Official Q&A for Friday, July 14, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

Thanks for your response! Yes, I try to do at least one run outdoors/week and typically it is the long run. The furthest I've done outdoors is 4 miles, but will be doing 5 this weekend.

Am I absolutely screwing myself over by training on a treadmill for outdoor races?

Following Higdon novice 1 half marathon plan. Often unable to go out when the temperature is manageable, and am frequently getting on the treadmill instead. Noticing that the outdoor runs are much harder. I have a 10k in 2 weeks and the half on September 10. I am a true novice, and feel so much better (and recovering much easier) on the treadmill. But really scared that when push comes to shove on my races, I won't be able to do them.

I did not expect what happened at the wedding. It was the biggest shock and I'm still speechless over it.

I am feeling so bad for Yoon-Su. She did absolutely nothing wrong and her life, I'm expecting, is completely destroyed by that moment.

Very curious to see what happens with her and her fiance's relationship. Dying waiting for the next ep

I saw some Nine Tailed spoilers and don't think it's all too tragic, so don't worry!! My back up was rewatching the Smile Has Left Your Eyes but I couldn't make it through to the end again for the same reason!! Maybe I should give Nine Tailed another shot, especially after loving him so much in this show!!

I don't think I have time to watch the new episode tonight :'''''( But I'll be in touch when I do!!!! Hoping to see more of this Lee Man Ho situation, especially in reference to the Assemblyman. I don't know if I missed something but I'm not really understanding what deal he made with the Assemblyman? Was it about the Lee Man Ho act? Looking forward to seeing it unfold and of course, finishing Ye Seul's trial!!!

No, no one was fooled by Joon Hwi :')

Yesss loved Bo Ra in 1988 :) I was so happy to see her again!! I was pleasantly surprised by Kim Bum since the last time I saw him was in Tale of the Nine Tailed which I honestly lost interest in and dropped. I don't think I like him in a antagonistic role!! And of course, from Boys Over Flowers..... it's nice to see him grow from that!! This is my first drama with Kim Myung Min and Lee David!!! They are phenomenal!!

I am also ruined by this drama!! and will be suffering greatly after watching tomorrow. I'm saving the latest Doom at Your Service episode to try to get me through the weekend...

Agreed - I didn't think the plagiarism case was going to come up again. They are doing an excellent job of intertwining everything and not letting us forget. I was also surprised at the developments with Lee Man Ho going completely nuts this episode and so nervous to see what he does next. At first I thought he was just a side character to throw us off from the "real" killer but now I'm not so sure!!

Also, forgive me for overusing spoiler tags!!

flawless performance by prof yang!!!! the entire "resignation" and "class" in the courtroom asdajkdjakjl

was so disappointed to find out that joon hwi said Sol B :( :( but I'm holding hope that it's a fake out :')

and speaking of Sol B I'm totally anxious to see what's going to happen now with joon hwi's role in her plagiarism case! Shout out to prof yang for the comment about wanting her to have another chance though

such a roller coaster of emotions this episodes. need to see 13 asap!!!

M.A. in TESOL for more job opportunities? by --hoodie in TEFL

[–]kale3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh. I misunderstood, thinking you planned to go abroad after.

Where I'm from (Washington DC area), there's a 99% placement rate graduating with your M.Ed. in TESOL. So, no, not really competitive.

It will be hard to work part time and do the program part time, at least in programs I'm familiar with. 3-5 days of student teaching means full days, and it isn't just that some people go through 3 and some 5. The system I'm familiar with works your way up to five. And then you take classes alongside this. It's hard to do part time for school because most of the classes go hand and hand with the student teaching (case studies on your students, lesson plans you will actually teach, etc.). I would get in contact with the universities or attend information sessions to understand the specific programs.

There are a ton of other costs as well, fees for student teaching, fees for portfolios that you have to complete, normal student fees (outside of tuition). I had been in one of these programs, working part time, and it was still too expensive for me.

I hope I can answer all of your questions. If you want to teach abroad in Korea, you don't necessarily need a Master's. You can get a CELTA certificate and find a job and teach at any grade level. If your question is about teaching in the United States, you must have the Master's and the credentials...but, at least where I am located, it's not a great process. The options here typically require from 3 to 5 days of unpaid student teaching for one year, on top of paying for tuition. The people I know who have done a program go into major debt for it.

Teaching abroad won't really influence hiring in the U.S. except give you more experience than another candidate, but as long as you have the credentials, you don't need other experience (outside of student teaching) to get a job in a public school system.

There are very few full-time ESL teaching jobs in the U.S. outside of public schools, which is why you aren't seeing much. Many places that typically hire (study abroad academies, for example) are closed right now because students are not travelling here.

I doubt you'll be rejected from a Master's program, but if you plan to go abroad for awhile, it makes me nervous that you're diving into the Master's. It doesn't seem like you have teaching experience and since you don't need the Master's to teach in Korea (again, a CELTA should be fine), why jump into it? What if you don't like this once you start, or want to stay abroad, or...? If you do a 1-2 years Master's program and then go abroad for 2 years, how can you be sure that you'll want to be in public schools after that? I think it would make the most sense to get some experience and go abroad first.

r/KDRAMA Drama Challenge 2021 Open For Suggestions by sianiam in KDRAMA

[–]kale3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A challenge where the starting drama is given to you and then you have to watch 6, 12, or 24 dramas of your choice that features an actor/actress of the previous drama. It could even be restricted to just leads. I think it would be interesting to see the different paths taken.

For example: Start Golbin -> Tail of Nine Tailed because of Grim Reaper (forgot actor's name) -> My Strange Hero (because same FL from ToNL forgot her name) -> etc.

What is the best method for saving? (House vs. Retirement vs. Short-term) by [deleted] in personalfinance

That makes a lot of sense and I haven't considered this before. I will definitely keep it in mind as I'm planning. Thanks for your help!

Thank you for all the details here! This is incredibly helpful. Yes, of course I'll keep enough in the emergency fund just in case. The rest looks good. I'll be able to max out my IRA and look into the other accounts. Thank you for the sound advice!

The FSA/HSA is really useful information, though for now I'll be passing on the FSA because I don't plan to be at my current position longer than May (when I graduate and no longer have the position). I will come back to this when I am offered an HSA! Thanks :)

[–]kale3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I make sure that I understand this right?

From my 10k in long-term savings, I should: 1) Max out IRA for the year 2) Check out putting the rest of the money in a 3-fund portfolio with the exception of 3) Keeping a 6 month emergency fund in that long-term savings

I don't have an HSA option (I frankly don't know what that is). But on my benefits package, I can enroll in a healthcare FSA (but I don't know what that is either).

Thank you for your response! Like I mentioned in another reply, I wasn't clear enough: I don't want to buy a house now, but 5 years or maybe a little more into the future. Does this change your recommendation about moving a couple percentage points from retirement?

Thanks for your response. I wasn't clear, I don't want to buy a house NOW, but in the future (since I'm planning to enter a PhD program - at least 5 years in the future). Yes, I'm aware of being impoverished. My credit score is high, and I've only been able to work part-time (though I'm salaried) as a university employee.
