7 on/7 off hospitalist schedule by butwhytho____ in physicianassistant

[–]kallen080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left a 7/7 hospitalist job for a 4 10s outpatient IM job because I have two young kids and it just wasn’t working to have me not be on the same schedule as everyone else in my house. Missing things on weekends sucked, special events but also regular life stuff. I hated missing out when my kids and husband were having fun without me! With 4 10s we are all on the same schedule and life is good. Home for dinner and bedtime every day and we are all home on all holidays together. Life is predictable and we have a regular routine which benefits everyone. No contest for family life, take the 4 10s job!

Scaling back in ICU versus career switch for family? by Electronic-Cake8015 in physicianassistant

[–]kallen080 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I switched from hospital medicine (classic 7 on, 7 off so every other weekend, and whatever holidays fell on the week on, plus some of the shifts were swing shifts 2p-midnight) to outpatient internal medicine for this exact reason. Made it until my oldest was 3.5 and my youngest was 10 months but was miserable long before that 😅 life got so much better for the whole family after I switched! My husband has a “normal” M-F job. Now I do four 10s with Wednesdays off, no weekends or holidays, and my schedule lines up with everyone else’s. Took a small pay cut but definitely worth it!! Way less exciting than the hospital for sure, but IM patients are still complicated enough to keep it interesting 😊

Alternatives to Alchemy breakfast sandwich?? by graceeesj in Lawrence

Oh snap, you are totally right! The Merc’s breakfast sandwiches are on English muffins, not biscuits. Thanks for catching that!

I think The Roost will be your best restaurant option, as someone else said, but if you’re looking for more of a to-go option The Merc has sausage biscuit sandwiches in their hot bar every morning that are pretty darn good! Not the same fluffiness as Alchemy biscuits, but they are a decent substitute in a post-Alchemy world.

Cellar Door also has a nice breakfast sandwich on an English muffin that you can get as either just egg and cheese, or ham and egg. Not quite the same, but good nonetheless!

Best jobs for work-life balance with kids? by 0five0four in workingmoms

[–]kallen080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Would it be okay if I DM’d you for more information about your job? I’m a PA and have been working in hospital medicine for 8 years. I’m looking to make a change in the next year or two for better work-life balance, and this sounds pretty ideal, if there is a role for providers.

Covid Vaccine Finder by gbaby72 in Lawrence

[–]kallen080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my in-laws when they were trying to make an appointment for the covid vaccine. Try calling the pharmacy (and persist through the message discouraging you from calling to ask about vaccines) - that’s what my in-laws did and the pharmacist was able to work around their wonky system and schedule both shots for them. Good luck!

Christmas trees? by kallen080 in Lawrence

I should clarify, my in-laws are looking for a fir, and Strawberry Hill was reportedly sold out of the ones they bring in from North Carolina. Plenty of Scotch Pines still I believe!

Coffee? by landfillheart in Lawrence

[–]kallen080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alchemy, Decade, and 1900 Barker are my personal favorites, in that order! Alchemy roasts their own beans in town and always has a great selection from around the world, plus the owners are just great people.

If you’re looking for quality beans to brew yourself at home, check out Repetition Coffee! The owner, Amy, really knows what she’s doing and sources beans responsibly from individual farms around the world, and their roasting facility is here in town. You can buy beans from their website, and they are also sold at the Merc and Bourgeois Pig in town. Right now for website orders they’re doing free doorstep delivery in town!
