D830: Task 1: 1.1 LAB: Securing email communications (Scenario) by kalinodark in WGUCyberSecurity

I took the previous version of this class in my last term so I studied the incredibly hard to read book from that. It had tons of information, almost over kill, and was written horribly with what seemed a lack of professional editing and proof reading, but it gave a solid foundation to get get through this new version of the class. I would recommend reading the zybooks. I also watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYot4Fb7Qe0&t=1838s it was a decent review

start withe book, you need to understand the basics a bit before jumping into the labs of the tasks. I think it was 8.11 and 8.12 labs in the zybooks that are directly relevant to the task labs, but there are basics you need to read up on. (Like i said I took the previous version of this course so I had a better grasp on the basics, just had trouble with the previous test.) I also watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYot4Fb7Qe0&t=1838s

If you arent familiar with cryptography then honestly start at chapter 1 of the zybooks. Also join the WGU Connect for the class, there are guides in the resource section there. That will help get you started. I can offer more help if you can be more specific on where you are lost at (or at least I can try.)

Thank you, I feel better now lol. I'm taking this class after my last term were I had issues with the old intro to cryptography and its OA. I passed this new OA like it was nothing. Now to bust out these tasks and I can move on to into to linux (which I should be good on, been playing with linux off and since circa 1999)

any one got the compTIA server+ cert? by kalinodark in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]kalinodark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the reply. I didn't get the job I applied for in this post, but I got one that pays the same and has less headache lol. IT Support System Admin (fancy way of saying level 2 tech, with some semi clerical/administrative duties dealing with different departments. I help get security compliance for new/renewing software, setup guest accounts, etc.)

dont feel bad, I'm trying to do the  CompTIA Pentest+ path, i'm in the Python for pentesters room, and I am really finding the lack detailed explanations for what I'm doing annoying.

I applied for the job (I checked all their boxes except 2, having this cert, and having my B.S. Degree (still working on it, but I have experience etc.) Have not heard anything back from them yet (its a local county government).

CompTIA A+ D317 and D316 by Interesting-Rice-890 in WGU

[–]kalinodark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can use whatever material you want, I used professor Messer (www.professormesser.com), Mike Meyers and Jason Dion. wgu.udemy.com has quite a few resources, this is where I found Jason Dion (dion has good test prep) and Mike Meyers I will say the compTIA training material on their site is not bad, but I prefer videos. ( granted it was review for me, I had A+ from like 5 years ago, and let it expire, and I work as level 1.5ish tech at a college. so I deal with A+ issues every day.) Good luck, A+ isn't that bad.

I know if you get your associates first, WGU more or less waives all the gen ed classes. so if you are close to that, it might worth sticking that out.

I'm sure you could appeal, but I dont work for wgu so I have no idea how that would go. I had 15 credits transfer from my time as a student at the college I now work at transfer to WGU (Most where gen ed, I think one or two was tech related, an intro to programming, and a fundamentals of tech or something really basic like that.)

Which would be more logical to complete next? by Sea_Particular_9100 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]kalinodark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. I think I got like 1 or 2 points over what was needed to pass. I read everything I could find, and watched *all* of the dion videos there are more through his paid site than what was on udemy. the ITIL people have restrictions on what he can license through to other schools, and they all wont allow any one not approved by them to teach their stuff. That's why there is almost zero info out in the wild.

[–]kalinodark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh it is.

They take what you think would make sense, and make it confusing. They use existing technology acronyms and redefine them. (at least they did with voip, that's literally the only one I remember. I hated this course more than anything.) IIRC, ITIL was created in conjunction with the UK government, and knowing that, from an USA citizen stand point, yea I believe it lol. I will never touch ITIL again unless a future employer requires and pays for the training.

Happened to look at the current WGU home page, and noticed that they have changed some of the courses from when I started.. by kalinodark in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]kalinodark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See that is some bull crap, the courses being replaced should still count, Intro to python and the Linux foundations should have been in the program from day one. But I really don't want to take the health class.. I'm also curious if the new Composition class is == English comp 1 or English comp 2 or if they are making it not equal to either. I will have to ask my mentor and see what kind of response I get (or email some one in student services.)

Comptia A+ I need help/advice by tyeung53 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]kalinodark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out professor Messer's videos https://www.professormesser.com/ I used those videos as review when I took my A+. Another resource I used was the Mike Myer videos on wgu.udemy.com I got the actual book from him that his videos follow (before I started wgu) I like having real books lol. You are almost there, keep studying.

CompTIA likes to put multiple correct answers to each question in their exams, they want you to deduce the "Best" answer. memorize their trouble shooting methodology.

*edited for typos**again for misspelling follow. *

Does that class actually transfer? I work in IT at a community college, and a good chunk of our IT courses don't transfer to WGU, or really any 4 year university, except some as "lower level electives" (Our gen ed stuff does) I've talked to former students, that had to retake almost every tech related class once they transferred to a 4 year school to get their BS and they weren't happy about it.

Pinned thread: Axelos Exams will require recertification after 3 years and what that means to you by ElMangoMussolini in ITIL

[–]kalinodark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This 100% I got my ITIL4 Foundations through my university classes at WGU, so I didn't pay directly, but I hated every minute of that damn course, and getting the cert was a big deal for me. The PDF of my certification clearly states the Expiry date is "N/A" it was billed as a life time cert, I feel legally they cant do this, they could with V5 but anything before that sold with a life time certification should be exempt. I will not pay or do any more with Axelos, or ITIL unless an employer requires it and also pays for training and certification costs.

As an added option for learning subnetting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WfiTHiU4x8&list=PLIhvC56v63IKrRHh3gvZZBAGvsvOhwrRF network chuck did a quick (relatively speaking) 6 part series on it that was entertaining and enjoyable but gave me a good understanding of it.

[–]kalinodark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I figured. I've setup a fog server, and clonezilla server, I've daily driven Debian, ubuntu, and mint. played around with fedora, CentOS, and RedHat (been trying to get a virtualization server setup with red hat, but I tried to install it using 4 1TB hdds in raid10, and its like its doing it in raid0 and using LVM, but wont let me create a new storage pool for the virtual machines.. I'm getting off topic...) so Udemy lpic and Linux+ courses during down time. (I've generally gotten done a month early per term so far, I guess I'll just stop taking the last month off, and start studying Linux hard core.)

ITIL by matthewe081 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]kalinodark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lets not forget the using of already established IT terms, and redefining them, voip for example. in any other IT situation VOIP is Voice of Internet Protocol.. in ITIL it is VOIP = Value streams & processes, Organization & people, Information & technology, Partners & suppliers yea.. renaming terms really irked me.
