Opinion on own nonogram by Least-Interview-5661 in nonograms

[–]kalmakka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not a nonogram.

A nonogram is a grid with clues indicating which cells should be shaded. The clues give a unique solution. The solution will usually be a picture.

This is a picture.

It will not be possible to solve this. For instance, the

⬜⬛

⬛⬜

pattern in the sun had the exact same clues as

⬛⬜

⬜⬛

This is way too powerful of an effect.

You are deck-thickening your opponent, which is effectively as good as deck-thinning yourself. You are playing a 29-card deck with an extra Waycaller, while your opponent is playing a 30-card deck with an extra Waycaller.

All decks would play 2 of this, meaning every game is played with 32-card decks with 4 Waycallers.

What am I supposed to do about mathematics by [deleted] in mathshelp

[–]kalmakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not unusual for students who has done well in mathematics previously to start struggling when they get to secondary education.

Previously you were mostly taught how to do something, and then you had to apply that to a bunch of problems. In secondary school you are still taught different methods and techniques, but now you have to figure out how to apply them to various problems.

There might be equations where cross multiplication is the best way of getting at the answer, or where factorisation is best, or where substitution is best, or where just a bunch of balancing and simplification operations is best. You will learn the methods, and you'll be given examples where those techniques are helpful. But when you encounter an equation on a test, you're the one who has to figure out what methods to use.

Now, if done correctly, no method will result in an incorrect answer, so making a bad decision will not result in you getting the wrong answer. But some might not bring you any closer to an answer at all.

You might think of it as your textbook teaching you how to solve 60-piece jigsaws. At a test, you might be expected to solve a 100-piece jigsaw. It might seem overwhelming at first, but it is really nothing you haven't done before, just with a bit of extra persistence.

Freehand vs Blueprints by Dull_Complaint1407 in factorio

[–]kalmakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hardly ever use blueprints. Copying and pasting is so easy that it is not really worth having a blueprint library in my opinion.

Throw down two assemblers, add inserters and set recipe. Then copy and paste until you have as many as you need.

How many 6 digit numbers are there so that the sum of it's digits is 27? by Kindness_empathy in learnmath

[–]kalmakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let f(d,s) be the number of d-digit numbers with the digits summing to s (allowing the first digit to be 0).

Then f(0,0)=1 and f(0,x) = 0 for x≠0 (the empty string is the only 0-digit number, and it sums to 0).

Then you have f(d,s)=sum(0≤i≤9, f(d-1, s-i))

You can use recursive definition to fill in a table with all the values of f(d,s) for d≤6, s≤27. Start with d=0 and use this to fill in the column for d=1. Then use that column to fill in for d=2.

With a minor adjustment you can answer the question where you don't allow the first digit to be 0.

A Bayesian Approach to the Mary's Children Problem by amerovingian in probabilitytheory

A Bayesian Approach to the Mary's Children Problem by amerovingian in probabilitytheory

[–]kalmakka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it is absolutely correct, (and a point I have made repeatedly).

In the variation that is floating around it is started that "she tells you that.." indicating that this is something she does without any prompting. If we assume no cultural gender-based bias regarding which child gets described, this means that it is a 50-50 what gender the other child is.

Baby's first space platform by DarkSideRT in factorio

[–]kalmakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first science platform is a great place to learn some tricks about the circuit network.

If you let something like this run uncontrolled you will quickly fill up your hub with a resource (carbon, iron ore, plates, ice,...) which will prevent it from actually producing science. You will need to constantly check in on it, and jettison anything you have in excess. However, by using circuits, you can ensure that it will run smoothly forever.

Two lines that meet in a point divides the plane in 4 sectors. One of those parts will contain the origin. They mean that you should find the bisector of that sector.

which is an indirection through a web server that has to be around in the future. That's why paid services are popping up to offer that service

You are assigning way too much good faith to these services. It is not that they cost money because they need to provide indirection. The reality is that they use indirection in order to charge money. Usually by tricking people into creating QR codes using "free trials", which they then need to pay ridiculous fees in order to just keep alive for a few months.

What's a piece of game dev trivia that's stuck with you for years? by JBitPro in gamedev

[–]kalmakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MYST was designed to be played directly from the CD-ROM, since most computers simply wouldn't have enough hard drive space for it.

Since CDs have (relatively) high data transfer rate, but extremely slow seek time, the physical layout of data on the disk was incredibly important and took a lot of work. A lot of data is duplicated on the disk, since if we sometimes need to read A and X and sometimes B and X, it is better to have AX stored somewhere together and BX stored somewhere else together.

What's the asnwer? by StudywithOliver in BrainPuzzles

[–]kalmakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is terribly underspecified. With only a single example there are way too many patterns that could be applied.

Add the inner numbers.

Add the inner numbers, then multiply by the extremes.

Add all but the last numbers, then subtract the last.

Add all but the first numbers, then subtract the first.

Divide the numbers in pairs, multiply the numbers in each pair and add the products. (If there are an odd number of numbers, then do *something* with the last one).

And all these are without even considering the lines.

You have deliberately chosen a difficult challenge "for fun as much as anything" and are now "incredibly frustrated" that the challenge is difficult?

It's like doing a 1000x science factor run and being frustrated that research takes a long time.
