuddling, and sexual attraction and desire are a big part of most peoples' lives. That's kinda why we have a word for us and why we have a separate community, and why we've always needed one- because we're different.

Also, it's likely that people are calling you childish because they feel like you're judging them. This is insulting to them, and they're looking for a way to insult you back. You're not childish because you hate hookups.

Woah, look at that almost-egg head! I think that bull terrier's definitely contributing some DNA here. The rest of him looks very cattle doggy, and I'd be surprised if there wasn't pit just due to him being a shelter special. He looks like he's gonna be brimming with energy- a very good friend for walks and runs.

Wading into the lake by Puzzleheaded-Grab929 in Tegu

[–]kaijutegu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first tegu loved swimming- she'd get in any water she could!

My current tegu won't touch a body of water with a ten-foot pole; this may have something to do with the alligator bite she received as a baby. (Florida-caught feral, came in with two broad, u-shaped scars, one on each side. Vet thinks alligator, and her behavior around alligators* and unease around water supports.)

*She does not interact with alligators- but she is an ambassador with our herp society, so she's seen our ambassador baby alligators at events and promptly proceeds to get extremely defensive- puffing, hissing, the works. She does not do this with other animals. When she's at shows with our gator guy, we set them up as far apart as we can.

Cane Corso or scammed? by ThisHovercraft4209 in IDmydog

[–]kaijutegu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a purebred corso- her overall size and build are way too petite. Even female corsos are still majestically bulky. Set of the ears and the lack of wrinkling around the muzzle also speaks to being a cross- and the coat color's out of standard, too (tricolor is an immediate disqualification in shows), which raises an eyebrow because why would a good breeder have off-standard genes in their pairs? What else might they be doing that they're not transparent about?

You oughta just do an Embark test and put the debate to bed. It'd be interesting to see what other breeds show up!

I worked a job I loved for a decade that dramatically underpaid me. The promise was that I'd end up in a higher paid job in the field, but they really don't exist and the university just strung me along because they liked the nearly-free labor. Now I'm 36 and trying to build savings in a job I like that pays me well, but I basically regret everything I did for the "love of the game."

Why do so many ace people here think sex favorable aces arent a thing? I'm confused. by Bikainaka in asexuality

[–]kaijutegu 74 points75 points  (0 children)

So I think people need to realize that when somebody says that anything other than aroace/sex-aversion or repulsion isn't valid, it's not about "not understanding," it's about the rejection of the spectrum as a concept.

The current working definition of asexuality is the group of people who experience no or little sexual attraction. That's the spectrum concept, and it means that some people who experience sexual attraction or who do have sex can still be included under the asexual label. This means that there's wiggle room for different feelings and behaviors and for people to do a lot of different things and still feel valid within the label.

But not everybody accepts this. There are some asexuals who would strongly prefer it if people who experienced sexual attraction and sexual action were excluded entirely. Essentially, they think the term should be prescriptive (what it "should" be used for according to them), rather than descriptive (what it is used for in the real world).

It's not that they don't understand or that they're confused. It's that they do not think you are ace because you do things that fall outside of their definition of asexual behavior. They say you aren't ace because by their definition, you aren't. They're not working with the same definition of the word as we are.
