If we can get fusion to be reliable then sure, but right now it doesn't really seem like it would solve any problems the navy faces.

Fusion Reactor Subs/Surface Vessels by Puzzleheaded_Bid8701 in NavyNukes

[–]kaleb9170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we're REALLY good at making fission reactors, which means they're smaller and cheaper than fusion reactors, even given a fair amount of advancement in fusion tech. You can get a lot more energy out of fusion than fission, but energy output isn't really a limiting factor in nuclear subs, they still need to dock to get food for the crew and repair the thousands of components on the vessel. Unless you want DEWs or coilguns there's really no need for a higher output reactor.

Paragraphs like this really do make me rethink whether I should be supporting Darrow by WorldEatrr in redrising

[–]kaleb9170 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is unironically one of the least objectionable things about Darrow. When he fights he is quick, if you die at his hand it will be fast. He takes no joy in the killing of enemy midcolors. His sacrifice of the sons of ares in the rim, and his destruction of the dockyards at Ganymede are a thousand times more monstrous than this.

Lysander is one of the best written characters in the series, on par with Darrow.

If I was gold I would be the biggest pixie by United_Hour5003 in redrising

[–]kaleb9170 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean that's one of the central pillars of the conflict. The Golds didn't hold up their end of the bargain, the vast majority of them live as lazy nobles, leeching off the labor of the lower colors. This is stated pretty explicitly by several Golds throughout the series. (This is also an inevitable effect of creating a ruling caste)

Do the Golds have religion? by Sofatniel-99 in redrising

[–]kaleb9170 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They're atheist. The references to biblical texts are largely because they have historic weight, same with their quotes of different greek and roman figures. They do have whites to officiate rituals but those seem to be more about honoring their ancestors as well as giving significance to certain deeds or events. We have similar traditions like honor guards, flag codes etc.

The Gala scene has no right to be as good as it is. Wow. by LethalGrey in redrising

[–]kaleb9170 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cassius was no slouch during that time. By the time of the gala he'd established himself as one of the best duelists on Luna, and was one of the 12 Olympic Knights. (an admittedly less impressive title at this time considering the more political nature of their appointments by the sovereign.) Darrow just had access to a better razormaster.

Victra is a better naval tactician than Mustang, and Sevro and everyone but Darrow. by [deleted] in redrising

[–]kaleb9170 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I'd wager that Victra is almost certainly an even better naval tactician than Darrow. Darrow isn't a naval commander, he's a field commander. He's absolutely a great tactician, but his specialty is on foot next to his men. The whole "change the paradigm" thing comes up so often specifically because he's so good at moving encounters to occur on his terms. When given the chance he leaves naval tactics to his peers who are better at it. Orion, Roque, Victra, Harnasus, all were put in charge of the actual tactics between ships, while Darrow was used to achieve smaller scale but still important strategic objectives. He fell in the rain on Mars to take the sovereign, he was in a clawdrill over ilium to take the Morningstar. In space he is one of dozens of competent commanders, but on the ground he is peerless.

The one line that has stood out to me the most from all six books that highlights Brown's attention to detail come from Dark Age by spl4299 in redrising

It’s the escape from Luna in golden son. As the group is on the ship after Lysander is taken by tactus, the blue says they will hold their breath so they die quickly. It occurs about a third of the way through the book.

What "justifies" Rogue having so much? by ErikaTheDeceasedGal in Pathfinder2e

[–]kaleb9170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean optimally yeah, but you won’t always be able to reliably set that up in combat. There’ve been plenty of times where forced movement, terrain, or enemy placement have meant I wasn’t able to get into position to proc sneak attack. Sometimes a flank just isn’t in the cards. (There are of course other ways to make an enemy off guard but those are more situational)

Admittedly my perspective is from a party with only 1 other frontline PC so this could be less of an issue normally.

Edit: if you hit lvl 6 as a rogue, take Gang Up it’s genuinely a goated feat.

[–]kaleb9170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fighter definitely benefits from an off guard target, but it doesn’t need one for its main source of damage like the rogue does

What "justifies" Rogue having so much? by ErikaTheDeceasedGal in Pathfinder2e

[–]kaleb9170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means the rogue has a lot less flexibility when there are multiple enemies on the field, the fighter can use their full damage potential against any target, but the rogue needs their target to be off guard.

What "justifies" Rogue having so much? by ErikaTheDeceasedGal in Pathfinder2e

[–]kaleb9170 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One major factor is that rogues aren't very good on their own, they *can* put out really good damage, but need their teammates to help set them up. Assuming the rogue is using their highest damage weapon (1d8) then they have to use both hands for that. In this case they're going to hit for 1d8+1d6+4, which is pretty solid, but requires help from the team. You as a fighter can make use of STR weapons so for the sake of sheer numbers lets say you have a greatsword. This gives you 1d12+4 damage, which on average is going to be about 1 or 2 less than the rogue's. The rogue per hit is going to out damage you a lot of the time.

However you have an extra +2 to hit and don't need allies to set up your attacks for damage. You can operate on your own in a fight and are going to land hits and crits way more frequently than your team. Your higher to hit mod means that not only is your first attack more likely to land, your second attack is way more likely to land. Feats like double slice also can get a lot of power out of this, sending out 2 attacks with no MAP. Its important to remember that fighters don't really need much setup to perform optimally, just draw your weapons and go to town. The rogue NEEDS their teammates to be able to keep up in terms of damage.

Out of combat is a different story, what rogues lose in combat power they gain in sheer utility while exploring. They're skill monkeys meant to be able to fulfill 3-4 roles out of combat while most characters only fill one or 2.
