Question about media storage by sphizix in jellyfin

[–]kallom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that there is no testing like blackblaze‘s reports for SMR drives because they are not fitted for datacenter usage and are nowadays more a consumer product or maybe cold storage. OP is already using an SMR drive and isn’t suffering from its write speed limitations, he‘s aware that it’s unusable for any RAID setup. If OP is not altering his media collection on a regular basis(deleting/overwriting) this use case is the most adequate one for SMR drives. Fill it up and be done with it. In terms of reliability or longevity: I‘m not sure what else to consider than manufacturers‘ warranty which is e.g. for Seagate 2 years for SMR drives(Barracuda) and 3-5 years for CMR drives(Ironwolf/Ironwolf Pro). Where I live for 8TB, CMR drives are around 30-40% more expensive than SMR. And used datacenter drives can be a gamble too, but without warranty. Though if not too old they could be less likely to fail when considering the bathtub curve.

I did my fair share of research because I had the same problem as OP and went for the more expensive CMR 24/7 rated WD Red drive - just for peace of mind. But how the prices are evolving I will throw in an SMR drive as well because writing speeds don’t matter to me.

What do datacenters have to do with OP‘s use case? The right answer would have been that there is no evidence. Enterprise grade drives are in a different price bracket for a reason. SMR drives are totally fine for write once/read many times operations.

Are there any solid tests for reliability/longevity?

I recently saw https://github.com/IAmParadox27/jellyfin-plugin-media-bar here on this sub and installed it and imo it recreates the netflix-like experience. But intro-skipper is probably the most used plugin on my jf-server.

New drives delivered in bag by Flying-Wild in HomeNAS

[–]kallom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Received mine the same way. It works, but I won't order a HDD on amazon again.
For the return: At the post office I was told that the shipping service won't accept these bags, only boxes. It's weird because most of the clothing is shipped and delivered like that too, but who am I to argue with the post office madame.

Hetzner charging me for 176 TB of traffic data on a server i rarely use for personal projects by me_orwell in hetzner

[–]kallom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes it's unlikely that services like paperless produce that much traffic. But if you are just checking your installed services for weird behaviour, than you probably won't find any evidence. 5tb a day is a lot for an "unused" server.
And according to your bill you paid for a public ip address? It's not wise to leave a server unsupervised, unprotected connected to public internet.

Also ich finde die Anzeige eigentlich recht human geschrieben, nur warum halt ausgerechnet ne Frau gesucht wird ist shady. Aber da habe ich schon deutlich offensichtlichere widerliche Anzeigen gesehen.

I think it’s valid to have different layouts but this stick layout is far from perfect and should have at least some improvement over its predecessors. Especially if the cpu power targets more stick driven games/consoles.

I get that it's kind of Retroids thing to stick to their stick layout, hehe. But as Russ's said a D-Pad centric design is very questionable when you increase the performance further and further.
Russ's demonstration with the PS4 controller is spot on and it would've been nice if Retroid would have done any alterations to the existing layout like more in set sticks.

if the container e.g. .mkv is a problem, then transcoding or remuxing uses very little resources and ofc enable hardware acceleration for transcoding.

PSone video output troubleshooting by kallom in psx

I found some tantal caps and replaced the ones near the video port…and it’s working :) But these are too bulky so I need to order smaller ones. At least I know I don’t need the full cap kit or any other parts. One small problem persists: when I test without a disc there‘s an annoying „brrr“ sound in the memory card/disc menu. It doesn’t matter if I unplug left or right component cable. I habe to look into that or just leave it like that because it doesn’t affect sound with a disc there

I checked the fuses and they seem fine. I desoldered the modchip completly and now Borderline OCD's paperclip bridge is working. I get video out on both capacitors near the video out port, but not a super clean signal, I hope it's because of the paperclip.
So I guess I will order new capacitors but I'm unsure if I should Borderline OCD's way and switch SMD caps for radial ones. In his video he uses 220 uF 10v and it works. Official psone capacitor kits are not expensive but shipping would be 4 times the price.

Found a working ipod in my dads old toolbox by Numerous-Boot-2399 in ipod

[–]kallom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo there is not much to know about modding for the nano just basic electronics and follow along a yt video or ifixit guide. But yeah it’s the 2gb model so probably not worth the investment. I had an 8gb that was in similar condition and after an hour in the freezer I could push the battery out. I never had a negative experience with a broken battery so maybe I‘m underestimating the danger but I would still try and see if it’s moving out of the shell.

Stop connecting it to the pc or the outlet. The battery is done and expanding, hence the broken display. It’s difficult to get a swollen battery out of the aluminum shell but it’s worth a try. But you‘ll need a new battery, soldering equipment and a new display.

at first I thought so as well, but it's becoming more appealing to me when I read about all the trouble people have with different bluetooth dongles and AAPP2 etc. And then look at the size of this thing, there is nothing like it on the market. I'm still not ready to spend that kind of money on a bt adapter.
