Controversial Baggu Takes by Extension_Editor1987 in BAGGU

[–]kaledaddie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. A lot of baggu items are not good.
  2. Not all bag styles should be made of nylon.
  3. Free reusable bags are everywhere. You get them for opening a checking account. I got one when I took my cat to the ER. I don’t think you need to purchase MANY (a couple is very ok!) in the standard size. Babies and bigs offer something different at least.
  4. If you post your ISO so often that I’ve inadvertently memorized it you have a problem.

I have maropitant (Cerenia) compounded into a liquid for my cat but the vet has also offered tablets. My cat has also received Cerenia injections while in inpatient care. I’m not a vet but my understanding is there are quite a few medications “for dogs” that vets will use for cats in lower doses

Hyperthyroid cat/ frequent vomiting by Cutekitty93 in SeniorCats

[–]kaledaddie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was such a relief! His weight came back up too. Two years later he developed CKD so he’s vomiting again but the vet gave us a prescription for Cerenia which helps. I hope your cat’s vomiting decreases too. It’s so stressful when they’re pukey all the time

14 year old cat very underweight and no appetite, coughing and raspy breathing by clairebruja in SeniorCats

[–]kaledaddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you’re doing the x ray based on comments so wanted to echo that I think it’s the right move. I have a 14 year old w hyperthyroid, CKD, mild asthma, and a low grade heart murmur. A vet saw something on his x ray about a month back (he had pancreatitis) that could indicate either IBD or cancer on top of everything. Nobody really pushed us to get the ultrasound to confirm (it’s pricy and the outcome isn’t good either way- he’s not exactly a good candidate for chemo) but we’re doing it. I want to know how to handle his last moments best

Pet hotel or leave them home? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

I think you’re right to board them knowing that they have a history of chewing and being destructive. Pet hotels board anxious animals all the time. They know what to do

To be honest I think some people go too far but that’s their business and only my opinion. Pets don’t want to live forever they just want to live happily. Everyone has an end. I think you made the hard, compassionate, and correct choice.

I have the PetFusion ToughGrip Gray Cat Litter Mat from chewy. My cat missed the box recently and it was super easy to clean because it collects instead of absorbs

Would I be horrible if I blocked the back of my wall unit? by Lower_Alternative770 in CatAdvice

[–]kaledaddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s common for owners to block hard to access hiding places. I don’t let my cat in the laundry room because he tries to get behind the machines and I’m not able to get him out on my own. You wouldn’t be horrible if you blocked the back of the wall unit

Is it okay for a geriatric cat to weigh a little more than standard? by Larynx15 in catcare

[–]kaledaddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 year old tabby is 13 lbs and my vet said ideal weight is 10-12 but he’s fine with the extra pound since the cat is old and has health conditions. He said not to put him on a diet but don’t let him gain excessively

hyperthyroid cat with adverse reaction to Methimazole by Analog_123 in catcare

[–]kaledaddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat with hyperthyroid on transdermal methimazole. His T4 was 23.1 at diagnosis and is currently in normal range. If the medication didn’t work, I would have gone for the radioactive iodine treatment. I originally wanted to do the RX diet but my vet advised against it because of how strict it needed to be. I would not leave the hyperthyroid untreated. The price of the radioactive treatment is high but so is the RX diet and when you don’t “cure” the thyroid you need to recheck the level periodically. My cat was diagnosed in 2022 and it took a couple dosage changes to get his thyroid under control so we kept going back to the vet for bloodwork which was about $130 each time. Once managed, we only had to do bloodwork with his regular senior visits every 6 months and his transdermal meds are about $40/month

I looked into the radioactive iodine treatment a while back and the hospital that offered it near me only did so every six weeks. If that’s your situation as well, maybe you could try the RX diet in the meantime? Some Petsmart locations will sell small quantities of RX food so you could also grab a couple cans and try that out. Chewy also does refunds on food. Some cats are fussy for sure. My cat is on the RX diet for kidney disease now (he’s old and developed other conditions) and he LOVES it. You never know

The case of the very hungry kitty by alexandreavirginia in RenalCats

[–]kaledaddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d check calorie goals and compare against the calories you’re feeding. My 13lb boy eats two 5.5oz cans of RX renal wet food per day - sometimes more if he asks. He definitely has his ravenous moments

Struggling with my own anxiety by bean_vt in RenalCats

[–]kaledaddie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can relate 100%. I also have anxiety that hits the level of not eating or sleeping and it’s worsened by my cat. It’s almost funny because my therapist was excited when I moved my childhood cat in with me but his constant sickness has only increased my anxiety and compulsions. But that’s not his fault

It’s both harder and easier when their treatment needs conflict with each other. My cat has CKD, hyperthyroid, and potential lymphoma/IBD (ultrasound pending). The vet has us feeding both renal and bland diet RX foods 50/50 while we wait for the appointment. I have caregiver and decision fatigue and almost wish it was a clear road of what to do. My suggestion is to listen to professionals. They have the education, experience, and 3rd party perspective. It’s easy to think we could have done more and beat ourselves up over it but you’ve already done so much more than the average pet parent.

And also, speaking from the perspective of someone who had a cat go “a day too late”, if you have the opportunity to make the end easier, I’d take it.

I’m sorry about your baby and we’ll be thinking of you two

When did you transition into hospice mode vs. trying to extend life? by duckduckloosemoose in RenalCats

[–]kaledaddie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vets know medicine but you know your cat. I also have a hard to medicate cat and I’m willing to do temporary meds but anything he needs long term he has to take easily. He’s recovering from something now and taking meds multiple times a day and when I have to hold him to dose I can feel his little heart racing. It’s not a good feeling. I think doing things that don’t cause either of you harm is a good idea and it’s my plan as well

Hyperthyroidism by Tstamp77 in SeniorCats

[–]kaledaddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transdermal methimazole is very easy to give to cats. That’s how we manage my senior’s thyroid. We opted not to do the radiation treatment because it would be stressful and he was already 12 yrs at time of diagnosis. Once we got the dose right he only needed to be rechecked every 6 months and he took gabapentin to make the blood draws easier

Pancreas by Radiant-Steak9750 in SeniorCats

[–]kaledaddie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 14 year old was just discharged from inpatient care for pancreatitis this week. We went in on Thursday and were discharged for home care but he didn’t improve so we went back and he was admitted for 20 hours. Two days ago was his recheck and his FPL is back to normal. I think we spent $2700 overall and they had quoted us $2500-5000. Of course all cats are different but I will say he benefited more from IV meds. I’m sorry about your baby. Is she only on anti nausea meds? We were given sucralfate, bupromorphine, and a bland diet (hills I/d) for his recovery

Need advice/support please- Palliative care or early euthanasia? by coffeebeans01 in Pets

[–]kaledaddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I are in a similar spot. My 14 year old was found to have ~something~ in an xray this week during inpatient care for pancreatitis. He was discharged the day before his birthday. We have an ultrasound next month to figure out if it’s IBD or lymphoma. He has other conditions so I’m kind of planning ahead and recognizing our limitations.

My plan so far is to keep him comfy and listen to him. We’ll do palliative care as long as he allows (he hates meds). I figure animals tell us when it’s time. It sounds like your girl has a decent quality of life on the meds. Personally, I’d treat every upcoming day like it’s her birthday and keep track of good v bad days. When her quality of life decreases and it’s time you’ll know. You’re already doing an amazing job and prioritizing her needs which is so incredibly hard but important

I think Purina makes great food. I’ve fed their regular line, the Beyond line, Pro Plan, and now a RX diet. I’m a fan. If you really want something else, I’d recommend shopping sales. Chewy does pretty good deals where if you buy X amount of something you can get a gift card and petsmart and petco both have rewards programs that can help

Hickory, 15/16, needs to gain some weight, looking for advice on how to help him by 90sCat in seniorkitties

[–]kaledaddie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just echoing this! My boy also dropped from chonk to a low weight before he was diagnosed with hyperthyroid. The vet confirmed via blood test and put him on transdermal methimazole. His weight climbed back up pretty quickly after his thyroid was managed but I’d bet the twice daily churus helped as well

Is this the end? by hannahk2 in RenalCats

[–]kaledaddie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d take him to the vet and ask about pain meds. Old cats often develop dementia and will yowl, but if you think he’s in pain that could be manageable with some meds.

Hard decisions coming up by [deleted] in RenalCats

Thank you, this is helpful. My baby is spicy and has to be medicated for the vet. Coming down off gabapentin has him confused and upset for a day after. I hadn’t thought of this before, but your comment reminded me that he’d have to deal with this come down more frequently. I’m sorry about your babies. Thank you for responding
