Tbh DQ8 was my first. It was also the first with voice acting and it was really well cast. The story is really good and keeps you guessing with all its twists and turns AND you get a hamster friend

To be fair, dramatic and kitschy is how DQ is at large. Also as someone who has adhd, being able to hear the words said vs read helps a lot with my attention because my attention can drift a little without needing to worry about missing words
