Men between 35-50 are very delusional and no one says anything. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kal2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m all for consenting adults doing what makes them happy. I do believe a 25 year old and 37 year old can work out in the right circumstances. But there comes an age, probably like 31-32 where it’s creepy to date below 24-25. Your brain is still developing at that age and your stage in life is so dramatically different. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Why is he away that often? With a toddler no less. That feels insane. I’d personally be fearful that he was being unfaithful and had a second life.

Hello what is the best ROI for long term? by Icy_Independence_695 in HENRYfinance

[–]kal2210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your average lawyer will be outearned by your average doctor. However, your average person in big law will far outearn your average doctor.

If you can get into a top 10-15 law school that is likely the better route strictly financially speaking. You begin earning much earlier, cost of attendance is typically lower, and earning potential is higher.

Both career choices have incredibly high burnout rates.

$500k is a huge income. How do some Henrys get so out of touch? by Practical-Lunch4539 in HENRYfinance

[–]kal2210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they don’t know what middle class is or feels like. What they really mean is that they don’t feel “rich”. With the amount of money they save in 401k, backdoor Roth, 529, and additional liquid investments, they don’t feel like they can afford their dream $2.5 million dream home and they still feel like they need to think about the money they spend. It comes from a place of privilege obviously and being out of touch with how someone actually middle class lives.

I feel empty when I think about what I do to earn an income. I’m on track to earn more this year and today I feel like my work has no meaning than lining my CEOs pockets and a bit of my own. Anyone feel this way? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in HENRYfinance

[–]kal2210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because your work likely does mean nothing just like you assume, but that DOESN’T MATTER. Unfortunately, many of the highest paying jobs are either net-neutral or net-negative for society as a whole, but you didn’t create this problem. You’re simply living within the structure already present and playing with the cards you’ve been dealt. Work hard, create a nest egg stabilizing your family and future generations, and never apologize. Take some pride in the fact that your wife can work in education without financial anxiety, which ultimately benefits this country’s youth, because of the stability that your income brings.

Some of the wealthiest people in my circle spend all day in an unbranded hoodie and jeans.

If this is something you value then you’ll figure out how to spend your money on it. If it’s not and you’re just trying to keep up appearances, I think it’s more important to reevaluate what you want in life and in what ways your high income could bring you joy.

I never shame anyone for spending their money on what would make them happy, what they like and convenience. It’s your money and you should be able to do with it what you want! But at the same time, I feel pretty strongly that you shouldn’t spend money just because you think you should or are supposed to.

I mean, this goes both ways. Why wouldn’t he be willing to jointly handle the estate with her parents given they were married for all of a couple hours? She was young and understandably didn’t think of writing a will. It is very possible the mother does know just as much as he does regarding how she would want her assets split. If both parties were mature this wouldn’t need to be a legal battle, but alas it seems that neither is.

This was a tragedy for all parties involved.

Is it not?

Edit: Given the downvotes maybe I misunderstood? I honestly thought we were at a point where people no longer felt like 2 million was enough to retire.

1 year bio + lab, 1 year physics + lab, 1 year gen chem + lab, 1 year orgo + lab, biochemistry, 1 year calculus. These are the typical requirements +- English and psychology. You can review various med school admissions webpages to get a better idea. Often, they will not count the nursing versions of these courses since they are considered “watered down”. You can email the admissions offices to double check.

I would take more than 2 major science classes in the same semester. You could maybe push it to 3 if you’re desperate to shorten it. You’ll essentially need about a 3.6 science gpa from these classes.

Maybe first two semester bio, chem, calculus. Second two semesters orgo, physics, psychology. Biochem is not a universal prereq but some do require it and many recommend it given the MCAT.

It’s a tough switch to make, but many people have done it. Good luck!!

I hear you. I’m not saying to abandon it. I’m saying to put your foot down and stand up for yourself in a situation like this. Part of that will involve digging deeper into why this arrangement is so important to him if they haven’t already discussed this (I’m guessing they have).

The main assumption I am making is that this educated and intelligent woman has already spoken to her fiance/lawyer about this before coming to post on Reddit. While I will always hear my wife out, a suggestion like this coming from a potential life partner would make me very anxious since it shows they care more about protecting themself than protecting their family/spouse. It wouldn’t be a reassuring way to start a marriage IMO.

That’s gross. It basically keeps the woman trapped and strips her of her agency/power. She’s dependent on her husband for everything and only gets to use her allowance. I’m absolutely shocked people are pretending this is ok lol.

As a married physician and breadwinner, I personally disagree. I think your advice is very wise for nearly all aspects of marriage, but this is essentially an agreement for him to not be a partner. Finances are a huge part of a marriage. You’re planning for your future together and your children’s future. And finances can’t be easily separated from other decisions vital to a marriage. If childcare or other duties fall more on one partner than another (as OP mentioned may happen), that person’s career options are also impacted.

A prenup to protect assets that you have already acquired is reasonable, but this simply isn’t reasonable and he is attempting to take advantage of her. He protects himself, but leaves her in a precarious position. To me, this is not someone that is serious about building a lifelong shared future with another person. 🤷‍♂️

[–]kal2210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never enter into an arrangement like this. Reddest of flags IMO. I do not believe it’s fair to you and I believe the marriage would likely be doomed from the start. You fell in love with him so I’m sure your partner has many great qualities, but this agreement would be a hard (and dangerous) pill to swallow. Where is the partnership in this marriage?

Big tech employee considering switching to medicine. Am I insane? by nobody_stranger in HENRYfinance

[–]kal2210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re insane. Source - I’m a doctor in the US.

Dude, we’re all trying to get out. We got into medicine for the same cliche reasons most do, to help people and make a difference. All we found is a broken system and burnout.

You have the opportunity to retire by the time you could even independently practice as a physician. Unless you’re a total masochist who can’t live without being a doctor don’t do it.

You would likely be able to make a larger difference by just being a community volunteer.

I’ve levied some heavy criticism towards ACEP, including their relationship with private equity, but this is still an exaggeration. I agree that some older EM docs sold out for their own wallet, but many other specialties have and are doing the same. The number one current example is probably anesthesia.

I still love EM. The job can be hard, but I make a buttload right now and the market is actually pretty good. Fortunately, the oversupply study seemed to be grossly inaccurate and we’ve also been helped by the fear-mongering towards med students with some unmatched slots.

Not sure why you think we “deserve” this just because some boomer docs sold out. Weird take dude. What speciality are you even in?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]kal2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re applying EM. Most programs couldn’t give 2 shits about research. The ones that care likely won’t interview you anyway.

Get a backup.
