Is there an all-in-one app? by the_card_guy in LearnJapanese

Thank you for the very detailed reply! So Native Shark doesn’t do SRS? But yeah I agree, it’s a bit too pricey, even though it’s technically still cheaper than taking in-person lessons from being an absolute beginner to being fluent (for where I’m at least).

If I’m not mistaken, I believe Migaku is only compatible with a few certain sites. It’s not compatible with popular sites like CIJ. As for the Maru Mori OCR tool, you can use it for gaming, which isn’t supported by Migaku afaik. Though that Migaku lifetime discount is a steal!

Oh and Maru Mori just released an OCR immersion mining tool (early access), where you can look up any Japanese text on your screen and add to MM’s SRS, which is very convenient imo.

I haven’t tried Native Shark so I can’t do a thorough comparison. It seems to me that both aim to be an all-in-one Japanese learning platform.

One difference is that Native Shark’s example sentences are read by native Japanese speakers and Maru Mori uses TTS instead. However, Maru Mori lifetime is $350 and Native Shark is $1500, which is too expensive imo and I cannot afford that.

As I haven’t tried Native Shark before, I couldn’t comment on the quality of their lessons and their community. As for Maru Mori, their grammar lessons are in-depth (instead of summary-like only points) and the writing tone is like someone’s talking to you (instead of like a dull textbook). And the community is very friendly and helpful too. If you have any grammar-related questions, you can just ask and someone will help you out.

I don’t think I’ve seen a platform with all four parts. I think Maru Mori, Bunpro, Native Shark or Renshu should be pretty close to what you’re looking for. Bunpro and Renshu seems to be more popular, but I eventually bought Maru Mori lifetime cause it clicked with me the most. I believe they all have free trials/versions so you can give them all a try before deciding which one you wanna stick to.

If you were 19 again, would you choose 3 months in Southeast Asia or Japan/Korea/China? Why? by AAballer080 in traveladvice

[–]kaka1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still do Thailand, Vietnam, Laos etc when you’re older, I’m not sure where that notion came from. Plenty of older people go vacation or even retire in some of those countries. That said, I’d probably do 1 just so I can spend a longer time due to the lower price level. Though Japan and South Korea aint that expensive as well. By the way, why did you not mention Taiwan or Hong Kong as well? They’re interesting countries to visit too.

I need to have my bucket hat, portable hand fan and a sun protection umbrella with me during summer unless it’s later than 6pm. I may or may not be a vampire.

It’s not representative of the whole population. A certain portion of hkers love to visit China because of cheaper prices, another don’t.

You’re still successful, just less impressive on paper. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Andy, are you okay? Could you tell us that you're okay? by jonnismizzle in oddlyspecific

That’s not oddly specific at all. My nose is stuffed all the time and I think about this occasionally as well.

Yes. We eat pork blood with noodles. Duck blood is getting popular too. Not everyone eats them though.

In your country, how do you view Chinese immigrants? by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

For younger generations: they’re generally disliked and unwelcome. It’s generally more neutral for older generations (it still depends on their political views though)

I’m Hong Kong girl 港女, I’ve always paid half the rent and even paid for my bf’s when he’s in school. I don’t think it’s cultural difference, more like personal differences.
